This was definitely helpful to give an idea of how to go about it. I’m a professional tech and i still found that bottom bolt quite frustrating. On the reinstall I found it helpful to go ahead and put the bolt in the lower hole and get the socket extension on and work the whole thing into the engine bay together.

Yea I forgot about the other tip I had for this vid at the time. Same what you saying. I use one of the 8mm bolts from the bracket, put a lil silicone on the treads then insert the bolt in the hole so it would stay and then insert the thermostat down in its place..good stuff man

Excellent video, straight to the point and not fifty minutes long. I found all of the information very helpful and it's talked me out of doing it myself in the driveway. Some things you do yourself others you write a painfully large check for. This is one that I'm going to write a check ✔️ to fix.

Just noticed this was a 4 year old video. But maaaaan I'm this pulled up when I had to search how to replace thermostat on a 2016 Fiat 2.4. That bottom bolt was wooping my but. Had to go to the parts store and buy a swivel 10mm and use your tape trick. Been working on that bolt for hour. Five minutes using your method and it was off. Owe you $ for that. Not sure if you will even see this comment since it's an old video. But definitely appreciate it.

I don't have a car with this engine, but this was well-done & very informative. I like the idea of taping the swivel socket on, so I will keep that in mind. On my 2003 Saturn L (2.2 Ecotec), when I replaced the crank sensor, it required removal of the starter. When I replaced the starter, I had to tape 1 of the bolts to the socket & extension. I have heard of stuffing a piece of paper or a leaf into the socket to hold the bolt, but that was not going to work, so it had to be tape. You just have to be careful and try to position the tape so that it will all pull back once the bolt is seated in the threads.

Nice Job. Like it, no frills. Only thing is to have a clock on the camera so that some lay person can figure out roughly how much time it should take me to do the job. If it's gonna take me five hours not including clean up to install a 13 dollar part (I only bought the thermostat - not the housing). I might just get the experts to do it. But the way you did it looks easy enough... I'll give it a try. Thanks !

Thanks for the video!!! This the main one I used to change mine on a 2017 Jeep Renegade. I watched another video where the guy removed the battery instead of the pump. This was easier, battery looked more of a hassle. The difference on mine was the hard bolt. Swivel didn't work for me. I had to use a straight extension, about 8 inches I'm guessing. Also the crazy thing on mine was the upper left an lower right were the 10mm bolts and the other 2 were the the 8mm bolts. If you read this, can you answer this - what kind pump is it that is removed - what does it pump? Thanks!

6 hours later the job is done. Removing the bottom bolt and getting the hose clip back on are brutal! Luckily, I was able to squeeze my fingers under the thermostat to guide the socket onto the bolt for removal and line it back up for reassembly. How did you get bottom right bolt out of the thermostat? I can do it but the hose directly below the thermostat is covering the bolt and the hose won’t even budge to move it to gain access to the last bolt (bottom right bolt) the bolt you took off after taping the socket to the wrench..you said it was the hardest part but it’s actually impossible 😆

Just a chemist security advice. The coolant contains ethylene glycol and degrated compounds. You should use gloves because ethylene glycol is really hygroscopic (sucks water off things) and can be harsh on your skin. Nice video otherwise :)

I'm gonna write out each part you take out or off, write the name of each bolt or nut etc on Ziploc bags. Then I'll write the number of that step from your instructions on the Ziploc bag too. I was really afraid that I'd forget a step or lose a nut or bolt or something. There's like 20 things you disconnect but I got a game plan now. I can do this. I also ordered all 3 parts: housing and 2 thermostats including gasket, new on eBay for less than $50. Just fyi

Here's a few extra tips: use a mirror for the 10mm socket on the bottom if you have a small enough one so you can see where the bolt is at! Also, if you lose the small metal clip like I did, you can use a hose clamp instead of replacing that clip, it works just the same.
@Exploringthe208

I was able to find the replacement clip for the back hose if anyone loses it. Message me and I'll figure out a way to send you a picture since some people had a hard time replacing it/finding it

Yeah the mirror was awesome to see if you're on the bolt - like doing laparoscopic surgery. (probably)

yes its a pain..I started going back in with one of them 8mm bolts from the bracket and i would coat the inside of the socket with rtv so the bolt would sort of stick to it and then try fishing it in there

The price to have it done professionally is £400. If you have more money than you know what to do with it or more money than sense, pay the amount. The thermostat housing, itself, only costs £34. It only took wm 2 hours 40 minutes and I am nothing but a glorified chimpanzee, mentally.

@@OnlineMechanicTips I just got to thinking after watching this again, do you think I should replace the housing also? My daughter went and bought just the thermostat which was about $23 . I seen another video a while back and the guy replaced the whole housing as well. Back in the old days used to usually just replace the thermostat. Unless housing was cracked or something
@OnlineMechanicTips
@OnlineMechanicTips 5 жыл бұрын
Yea the good ones are design built around inside the housing,,That will be your best bet..Trust me, you only want to do a job like this once..So you might as well go in with a good part that will offer you some type of warranty..Every one ive done come from the dealer which include the thermostat inside the housing such as in the picture..

@@OnlineMechanicTips thank you! The part that confuses me is that there's an external thermostat inside the thermostat housing and there's a 2nd thermostat which looks like it's inside the engine there but I didn't see you remove or change that. Do I replace both thermostats? I'm confused and can't find clear instructions, diagrams or videos.
