Great video! I really appreciated what you had to say about Phoenix and Apollo’s relationship in this game. They are deliciously complicated and it’s really interesting to think about how Phoenix very much contributed to Apollo’s trust issues. I love Beanix but it’s wild that we don’t see him face any consequences for how he behaves in AA4 and how he takes over what should have been Apollo’s story. I still have complicated feelings about Dual Destinies, but I like it better after giving it some time to stew. My only huge complaint with it now is that it didn’t do Trucy and Athena justice. Phoenix’s writing isn’t as bad as some people say, but it was a punch in the gut for me only getting 1.5 cases with Athena as protagonist and then having Phoenix step in for the rest. But I’m glad that DD connected with so many people, since there’s a lot to love about it. And how could I be _that_ mad at the game that gave us Athena Cykes??

I completely agree with everything here. But I just started wondering. If i remember correctly they wanted in DD to build up a romance between Juniper and Apollo and from what I remember, she wasn't really present in SoJ, which is a shame. While she isnt the most interesting character, I hoped she would show up. Maybe even as a judge. I believe they could have easily written her in SoJ: Judge in Khurain at the end of episode 5: Ugh. I am too old to deal with things like this. I am quitting. 2 weeks later Junniper: Hey Apollo, quess who got to be the new judge in here... Me! Apollo: Congrats. And they lived happily ever after. Or did they? The end? (You never know who dies in Ace Attorney) I am not a writter neither am I familiar with how it works when Judge wants to quit, so just act like this is a masterpiece from Shakespeare. I dunno. But i believe that could actually be a nice conclusion to Apollo's story.

I kind of agree on the Apollo vs Phoenix argument, but it's hinted too subtly with a throwaway line. Aside from that, I have a few "objections" to the video About the point of the dark age of the law: I would be more willing to give credit to Dual Destinies in one instance where it mattered: in the final case, The Phantom fed into the crowd's doubts, but the judge immediately discouraged that attitude; and then, at the end of the case, the issue seems to resolve itself at the end. That, and the fact that The Dark Age of The Law turned out to be a massive failure on the "show don't tell" adage, make it seem less dark than the first game About the Black Psyche Locks: I don't necessarily think that Athena should have suffered major psychological trauma from her Black Psyche Locks being broken, but even with the explanation added it makes little sense. Breaking them meant the final loss of sanity for Kristoph, while for Athena it's just a memory unlock, which makes them kind of inconsequential. Phoenix is rightfully afraid of breaking them, after seeing what they did to his enemy, and I get that he had to break them in order to reach the truth, but that truth is gained for free at the end of the day. Look no further than the fourth case of TGAA2R Phoenix: The problem with his supposed "return to form" that he's as capable as he was in the first game, or the second case of the third game if we're being charitable. And it's not even about Hobo Phoenix being uber smart and DD Phoenix being a donkey, he had 7 years to plot his revenge, let's be real here. If anything, I agree with the "mentor" point, but they should've gone further in that direction; he overshadowed both Apollo and the newcomer Athena in the sense that, in the end, be it due to the circumstances or the writers having a bias towards new characters, he's the one to ultimately solve the issues of the game Apollo: The look of "anger" in my opinion is just his surprise sprite being weird, which if you think about it is a theme in Dual Destinies, due to it being rushed. I mean, look at Trucy. You might argue that they made his sprite that way for a reason, but why would he be angry at his mentor for getting his badge back? Because he would have more of a backseat? It could be an explanation, but I'll also add that Phoenix hinted at his return in case 2, which happens before the DLC case, and there, Apollo's compliments seem genuine. Also, the part about Clay was a huge wasted opportunity on which Spirit of Justice capitalized massively: the game really should have had us meet Clay A few more unrelated points: - The strong point of Apollo Justice is its characters, like the new and improved Ema, Klavier and Trucy, so Dual Destinies has the bright idea to sideline them or discard them outright; and in Ema's place we get Fulbright, who is divisive, to say the least, regardless of what happens in the final case. Blackquill's top 3 material though, way better than the prick we get the following game - I dislike the fact that you can't examine areas unrelated to the investigation and that's a massive letdown, but again, the game was most definitely rushed

