The Trident is the practical choice, but the Scrambler screams personality, fun and the versatility to go chuck it around some muddy country lanes. I would love that bike one day.

Better to go for desert sled if that is your plan. Suspension is more harsh than you might think.

@@briansteele2723 from experience i know you can offroad on any bike. You just have to slow down if your on a road bike. But going 20-30kmh offroad is not bad for me at least. Maybe you cant do it as good but its definately possible

I have had a Ducati Scrambler since 2015. The suspension is harsh so upgraded that front and rear and after a few more mods its been a brilliant fun bike with no issues at all. I bought a Ninja 650 in 2017 when they first came out with the revised model, did well as a light tourer but the engine just lacked power and got rid of it this year. Now have the Tiger Sport 660 on order which uses the same engine as in the Trident, which I test rode and am happy to say it produces enough power to keep me happy. Already booked ferry to Spain to put it through its paces next June in the awesome mountains of the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa.

@@rtb8085 At the time, my existing bike was the Benelli Leoncino 500. My thoughts after riding the Ducati left me flat, and being that the cost to upgrade to the Ducati was more than that of the Triumph (for the same year), It was really a very easy decision. Riding the Triumph felt like a major upgrade to the Benelli, unfortunately the Ducati didn't. As I said, everyone is different but after 1 hour test ride on the Ducati, it just didnt compare to the quality, comfort of the Triumph.

@@robbo8099 May I ask which Scrambler you rode? I have a friend in Alaska who got the Desert Sled, and he RAVES about how great it is, and Alaska's not known for their civilized roads. One of the things I find so unique about the Ducati Scrambler is the variance between the models. The Desert Sled is quite a bit more performance-minded for off-roading that the other models are, but I'm contemplating the 1100 Sport since I'm the opposite of tiny.

Tough choice. Obviously you could mount a case for getting 1 of each. A Desert Sled for weekend camping, getting away. The Trident for week day commuting.

Between the two it's an easy pick for me. It's the Triumph Trident. Have been and will always be a Triumph fan. The sound of a triple in my mind can't be beat.

Have the Ducati and think the comparison is a fair one. Thought about the Trident, but preferred stripped-back (air-cooled) nature of the Scrambler and that V-twin. It's a lovely bike to ride. I think it's great that both bikes are not too tall or heavy, like many bikes these days.

Ducati Scrambler more comfortable??? The stock seat is a Spanish pony torture device, the high bars are completely mismatched with the footrest position, the footrests force you into a pigeon toed angle, and the engine heat is like sitting on a barbeque. I own a Ducati Scrambler by the way, and despite its many flaws, I love it. When shopping for a bike I looked long and hard at the Trident, and I probably should have bought that one...

mmm it's been a while, but from memory the Scrambler was a bit gutless despite it's engine size compared to the rather zippy Triumph. The Scrambler sits very low and geometry is not as nimble as the Triumph. The little Triumph just feels planted around corners and is rewarding both in curvy country roads and citty lane filtering. That being said, if I had to do dirt roads then of course it's the Scrambler for the win.

Great to see this comparison. I have a 2019 Scrambler Full Throttle which I love, but I’ve been following the Trident with interest. Not sure I could part with my bike for a Trident though.

I've had a Ducati Scrambler Classic but can't comment on the Trident. Totally different bikes of coarse. The Scrambler is more than capable off road especially with standard low gearing. You need a bash plate for anything a bit more serious to protect your filter. The Ducati feels so small with a low seat height and lite weight it inspires confidence and does incredibly well even off the beaten track. They have put a substantially bigger rear sprocket on the scrambler compared to the Monster. This makes the throttle very sensitive which isn't great off road especially with no ride modes. It cry's out for a smaller sprocket on the rear to heap smooth out the throttle response as well as improving comfort and economy with a lower revving engine at highway speeds. Needs a linked chain for servicing. The Ducati is ultra smooth on the open road and the only sense of vibration is under load when accelerating out of a corner or climbing a hill if you're not in the sweet spot of rpm band. Yes you can put luggage on the Ducati for weekends away-Hepco becker C bow system from Motorcycle adventure products in australia + the soft luggage (street bags).

One thing that's difficult to measure but super important when choosing a bike is how fun it is to ride. The scrambler has that fun factor in spades. I imagine the Trident does too because they are both in that 80bhp bracket where you can use all of the power all of the time.

Exactly. I rode both yesterday and the beforehand I was pretty sure I would like the trident more. But I fell in love with the scrambler. It’s the most fun bike I have ever tried. Not sure what it is really? It just wants you to play and make you feel comfortable doing so.

