In this video I hooked up with Mr. Errol Dennis and his sons Errol Jr. and Scott. We made a duck hunt in Delacroix, Louisiana. It was cool to hear Mr. Errol and the boys reflect back on their years of duck hunting.

Someone asked me where my sanctuary was and after a moment of thought I said “Duck Hunting”. No one in my immediate family duck hunts so I didn’t grow up doing it. They stopped long ago after the glory days of the 70s and 80s (they used to hunt Lake Mary/ SE Louisiana). This was my first year doing it and teaching myself along the way. Whether I was dragging a kayak through the marshes at Pointe Aux Chenes or leaving my house at 230 in the morning a bad day out there is a better day than any. Granted I wish there were more ducks, but to me it’s more about the adventure and the pursuit. You’re constantly forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone and try something new or explore some random new place you found on google earth in the dark and hope like hell its a good spot. I appreciate it as an experience and have taken that interest and learned more than I ever thought possible about waterfowl. I love it and it’s cool to see the old timers recounting their experiences.

I think Mr. Errol is right on with the migration thoughts. With the winters not being as severe as they used to be the ducks are only going as far south as they have to. I am down in Southwest Florida, near the Ding Darling wildlife sanctuary. Ding Darling was the man that started the duck stamp program to help wildlife way back. The sanctuary with his name on it used to hold 10's of thousands of ducks. Now there may be five or ten individual ducks on the whole place. I believe that ducks also need pathfinders to bring them back to an area year after year. If you wipe them out from an area one time you may not see any there again for many years. Great video and insight into the marsh loss. Thanks for doing it and keep on!

Did it here in south Florida over 30 years on lake okeechobee and the glades mostly, but it has all gone to crap.... not only aren’t the ducks migrating, but our state has sprayed every weed in sight so there’s no food for the ducks anymore. Just found your channel, glad I did! You touched on some very interesting stuff. My father was born in 1938, he started waterfowl hunting in the late 60’s. I remember sitting in a goose pit at a very young age. I loved listening to the stories. We hunted the eastern shore MD/Va and Delaware. Back in the 80’s the Atlantic flyway was the spot. 20 man limits of geese and ducks were not an issue. I’m in my mid 40’s now and I’m considered the “old man”. I take my kids and their friends water fowling. And they listen to the stories from me and my buddies. But you can tell the birds aren’t there like they used to be. Now they are talking about closing or dropping the mallard limit again. After just dropping the limit this past season. I think water fowl hunting is definitely in a crisis situation. I remember when mallards were all you saw. Now you hardly see them at least during the second and third split of our season.

I’ve hunted South Louisiana my entire Life. It will unfortunately never be the same again. DU and delta waterfowl etc along with growing population of outfitters up north have shifted the migration. Also loss of wetlands in Louisiana & higher temperatures all across the country are the main contributors to the problem. Maybe someone day people will get together to fix these issues but I feel it’s already to late.

There is nothing for the Ducks to eat in the Mississippi Delta. When they started the ethanol mandate the farmers stopped planting beans and started growing corn. They start harvesting corn in August and by the time the Ducks get down here the fields are disc and what is left is sprouting. The Delta in the winter is just miles and miles of dirt, where it used to be a lot of unplowed soybean fields.

In the 90’s with a 3 duck limit we shot 2 mallards and a pintail every morning we hunted no matter how many people we had with us ! Around the time the limit went to 5 then 6 we barely saw any mallard or pintail but where shooting limits of widgeon and greys come 06-07 there was a drastic decline by 2012 no ducks even thoug there was plenty grass for them to eat ! It doesn’t take a genius to figure it out!!!! As for delacroix I firmly believe that water from the river could be put through it that would build it like the atchafalya but then you ruin oyster ground increases flooding not to mention that the Mississippi government thinks we’re flooding them when we open the spillway! Sorry for the ramble this is all very personal to me grew up duck hunten In south east Louisiana raised my kid that way now it’s looking doubtful they’ll be able to do the same!!!

I have been going to south central Saskatchewan since early 80's From Northern Il. a 20 hr. drive. Even up there thing have changed a lot. The locals that I hunt with used to go anywhere without asking. They knew all the landowners. Now there are groups from the East coast, the Carlolina's, Texas and California that stay for 2 to 3 weeks and and they pay landowners to hunt big farms of 6 or 7 sections or more. They can only hunt a tiny portion of it but keep everybody else out. It still can be excellent but you have to search a lot further to find birds

Today you are lucky to see some woodies! The black bellied ducks are usually gone from the WMA once the season starts. If I want to kill birds, I have to leave the WMA for sure! I think for us, salvania attributed to some of the birds leaving and never coming back.

Great channel and video.👍 South Louisiana is VERY important for migrating ducks/geese on the Gulf Coast, but let’s remember ALL of Louisiana has been affected by this migration shift. Mallards are not the norm in NE Louisiana too, and the effect of not having ducks on the coast means no ducks in the timber. Past seasons decades ago saw the loss of migrating Canadas to the coast. Climate change was not a factor then as much as “attractive habitat developments”- aka corn placed in designated NWR- caused the loss of Canadas to provide “opportunities” for Northern hunters in the upper Mississippi Flyway. Now, learning from the success of shortstopping Canadas, ducks now are taking their place, increased dramatically after the Quota Zone was terminated in 1997. Within 3 years, areas in Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana to name a few built levees to hold water for the unharvested crops within them. Encouraged by their respective state wildlife agencies as they themselves initiated new projects to provide duck hunting, the shift to another species as the Canada goose commercial hunting has waned was the only way their business could survive. We had been warned in the 60’s that this would happen if states did not care about other states opportunities for waterfowl hunting, but as long as the mighty dollar dictates waterfowl migration, Louisiana will be on the losing end every time. FYI, LDWF left the Mississippi Flyway Council for 8 years 1968-1976, so this DRAMA 5 decades ago then has unfortunately been forgotten. They knew what the future could be for Louisiana, and now we see it firsthand. Sure is sad.😞😞😞

