Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest actors living today, but also one of the most misunderstood. We all know him for his oscar winning role in The Joker, The gladiator and recently Napoleon. But behind the camera’s he’s very mysterious and not a fan of interviews, making it difficult to tell when he is joking or being serious. He has been acting ever since he was young and so deeply embodies his characters, that it’s sometimes hard to get a grasp on who he really is. This is the turbulent life of Joaquin Phoenix, and an attempt to understand the man behind the many faces.

I can only imagine the conversations DeNiro and he might have had if they weren't both pretty much all about method acting for such serious roles. They see it as a responsibility, and as a (now retired) actor of 30+ years, I totally resonate.

Yes! So many actors play exactly the same person in every film they make. (eg John Mills) but I saw several Joachim Phoenix films before I realised that it was actually the same actor in all of them. 😂. If it wasn’t for his scar, I would not have recognised him. NOW of course, now that I know who he is, I want to see everything he does.

no he is just someone whose really good at manipulating other peoples emotions.... an artist builds something beautiful, an actor is nothing without a script or a director telling him what to feel or how to feel it. case in point, your emotions makes you believe this guy is something more than he isn't.

Yup. 😓 More verification that just because someone is a good person, great soul, is kind, etc. doesn't guarantee longevity and success. The innocent and talented often die whilst the corrupt and rich live... and also, the opposite. It's completely random, all things considered.

He was Johnny Cash?(in Wallk the Line I'm guessing?) Damn, that was a good portrayal from him, what a life that man had and all the emotional turmoil was Felt. I'll be perfectly honest, other than the ending and the strange dance in the bathroom, I thought his Joker film was a solid 8.5/10 simply due to the mixed messages of the director and all the misdirection to take you away from it all and make you think is it all in his head or not? And Commodus in Gladiator, holy shit bro, most people can't forget Russell Crowe as the Maximus, but my god his Commodus was solid as a portrayal of a "real" cunt of a character.@@berylanjous6932

It was Gladiator where Joaquin Phoenix became one of my favorites. I liked him in other roles but that one put him off the charts. Walk the line was also a fantastic movie. I was heartbroken when he declared he was going to quit acting. Then I saw his... Documentary (?) about his life. He was going through a lot at that point and was trying to get back into acting. No one would hire him at that point. When it came out that he was going to be the Joker, "how perfect" was my words. And he is the best Joker ever.

What do you mean nobody has played Harry Houdini yet? There's a really good movie about him. 2007s _Death Defying Acts_ (starring Guy Pearce and Catherine Zeta-Jones) It's from the perspective of a little girl who's mother was a psychic & had an affair with Houdini. Guy Pearce did a GREAT job in that role. Altho, I'd definitely go see Phoenix in that role, if he ever took it on. In the meantime, I recommend you check out _Death Defying Acts_

00:19 🎭 Joaquin Phoenix is renowned for his portrayal of dark and unconventional characters, notably winning an Oscar for his role in "The Joker." 01:27 🕊 Phoenix's upbringing in a nomadic lifestyle within the Children of God religious community influenced his early interest in acting. 03:51 💔 Tragedy struck when Phoenix's brother, River Phoenix, died of a drug overdose at 23, leading Joaquin to step away from acting for two years. 05:36 🏹 Phoenix's role in "Gladiator" marked a turning point in his career, showcasing his commitment to method acting and earning him his first Oscar nomination. 07:43 🤯 Joaquin Phoenix's dedication to method acting goes to extremes, altering his appearance, adopting mannerisms, and conducting extensive research for each role. 09:32 🎸 Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" earned him a Golden Globe, but his immersive approach took a toll on his mental health, leading to a period of addiction. 11:49 😅 Joaquin Phoenix's apparent retirement and venture into rap, revealed in the mockumentary "I'm Still Here," was a humorous yet misunderstood move. 14:20 🎭 Post-"I'm Still Here," Phoenix showcased a diverse range of roles, proving his acting prowess, culminating in his transformative performance as the Joker, winning him an Oscar. 16:57 ❤ Phoenix's Oscar acceptance speech emphasized growth, redemption, and the importance of supporting each other, reflecting his commitment to authenticity and positive impact.

Leaving my comment here but I just have watched all episodes from the "Actors" playlist. Mind-blowing - thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The way how you're putting them together, the story telling is outstanding. Nothing I have seen in a looong while. Please don't stop. It was a short break I needed from all of the mundane things but most importantly, it was a realization that I still love cinema, movies and why I was watching movies like crazy as a teenager and young adult. Thank you.

I have always been a fan of Joaquin, I think the first time I saw him act in anything was Gladiator, but seeing him in Quills (one of my favourite films), Signs, and The Village, I knew I was a fan. I also loved Her and Walk the Line, and of course he absolutely nailed the Joker. He deserved to win that Oscar finally, though I think that most of his roles deserved to win. I have been skipping the Oscars for a long time now, like, the last one I went out of my way to watch was when Return of the King won Best Picture...but I made a point to watch the one where Joaquin won for Joker, and his acceptance speech had me sobbing by the end of it, and still whenever I hear it, I am brought to tears. He deserves all the awards, praise, and acclaim, and thank you for this video! He is a complex person, an outstanding actor, and so deeply emotional and talented...I didn't know they were making another Joker, but I'm very excited to see him play the role again! Apparently it's a musical and Lady Gaga is playing Harley!

I loved him in signs and his role of the comforting brother within a home of family who just lost their mother was his most tender character, I always believed his name in that film his name was Merril, very similar to Miracle and his swing away literally saved his family's life.

@@Schrodingers_Kat His sister Rain is the combative type of vegan. I met her at a house party in Gainesville when Joaquin was about 15. I was eating McDonald's at the kitchen table and she walked in and saw me. We spent the next 30-odd minutes arguing over eating meat and she eventually went outside in a huff. She could have just ignored me and enjoyed the party but no, she had to go on a crusade. Joaquin just rode his skateboard around town and hassled no one.

No real mention of how good looking Phoenix is. Part of why he is handsome is the deep compassion and empathy it takes to choose to be a vegan and to remain true to that commitment. He doesn't have extraordinary, or unbelievable, good looks but a 'guy you could meet in the real world' vibe. It's like he is lit from within by his talent, kindness and mercy.

I did not view this video, nor did I read any comments. Juaquin Phoenix's performance was stellar. No other movie, TV show, or interview has ever brought to light the extrordinary life of the Joker character. The director, producer, sound and visual professionals of course added to the unbeatable performance of JP, however it is he who openned my eyes to the torment and fragility of the Joker persona. I found myself sad and teary feeling his inexcapable anguish. Kuddos Mr. Phoenix. Well Done!
