In Australia in 1971, I bought my first beetle from Wollongong students for $50. It was firing on 2 cylinders only. On the way home to Oak Flats, the clutch cable broke. And the wife towed me back. When Realising the height it had to be lifted to remove the engine, that was the first thing I did, cut out fhat back panel, and made it easily replaceable, also, cut 2 holes behind the back seat to easily get to the top 2 bolts holding the enngine in.! Why they made it like that, has foxed me ever since, and replacing the clutch cable was an absolute night-mare.! But stiil had many more VW,s over the years, the fact that they use the engine in home-build aircraft, was why I bought the first one originally.!

Got the same parts ordered. Going to try it the same but with a drill press for sprocket hub then weld it .i think i can do it
