Metro newspaper asked Lionel Richie if he'd kept it for himself. He replied: "Just the opposite. When I wrote the song for Kenny, I called my lawyer and said: 'If I put my voice on this it's going to be a smash, I want it.' My lawyer said: 'If you give it to Kenny, it will be bigger than you ever thought.' Now this was true. What I did not realize was that not only did I have my crowd, I picked up all of Kenny's following too. And that happened to be the rest of the world." Lionel Richie told Entertainment Weekly that this has been his most profitable song. Said Richie: "I have an estate that 'Lady' bought." 1980.

Not so. He only had the melody. Took it to the commodore who he was with at the time and they passed on it. I only know this because when artists had a special for Kenny and he told the story of how it was written. Go check it out. I don't want to ruin it for you but it's really funny and shows how damn talented Lionel is. The only thing I'll say is he hadn't written the song .

This is 1980. Sadly, Kenny passed away in 2020. He has some really cool songs that tell a story & have cool videos too. As for this song, the performance he did in 2012, with Lionel Richie. The friendship & the tune are just beautiful. Kenny is know for the quivering thing he does with his voice. Kinda his trademark.

Kenny has such an amazing voice. You saw him the other day when you did the USA For Africa reaction. He was a super huge country artist who did a lot of crossover collaborations. He actually has a video with him and Lionel Richie singing this song together. He passed in 2020. But we will always have his music. If you want to do another of his at some point check out “The Gambler” which is more uptempo and fun. You may actually have even heard it? Be well brother. 🤙

Kenny has some fantastic love songs, in addition to this one: She Believes In Me; Through the Years; Islands in the Stream (a duet with Dolly Parton); We've Got Tonight; Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer (a duet with Kim Carnes). But he is also very well-known for his amazing story-songs: The Gambler; Coward of the County; Lucille; Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town. And then there's that unique song that defies categorization: Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).

Kenny is a country music legend who had huge crossover hits on the Billboard charts. This was one of them. This came out in 1980 or so. I was 10 and remember hearing it on the radio a LOT. He was considered a silver fox because of that hair and beard. Women loved him, as you can hear from the screams in the crowd. This songs format is breath taking within itself..those build ups and break downs are powerful .It was well written by Lionel (second verse he wrote on the toilet, while Kenny was recording the first verse...his words, not mine) ...Kenny's unique sound and delivery, took it to a different level. He pitched this song to the Commodores, in his and Kenny's words, Lionel actually only had one word, "Lady", written, the rest was just a humming melody of how the song should go (not uncommon when pitching ideas). The collaboration worked, and it surpassed anyone's imagination. Kenny Roger's vibe has stood the test of time. Still strong imo.

That last line where Kenny says "You're My Lady" Is iconic IMO. Kind of in the same way Conway Twitty says "Hello Darlin."

I consider myself very blessed to have been born in 1969. I grew up and used to go to the roller skating rink almost every weekend and dance and skate to Disco and I love classic rock and of course you can't beat the '80s music that I grew up with in high school. I enjoy your reactions. It's nice to share and keep wonderful music alive. They don't make music or they don't make singers like Kenny Rogers anymore. I think he passed away last year