Ok I’m gonna skip the dark age one cuz that’s more subjective Black psyche locks can be taken off if someone does it themselves by having their issue resolved, or they can be forcefully removed causing intense damage. The first happened to Athena and the second happened to kristoph, there’s no issue there Phoenix is at his most skilled in dd and SOJ. I can understand maybe not liking his sweating and feeling pressured, but to be entirely honest, that’s just how court is. Phoenix also displays a lot of skill and insane feats of logic throughout 5 and 6. Again, get if you don’t like the portrayal, but let’s not act like his skill is regressed. To directly compare to trilogy Phoenix, he’s noticeably more confident and consistently winning,, modern Phoenix even is the only attorney to win a case without help, and he won rite with very minimal help. Apollos look of anger can absolutely be important because this game is filled with subtle things like that, another example is Apollo having a kristoph sprite that he uses while saying evidence is everything, ir jinxie’s words about Bobby, or catching the phantom rehearsing Bobby lines, so yes, I fully think it was intentional, since Apollo HAS a normal shock animation, but it wasn’t used just for this scene. And the one that was used does indeed look moderately pissed, and yeah he knew it was coming but he still hadn’t seen it happen until that day. I agree with you about the characters of AJ being sidelined (even if it only really matters super hard anymore for klavier since Trucy and ema got to shine in SOJ which was both of their best games)

@@Athenalikespizza Fair enough about the black psyche locks, Phoenix was explaining everything that happened, and that helped Athena remember As for Phoenix, here's why I think he's more incapable in DD, aside from being rusty (which holds up so-so since he was apparently helping Edgeworth in Europe when taking a break from his Kristoph payback plan): In DD (and SoJ) we usually see Phoenix thinking way more often than in the Trilogy, usually to make 1000% percent sure that the player is following the game's logic; the problem is, the game takes every chance it gets to make the joke that Phoenix can't think far ahead and is always winging it and bluffing, which, again, wasn't as evident in the Trilogy. In older games, he mostly gave the idea that he kind of knew what he was doing to the player as well, is all I'm saying. As for victories: Phoenix has always been consistent in winning, aside from that one instance where he got Engarde convicted (and that was on purpose), or the forged evidence scandal, and he did receive a lot of help from Maya and Mia; aside from the one-off instance, like in 5-5 when Athena confesses, 6-1 and when you face him in 6-5, he's always been accompanied by an assistant. And let me remind you, Phoenix had LOST in The Rite of Turnabout, only to be saved by the deus-ex-machina of the second murder About the characters... Like you said, Spirit of Justice made those characters matter again (except for Klavier), so arguably, SoJ works more as a sequel to AJ than DD

@@Pol74698 Phoenix did lose one rite trial day, but he still ended up winning by the end. Considering that’s legitimately possibly the most hopeless case of the franchise, that’s still a big feat And yes, Phoenix had a consistent win streak, but the amount of help he needed in the og trilogy is just a lot more. I genuinely couldn’t care about the whole known for bluffing thing, that’s how the legend of Phoenix Wrights early days was remembered so it does make sense to me. And tbh, he did still go out on a lot of whims and take logical chances in the trilogy, they’re just called bluffs in dd and SOJ more. Also, his bluffs are correct almost every time, so it’s not like that does damage to him regardless

@@Pol74698 expanding on that last part, I think SOJ is a better sequel to Apollos characters, while dd is a better sequel to its plot, if that makes sense And all 3 have the connector of Phoenix and Apollos relationship being a big focus

@@Athenalikespizza I'd like to say more about the "most hopeless case" part: what makes the it hopeless, and therefore causes Phoenix to lose, is that everyone is missing one half of the puzzle, that being the cavern murder. And the testimony of Tahrust using Maya's body. I get why they didn't want to do that the first trial, despite already being threatened that they would likely be executed, but at that point go for broke and risk it all on the victim's testimony. The fakeout is kinda cool at least (Also, personally, I feel other cases manage that better, like 3-4, G1-3 or even 5-5 when trying to refute Athena's confession)

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Apollo is a secondary character in the game as a whole, but I will say that it was a massive disappointment for me that on the last day of the last case (the most important bit) he really is just Phoenix's stand-in. I was especially bothered by this because the whole game felt like it was leading up to Apollo having a big moment. In every case he gets upstaged by someone else in the courtroom to the point that it was clearly intentional, but that moment where he would truly get to prove his skill and value just didn't come.

As someone whose first experience with Ace Attorney was Apollo Justice, Hobo Phoenix is still my favorite interpretation of the character. He's not a bad person, but he's shady, closed off, and totally willing to bend the rules to get the result he wants. There's not really a ton of that here anymore. There are flashes of it here and there, but honestly, he rings more true to his trilogy self than anything else. Which I think is a regression, not an upgrade. I think Dual Destinies was honestly more an attempt to move away from Apollo Justice than one to follow it up, and it really only works as a sequel because they cover similar thematic ground. But I will agree that black psyche locks being expanded on was a good thing, and Apollo has a better arc here than in his own game (which is not a high bar to clear, but, I mean, credit where it's due).