In terms of design and general looking of the bike I'd go for the Trident, no doubt. But, and this is a big one, regarding the character I'd probably choose the Scrambler. So it's a very hard choice really. Great comparison by the way!

For reliability I'm going with the Triumph. From what I have seen in my motorcycle social circles, the Ducati spends too much time in the shop.

I guess for my old body and bumpy back roads the Ducati's suspension fits the bill more for what I am doing but I have found the Ducati kind of short and turns in fast . That being said by a happy Street Scrambler owner . I am sure they are both an engaging ride .. All the best from New England .. Guy

Good comparison on the bikes. Maybe an air cooled monster like the 797/796/795 is a closer competitor to the trident IMO because it’s slightly better specced than a Scrambler.

I rented a Ducati scrambler last weekend on ride share whilst my triumph is in the shop - more upgrades - and the little moto was a demon!! Super torquey and fun - found it to be super comfortable in the saddle and over all ergonomics and really a blast in the twisties - that said, i agree it’s pretty mechanical, lo tech and kinda twitchy - brakes, gearing, throttle are all rough but all in all, it’s a great little ripper!! I’ll still be happier to get back on my Triumph.

I’ll stick with the Triumph street scrambler - it’s just a little smoother all the way around and the modern classic fits my ideal aesthetic…That said, the Desert Sled is tempting me!!

I had both a street twin and a v9 and much prefer the Guzzi. Only bad with the v9 was the ergonomics, this is where the v7 comes in.

Hi. The scrambler didn't last long .. had a series of electrical issues. Was fun while it lasted. Bit jumpy in low gears and slow speed. Great on the move and lots of torque. Gone to a honda as wanted reliability and ended up with a CBR650R.. epic bike and actually starts ans runs lol

I’ve had a Scrambler for 2’years and live in South of France. I like it but am considering triumphs as i move away from A2. For a new rider the throttle can be snatchy and you end up riding the clutch. The stock tyres may look nice but should be swapped out for better road tyres. Worst point though is the heat that the bike pumps out if driving around in town, it is like sitting on an oven. Looking forward to getting mine de-restricted but will likely upgrade to base Street Triple or Trident. Will test those bikes on a warm day and compare undercarriage cooking qualities

After euro 6 is here we can say goodbye to cable throttles. Its sad truth. Luckily bikes are still good but just look at what happened to cars

Ridden full throttle and cafe racer , test rode trident at weekend. All good bikes. Trying nightshift model shortly . Trident is torquey, but think the scrambler has more presence. decision time soon!

A no brainer for me, the Trident. It will be faster, more reliable, and cost less to maintain and run. The Ducati 800 engine is getting very long in the tooth now and despite it being a 'good' engine, it's still an air cooled engine with cam belts, and 2 valves per cylinder. I am mildly surprised the Ducati can meet Euro 5 emissions.

Not ridden a trident but do now ride a triumph. Triumphs are great bikes. I have a lot of affection for the Ducati air cooled 800. It has great character and is a lot of fun. I think like all things, ride them both.

No mention of the difference in the sounds they make? That seems like a significant factor to me since it contributes so much to the character, but I suppose that is a bit subjective and can be changed around quite a bit depending on what slip-on or full system you install.

Quite different bikes so a difficult one as people would buy for different reason's but certainly if you wanted an all round bike capable of off/on road then definitly the scrambler. The scrambler is very capable off road because of it's low centre of gravity with one cylinder right forward-engine low in frame-low seat height & for an 803cc is probably one of the lightest in it's class & the new icon is even lighter. You do need a bash plate off road & the standard bars are superb off or on road. Scrambler also has a superb side stand if you're off road & you stop on uneven ground as it has a descent angle to it otherwise seat quite low so if camera around your neck you can simply sit astride the bike with 1 foot on the brake if on uneven ground & get that great photo without having to get off the bike. Icon Dark has better suspension-fuel gauge & gear indicator as well as better seat. It's also easy to put a termigoni exhaust on the Ducati & it sounds amazing without being annoying.

I used to ride my 1973 Honda 754 cc bike off road. But i would never think of it as a dirt bike. I have even jumped hills with it. It was an amazing bike till my brother stole it, and blew the engine up.

@@morbidrockgod it got hot if you were stuck in traffic but generally it wasn’t an issue. It had great character, but air cooled engines can get warm. Guess it depends on the riding you’ll be doing.

i had a 2015 icon. what an unreliable - and expensive - piece of shit. clutch plates failed and left me stranded for several hours. took a month to get it fixed back because parts just take damn forever when ordering from ducati. i'd pick the triumph all the way. better looking, and it's a great bike with high reliability. just my 2 pennies.

