This Beetle came to me with both heater channels nearly destroyed and huge holes in the vw floors. I was asked if I could replace these and the VW Beetle heater channels and of course I could. So here's the video of me performing a Volkswagen floor pan replacement from start to finish.
VW Beetle Floor Pan Replacement really isn't all that hard. If you've never replaced a VW floor pan this video is for you!
First you need to find the VW Floor Pans specific to your year. Once you've got those picked out then you remove the body and cut out the VW floor pan. Once the VW floors are removed, you then clean off any other rust with a wire brush and afterwards with a rust converter and let it sit overnight. The next morning you take your brand new VW floor pans and lay them in position in your chassis. Once you have your vw bug floor pan replacement parts in position, cut off any excess and align them properly. For floor pan replacement VW Beetle it really is that easy!
VW Thing floor pan replacement is exactly the same, however the vw floor pan repair is completed with much wider VW Floor pans such as those from a Karmann Ghia.
Yes, I know... the whole procedure wasn't completed in 25 minutes, but this video depicts how I did it in about 25 minutes of run time. :-P

When you see a guy put that much effort into painting what amounts to a car's subfloor, which will never be seen by the owner, you know it's a guy who cares about his work. I wish KZfaq would have come along ten years earlier. It probably would have saved my old dear departed Ghia. You truly can fix anything on these cars given enough info and motivation. Thanks for helping keep these old timers out of the crusher, Duckman.

DuckmanCycles and VW Garage I'm doing some rust work on an old 98 xj jeep cherokee man I keep getting discouraged when I think it's is looking up I find more rust. What can I use to stop or slow rust in areas I can never get to to prep like channels and cavities. Have you ever used eastwood products do they work? I really really like the acid idea I'll be looking for it too
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 6 жыл бұрын
Acid for sure, but you really need to wire brush anything that you can get to. Once the acid dries away there are inner chassis waxes and tar type coatings with super long 360 degree nozzles that allow you to spray deep in the inner crevices. Otherwise you have to cut holes and attack things from the outside... which in the case of my oval was probably the best thing to do. :-) Eastwood has a lot of great stuff but I find them to be a little bit expensive when you can find the same things elsewhere without their name for less money. One thing that Eastwood is, is marketing Geniuses! Their name is just everywhere anymore! Thanks for the questions!

Long time VW guy here and I was doing this back 40 years ago. You have a knack for cutting right o the chase and pointing out what needs to be done, although I must admit the chassis you have to work with was pretty straight forward. Up this way we were seeing floor pans in this condition on a 10 year old vehicle and after that the end braces for the front suspension would start to rot. I had to sell my 69 bug for parts when it was 9 years old! (bought it new) It was too far gone. Heater channels too at an early age. Yup, salt on the roads and water leaks everywhere did her in. While I'm here, I should also point out that it's easier to find all of these restoration parts now than it was in the 70s.... internet and all. Oh, for those on a budget, the plasma cutter is nice but not a high priority. (read: expensive) OTOH, for any project like this a wire feed welder is the cat's ass, along with a decent grinder and an air type cut-off wheel. Add a tape measure and a hand full of specialty vice-grips and you can fix anything.
@DuckmanCycles

Thanks do much for this awesome comment and praise! I really can't thank you enough! This one made my day! Most videos I usually show the work done in 5 minutes, this is actually one of my longer videos and surprisingly has gained some huge popularity. I am from NJ myself, I understand what you mean by these cars just rotting to bits from all the salt. The plasma cutter was expensive, no doubt, but the amount of money I made using the tool paid for it many times over... for the average "Harry Homeowner" working in their own driveway that may not be the best investment. I absolutely LOVE by box of vice grips! Seems any time I find some on sale I buy a few more. Thanks again for your comments! I really REALLY appreciate you, and I hope you subscribed! Lots more videos to come! :)
@rupe53
@rupe53 6 жыл бұрын
BTW, where a plasma cutter really shines is fabrication work. You can dice up scraps of metal almost as easily as using a straight edge and a utility knife on drywall. My personal project of the moment is a '64 Corvair van and I am having to make a zillion small parts because NOBODY makes aftermarket body metal. I actually made a cardboard template for a door skin then transferred that to fresh metal with the plasma cutter. Yeah, the cardboard caught fire but it can do the job if you work quickly! BTW, wish I could find better (read: fairly rust free) bugs up this way. It would be fun to tackle another in my retirement. I might even have some NOS parts still laying around!
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 6 жыл бұрын
Put up some videos of that Corvair! I want to see! It'd be great seeing you burning your cardboard templates with your plasma cutter. Haha! I'd subscribe! Thanks again for the comment and the story, lol!

Maybe in a year or so after I retire I'll get around to learning about how to post videos on YT. Right now I'm too much of a cave man / technophobe to understand that part, although I do have near 1,000 pix of the Corvair project now that I am comfy doing digital cam work.

I really enjoyed watching how you went about putting in the new VW Type 1 floor pans because I hope to do a full restoration of a Beetle and am well aware that the floor pans are notorious for rusting, especially given all the decades these car have been running around. @@DuckmanCycles you can bet that I'll be watching all of them. You see, I'm 65 years old. Starving artist. Given the complexity of modern cars I think very few cars in the decades to come will be restored. But the Volkswagen Beetle is eminently restorable and rebuildable and that's the key.

You made it look easy! I used to have a 71 AutoStick that was a hoot! I was a receiver at the auction in Baltimore that I believe is part of the Manhiem Group. I lived in West Baltimore City and sometimes the county but I bombed it on I-695, I-95 & other very busy roads with a 1/4 sheet of plywood to retain my carpool buddy and my driver's set had a brick on the heater channel & seat frame to keep my seat from rubbing on the road! #3 plug was the derathkneel!

I'll admit, it kind of is easy. Its a lot of work, but not particularly difficult! and hahahaha! Thats quite a story! This car the other had a 2x4 bridging the hole in the floor so he could drive it, and a mat just to keep the road spray down. Talk about dangerous! LoL!

Nice quality work! Especially impressive considering it's done outdoors without an enclosed shop space, without help, and without high dollar equipment. For cutting out the old pans, I'd suggest getting a "sheet metal ripper" cutter for your air hammer as it's much faster than a sawzall and has almost no potential to accidentally start a fire like a plasma cutter. With all the pine needles and flammable debris around, I'd be very cautious about firing up that plasma! Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles 6 жыл бұрын
I never thought to use my chisel to do the cutting on this. I'll give it a try, might be easier to tackle from the underside as I have been.... but there won't be any dramatic sparks to put in my videos without the high dollar plasma cutter! :-D What fun is that to watch?