Dual destinies to me felt like an attempt to continue AJ while also fixing the common hate for it which mainly was Phoenix If it was truly just trying to shy away from it they would jump cut to him having his badge and there wouldn’t be a dark age, apollo wouldn’t be so focused on

@@Athenalikespizza idk. It minimized or ignored almost everything unique about Apollo that it possibly could short of just retconning the game. About the only real thing from Apollo it follows up on is the Dark Age of the law. Trucy and Klavier are sidelined. Phoenix regressed. No other original characters from AJ even appear, idk if they're even so much as mentioned. No specific plot points are followed up on. No Mason system, no discussion of Apollo and Trucys backstory, nothing with the Gramaryes. Apollo was part of the Ace Attorney canon, so they couldn't just ignore him. And I agree that there was an attempt to continue from where it left off, at least where it comes to Apollo's relationship with Phoenix and the state of the legal system overall, but Dual Destinies feels more like a new beginning than a follow-up IMO.

@@wolfgalaxy9086 I think it actually makes a lot of sense that since Phoenix was so burned by being too trusting, he would become more closed off as a result. And without his badge, he lost a major motivator to play by the rules in a system so stacked against him. I think Hobo Phoenix makes a lot of sense, even if it's a big departure from Trilogy Phoenix. Flashback Phoenix, yeah, is a little arrogant. It's not a huge deal IMO since it's such a small part of the game, but sure, I can see that annoying people.

@@wolfgalaxy9086 Honestly, the Mason system is just such a weird moment in general. As I understood it, the whole thing was basically a simulation, and so any differences in personality could essentially be chalked up to the program. I don't think Trump Phoenix and Corner Phoenix came across as all that different. They're both cryptic and secretive. He's more helpful in Trump but solely out of self-interest and even makes Apollo an unwilling accessory to evidence forgery. Hobo Phoenix is still the most interesting and layered version of Phoenix we've ever had, IMO. I don't think it's a case of bad writing in the slightest, even if he feels very different from his old self, and even from the version of him presented to us in the Mason system.