Stanley Blazeraznik There is a stand alone Ducati dealer 40 minutes from me. Service area has more bikes in it then the showroom. Ducati dealers should take a page from Harley and hide the shop behind closed doors without windows. Triumph for me.

I have the 2020 Scrambler Icon 800, but I also love the tech and look of the Trident. I get a lot of attention on the Scrambler though and I love the retro look in yellow. I’ll take both. 😈

This is a tough one, the only thing that would keep me from the Ducati is the belts and replacement cost. The usual bucket and shim configuration is normally good for many miles over the inspection/adjustment interval. But both are superb bikes.

Great bikes, but why in the UK is the triumph so expensive when it's made in Thailand? I expect to pay a premium for the ducati as the euro ones were/are made in Italy, but when the other is made in Asia I expect it to be a lot cheaper. I know cars and bikes have components from around the world these days..

I was real close to buying the Ducati scrambler until researching the tons of issuses people have with them. Number one heat issuses. I live in South Florida. You don't mention the difference between the trident and scrambler air cooled vs water cooled. Probably does not matter in Europe.

I will never buy a bike with uneven cylinder amounts. But the looks of the Triumph has a nice look. I just don't think i will buy an Italy bike. I like British and Japan bikes most.

You should compare with the Ducati Cafe Racer instead. Same engine with Scramble, but road only focus. I had been on/off with Scramble for awhile now (before Trident) just because I hate the dash, the rpm is going the wrong way.

It’s hard to get bikes from dealers at the moment as some aren’t operating their demo fleet until covid restrictions lift in mid April. So I’m making do with what I can get hold of, but I definitely want to try out the nightshift soon - think it replaced the cafe racer this year in the scrambler range.

Trident for me, what a bike !! ...but would prefer it with the traditional Triumph logo from the Street Triple. Union Jack waving is not something I want to be doing right now .

I don’t have any long term first hand experience of Ducati reliability, but my triumphs (trident, street twin) have been solid

I like both bikes...but I wonder if I can sit well with 1.89m on these bikes?I must soon test ride both (plus Moto Guzzi V7 850)! I am very happy with my Royal Enfield Conti, but I need a little more power.

Every owner of the Ducati twins have horror stories. Most common is about the design of the engine, how the belt would snap off and destroy 1 or both cylinders or poor quality parts. Squeaky cam pulleys. I was happy for Ducati when they launched the v4. It was the best for Ducati.This, and the multi Strada V2 inherited a bad design. The triumph trident is proven triple engine, re- engineered from already proven triple 600 engine. Reliable, everything will work and fires up in the morning. You can't go wrong with the trident.

Servicing is also better on the Triumph side. Ducati is (was??) still fond of the desmodromic valves that when need a change... it eats half a trip on a cruise to Bahamas.

I like them both ! I don't want to ride off road, and the triple engine would clinch it for me. I love the Triumph Triples. Red paint on the Ducati looks nice, but I could always respray a Trident. Changing the engine is a bit of a harder "mod" !!! So for me the Trident. I'd probably also like riding the Scrambler. So many bikes , so little time and money !

I'm looking to step up from an SR400 that I love, but can't keep up with riding mates on bigger bikes and if MT07 vs Trident vs CB650r wasn't hard enough, now the Ducati is in the mix...I mean, it's a fun problem but AAARRRGGHH

Bought the trident after weighing things out. 10,000 mile service interval for the Triumph --- pretty sure the Ducati can't match.

My scrambler is unbearable hot before the first oil change when I was stuck on city traffic. After the first service things got better, but still hot.

I test rode a Scrambler when it first came out and it had a really uncomfortable seat and the bars were hard to reach when in full lock. Was so disappointed.

There’s a new seat from 2019 onwards and the bike comes with an Allen key in the tool kit to adjust the bars.

Lol in my country, the 660 shares the same price with the Sixty2. And yes, the Scrambler 800cc is 1.5 time more expensive than the Trident.

Well to each his own and if you know yourself as a sane beginner, you can go with either. And as far as the handlebars and seating position in the stock scrambler, it’s definitely a more easier and confidence inspiring motorcycle. If you can take it slow from day 1, you’ll soon get it right.. Wishing you good luck with your purchase and hope you ride safe always:) Also, my first bike on which I learned ..(and I’m still learning each day😊) to ride is a 2021 scrambler icon.