The worst part about duck hunting is duck hunters. I thought them PA Yinzers were bad during deer or turkey season and the Dutch Navy was bad during the trophy rockfish season. However, they don’t come close to the attitude, arrogance, and ignorance I experienced while on the marsh’s in Maryland. I tried sticking it out for a couple years but I just ended up selling everything at a loss and so I haven’t been at it since. Even if I was the first one on the water I always seemed to end up between an aspiring competition caller and Luke Skybuster. The boat rides were fun, the sunrises were great, and every now and then I was able to get my hands on some of the best color palates around. I sure would have liked to have seen the good ol days these guys are talking about in the comments. I think I missed it by a couple decades.

@@OutsidetheLevees Yinzer is a western PA slang term spoken in second person plural. They are a group of individual frequently experienced around the western MD public lands. These guys excel in close quarters stand sitting and Blitzkrieg style tactics against hunters actively working turkeys into range. If you’re hunting 50,000 acres believe me they will be sitting within the same acre as you. The Dutch Navy or Brown Water Navy is the invading force from the Lancaster area that like also excel close quarters tactics. These guys are able and willing to drive over and cut anchor lines and or trolling lines with surgical precision . They are the reasons you keep bass rods loaded with heavy rattle traps to cast in their direction so you can defend your tethered possession. That’s your best defense since cannons are no longer an option for privateers.

Always good to learn and hear from the old guard of duck-waterfowl hunting. I hunt on a legendary body of water named Currituck Sound. from early 1900 until today this body of water has had many changes. wealthy hunt club dominated early hunters and as county owned duck blind in marsh-open water are highly regulated these are the changes that have added to public access and caused poor hunting. to many new hunters are not respectful of each other.. a duck call is learned from time and not bought from a online store... firing your 1000.00 gun at 50 yard ducks without knowing what your shooting at.. steel shot will not kill many ducks pass 30 years.. Many more changes are in this recent past. Corn and ag crop impoundment are another key factor just greed and money are stopping marsh-sound blinds from having successful hunts....I am a duck hunter now for 47 years.. I have seen it all. Broken all game laws. I am the outlaw gunner or once was.. I get cold now and only shoot teal, pintail, widgeon and still in search for the drake canvasback.

Kinda sad about the negativity in these comments. Duck Hunting is not what it was when my dad was growing up but we still have what we love and I think we should try to cherish it and better it rather than complaining. New hunters who cover themselves in faceblack and skyblast are flooding the sport so instead of push them away, try to bring them in and teach them the courtesies of the sport. The migration of the ducks may never return to what it once was (I’ve only been seeing wood ducks the past few years out here) but we together can adapt to what its become. I really enjoyed the film of the old hunts and the Photographs. In 1981 A group of 2 shot 40 greenhearts on one hunt on the ridge between Bayou Perot and the Barataria Waterway. They actually had to go get more shells from C&M to finish the hunt,Eddie Sapie told me he was arrested via helicopter for shooting 25 male Pintails over a baited pond near Bayou Dupont . The problem is the birds don't come to Lafitte anymore .This year on my former lease there were 2 limits killed :grey ducks ,teal and dos gris.We used to kill 18 grey duck, pintails and mallards before 730 AM in the 1990's in the same placeThe problem is Mallards and Pintails are short stopped in places like Missouri ,Kansas and Oklahoma. They use flooded unharvested corn fields that were illegal till 1997 and machines called ice eaters to keep the ponds from freezing. Why should a duck fly south if there is food and water?

Breaks my heart to see em fly away with their hearts shot plumb full of holes.. I stopped duck hunting and that was the last hunting I held on to. It got too expensive driving longer and longer distances trying to find a few birds. I really just got tired of killing. I never got tired of watching the birds work the decoys , then drop in like the magazines show. Theres no prettier sight. I thought about working on a book about modern day waterfowling. How different its become from the old days. The climate change , with cold weather with snow and northeastern storms caused a change in migration patterns. Habitat destruction of the nesting grounds limit populations. It was enviable.

It started with the leveeing of the Mississippi River. While necessary to prevent flooding it stopped the river from building and maintaining the wetlands. After that they dredged oil and gas canals all throughout the coast. This brought more saltwater in and killed off vegetation. Big hurricanes did most of the rest. And now sea level rise.

This subject has been on my mind for 40 years. Will someone contact me to discuss the future of waterfowling, the habitat and the ducks. Although, groups like DU and Delta, along with more grassroots organizations have helped, the overall conditions and attitudes (specifically the entitled generation) have degraded. If there's Not a change in the mindsets of some, (the greedy "mine, not yours" and the "scorched earth, gangbanging, empty the gun" style of hunting (which is some people's attitude about life), while certainly be the demise of the future of waterfowling. "We" the true waterfowlers have a love and respect of the sport, excuse me...WAY OF LIFE that goes well beyond the annual season. It's a 24/7 passion of not only killing the ducks, but securing a healthy habitat and attitude that supports future generations of waterfowl, hunters and a healthy ecosystem. Serious inquiries only and "we" could possibly salvage the future of waterfowling.

Mississippi river control structures, Oil and Gas pipeline dredging and Climate Change (milder winters, more drastic hurricanes) have delivered massive salt water intrusion and changed Louisiana for good. It's such a shame, but at this point it is impossible to reverse and too economically motivated.