Good endning btw I agree with most of your point So DD being a good sequel Yes i agree with no doubt As you said they should adress mason system and etc from AJ Phoenix also for me felt like og but better and more competent Honestly im glad hobo one does not exist cause I hated him with burning passion Apollo being explore and his relationship with Phoenix Like you said(long review on the game prepare yourself) Ok now the negatives for DD as whole(as a game) Most cases suck imo Turnabout countdown is boring,Athena is pushed as a assistant Tonate is not a great culprit and in some areas case kinda drags. Also it does not help that this case technically is after academy when Athena is more confident etc so yea 4.5/10 Monstrous turnabout -the worst case The case drags a lot, pacing is all over the place and it is tedious. Also if you really think about. This case is a rip off of turnabout sisters. L'belle is basically a worse Redd white, there is blackmail, witness is in cahoot with culprit and etc. 2/10 Reclaimed(dlc)-the best case without doubt. I liked everything here except the pacing and suspension of disbelief. The section with cross-examining orca was pointless since it was not really relevant I think Yamazaki misunderstood on why Polly fuction. She was funny and useful.Orca is just for laughs, which is fine to some degree Marlon was the best culprit and the twist was better than phantom(since there are hints). 7/10 Turnabout Academy-the second worst. Before I talk about this case I will talk about one of the worst plots in AA- dark age of the law First of all you could remove this plot and nothing would change-that how bad it is. Second of all-this "plot" was already happening in the first game(manfred, gant) and in later games(even AJ) And thirdly-the game just remind us about this so many times(ESPECIALLY IN ACADEMY!!!)like this stupid song from serenade. Ok now about academy I dont like that they kinda copy the structure from serenade(the body is moved murder weapon in the lyrics/script)-not really original here but it is fine I dont like the cliche friendship dilemna-it was predictable, boring and NOT FUN Also every single character is ONE DIMENSIONAL The case drag on and on Klavier being back was insulting He has no role in this case You could remove him and it would be the same He his bigger on the cover of DD(bigger than edgeworth) implying he has a bigger role but nope he is just useless Yes he analyzed the tape but ANYONE could have done that Also the VA ruined klavier completely(VA is not bad its just does not fit) He is pathetic excuse of a fan service Now the biggest disaster of this case is the culprit-Aristotle Means Not only is he obvious, but also horribly written. And the " the end justifies the means" was just annoying. Also the case should not be saying that" the end justifies the means" is bad and courts are good. I get it justice must be just but after AJ we know that sometimes "the end justifies the means" was necessary. And coustine court should not be praised like she is. Her motto is the "truth is only revealed through proper means" which again contradict AJ on how flawed the law is. Yes I know the non spoiler rule exist but at least dont say means motto is 100% evil and courte motto is 100% good Academy is very close to be the worst in DD for me(monstrous wins by 5%) The only things that safes is Athena being a leader 3/10 Cosmic turnabout is fine but only that My main problem is Clay terran I get it Apollo was nothing character in AJ so we need a backstory-I have no problems with that However, I could care less about Clay and his connections to apollo. Why capcom did not create interactions with him? Too impactful i guess(compare him to Misty fey and you will realize the problem- he is just another victim from AA universe) The first part of the case is meh but the case picks up in the 2nd trial And the twist about athena being the "killer" was very good Starbuck was annoying at the first time but he grow on me 6,5/10 And finally turnabout for tomorrow The 3rd worst finale in AA(if you compare to other finales in the series) So Trucy I forgot you existed Time for you shine.......oh wait nevermind Aura is interesting character(wish she would be in academy-imagine her beliefs clashed with Means and Courte for example) Edgeworth being back was nice I guess His objection voice sucks ofc The pacing at the start feels like it id moving too quickly(the robot uprising) but that is fine Now the trial. Yes I know that we need to make speculations but here there was too much speculation(this case felt like "what if" scenario-they are going back in forth and I did not like that) Now the phantom- the 3rd worst final villain there were no hints that fulbright is a phantom Build up yes hints no And if there is only a build up with no hints≠good twist Yes people will say that Jinxie said that Fulbright was a ghost but that "hint" is very very weak Also there is a scar on his right hand which is also weak but more believable Also he does not feel like a final villain. The real final villain should be his organization but ofc we will probably never know anything about them which is great btw The twist that real fulbright is dead is fine but again OUT OF NOWHERE Makes you think Why we did not get some investigations with real fulbright and then in case 4 he is replaced with phantom. That actually would be impactful if you caught the phantom and there is a opportunity to create more "real" hints about phantom's identity(e.g different behaviour) There are many people who say the same thing about phantom-he is controversial I felt no satisfaction whatsoever figuring out who phantom was, just pure confusion Fulbright being phantom raise contradictions as well. First of all Athena should be able to tell that fulbright has no emotions Second of all the entire segment with phantom is broken If he can disguise himself seamlessly, why would he not have done so for other characters in game Why does not he fake his emotions when we first use the mood matrix when his report shows that he has no emotions has long since been added to the court record Also his breakdown is running of pure emotions and fear when he is not supposed to any? Like the more you think about the phantom the less sense he makes as a character I could tell that DD team was planning this twist from the start and not planning anything cohesive So briefly I dont like this case cause of phantom,Athena not being a leader against phantom and Clay-apollo complex being so flat 4/10 Now my solutions Athena should be a leader in 5-1 Change 5-2 completely Also trucy will be more used here than 10 min 5-3 honestly I would replace apollo here with trucy(as a assistant) cause she is underutulized Means is not the culprit(but a accomplice) but Juniper(it would so intense for athena to Acknowledge that therefore development) Klavier-well i dont know what to do with him Make him a witness and let him have a conversation with athena about juniper(make him motivate athena to find the truth) Dark age of the law For me this plot is scrapped or at least modified So lets go with modification I would adress why Phoenix and Blackquill SPECIFICALLY caused it It is never explained properly hence people hate this plot(such as myself) Dlc- athena will be a leader for the first part of the trial, the second one is phoenix 5-4 I wouldnt change anything here, other than we will interact with clay so we will care about him Cause lets be real, at the end no one cares for him 5-5 my main problems is clay phantom and athena no being in the spotlight Clay problem is already fixed here so lets go with phantom First of all well will work with real fulbright in 5-2 dlc and 5-3 cause of: 1you can make ACTUAL hints to the phantom (different behaviour etc) 2 the twist hits harder 3 and also remove the whole emotion thing cause As i explained it created cotradictions Now athena She will be leader in the final part of the trial cause it is personal to take down the phantom Now everyone is balanced in the courtroom(except maybe apollo but he is already better) But if you dissatisfied we can fix it Apollo accusing athena was unexplored I would make that we actually investigate as apollo in case 4 and we see what he told us(it would make 5-4 plot twist even better) There we go Game fixed(at least for me)

Well I see all your point, it still doesn’t help fix my problem with the game, it’s lack of confidence. AJ as poorly / hastily written, had confidence in what it told. In contrast with DD’s hand holding, explaining plot points as they come up, and the “Danganronpa”-esk solution recognizer. Just screams of a game that lack confidence in itself and the players.
