Ever wonder what was involved in checking/adjusting the Desmo valves in a Ducati? This video compresses hours of labor to some key moments in the process.
Thanks to the Motor Cycle Center (teammcc.com) and the duc_doc, we got to see the work involved in tearing down a club member's Panigale 1199S for the valve service. See more pictures of motorcycle surgery by following the duc_doc on Instagram.

Sweet video, looks like the front valves were not in spec. I also was surprised to see the evaporation canister still on the bike and the stock air filter. When I got my Termignoni exhaust it also came with a high flow filter, and the evaporation canister is the first thing I took off because that is the biggest thing that causes difficult starts on the Panigale.

Haha probably true in general, but not that rare in the DRILL Ducati club. We ride! Last year I put around 5000 miles on my Ducati’s (terrible weather all season), the year before that around 6000. And we only get to ride about 6 months a year since Chicagoland area weather is generally shit. 😊✌️

From where I sit and while viewing this when you guys checked the valves on that horizontal cylinder, the opener lobes need to be in the rest position pointing straight up for proper clearance measurement don't they? Not sure about this bike design but all later Testrastretta engines need to be done that way for precise measuring.
@ilmostro16
@ilmostro16 6 жыл бұрын
Jay Marucci This was being done by a certified trained Ducati technician, I have no idea about the details here.
@jaymarucci1945
@jaymarucci1945 6 жыл бұрын
That doesn't mean it was done correctly my man. Im telling you that those opening cam lobes for intake and exhaust need to be sticking straight up 90 degrees in their "rest" position to get the proper measurement and cylinder at TDC. Your 1199 is no different. There are plenty resources that document that. Look here www.ducatitoolrental.com/Testastretta.html#Testastretta_Instruction I'm not a "certified ducati tech" but pretty damn good mechanic. I'm doing the DESMO service now on my Diavel. Beautiful bike BTW. Good luck with it.

@@ilmostro16 REALLY which douchebag was that...I owned a 999, BCM over bore kit, FBF prep engine.. valves check are simply as it gets,,..Honestly IF I owned this dealership, I'd be having a meltdown over these assholes wondering around a customers $50,000 motorcycle horsing around like 5 year olds...A shame because GOOD Ducati service techs are few and far between...IF your thinking of buying a Duc, do not buy it here..If you own one and it needs servicing DO NOT get it serviced here...
@massivemikeh
@massivemikeh 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on this, but as long as the cam lobe is not acting on the rocker he should be ok. I measure my 996 in the top position and a few degrees either side. Cheers.

I expected a little more information, it’s good for people to see what needs to be removed but I was hoping to get a look into how the valves actually operate and how you change shims for the valve lash adjustment. Looks like in the video we were only one or two steps away from learning that.

Is that cam wear normal?
@ilmostro16
@ilmostro16 4 жыл бұрын
You can’t see cam wear from the video, that’s just surface finish after thousands of miles. You’d have to take the cams to a CMM and measure their profile down to microns to see any wear lol. The cams will have far less wear in a Desmo engine than a standard one with valve springs because the cams aren’t under valve spring pressure all the time like standard engines. In a standard engine that uses strong valve springs, the cams have to apply enough pressure to push open the valves against the springs. There is none of that in a Ducati engine since there are no valve springs to force open. In fact, the cams aren’t under any pressure in a desmodromic valve system.

Doing valves correctly requires more than watching any KZfaq video, so anyone who wants to learn to do that shouldn’t be going to KZfaq.
