#Duel #Spielberg #1971
Revisiting the filming locations of Spielbergs first movie - DUEL.
99% of all the shots are in Santa Clarita and Acton, California on Soledad Canyon Road and the Sierra Highway.
David starts in Toluca Lake, CA - drives to downtown Los Angeles (presumably to the office) then out to Santa Clarita to see Forbes - so he doesn't lose the account.
His day does not go as planned.

Ìts a very gritty thriller in which the truck driver attempts to kill dave mann aka dennis weaver. He was driving across california but the trucker had a death wish. This film made steven spielberg a household name as a director.

I live within 15 miles of all of this (the Canyon Country area of Santa Clarita). There are areas around here that still have the small-town vibe of 40 years ago. Acton is one such town. The stone-faced restaurant is still there and is noted for its fine cuisine. There is an old motel about a mile down the road from it that is under the same ownership as the restaurant. Many of the locations still have that "left in the oven too long" look. This is a very interesting film.

This movie will forever be one of my favorite movies of all time. The suspense and the car chase is far better than anything I've seen in modern movies. Steven Spielberg and Dennis Weaver deserve huge applause for creating such a timeless classic. It's quite amazing how a movie with a simple plot like this can be made into such a fantastic thriller.

I disagree. Where do I begin... This movie involves no cinematic universe to speak of. The fate of the world and/or universe is never hanging in the balance. The truck never once transforms into a cybernetic organism. There isn't a a single attractive woman proving that she's as strong as anyone else - or even stronger. The sets are so real looking that they're dumb. No one has cool incomprehensible super powers that can only be bested by someone else's cool incomprehensible super power. Zero glowing things that may or may not explode. Zero establishing shots of the earth with some huge thing heading towards it. Absolutely no flying people. No one ever lands on the ground in a cool flex pose while the earth ripples under them. No energy beams of any type. None. Bore-ring...

Duel has been a true classic and I still remember being scared out of my mind as a 6 year old in 1971 watching this movie with my family. The suspense was non-stop and everything Spielberg involved was terrifying including the choice of truck to use for the film. For those that do not know, Steven Spielberg used the exact premise of Duel when filming Jaws. He felt the unknown was more terrifying than actually seeing what was coming... With that concept of not seeing the truck driver and only that menacing looking truck, he never showed the full shark in Jaws until the last 30 minutes of the movie making it even more terrifying and creating the first Summer blockbuster. Duel was the first of many to come. Pure genius...

As a kid of the 70’s I would scour the TV Guide for this move, and one other highway terror movie, Night Terror, in which Valery Harper is a housewife terrorized by a psycho killer. Both movies would often be played as the late, late, late movie and I would never miss either one! My parents certainly would not let me stay up that late to watch a scary movie, so I would set my alarm for 1am, sneak down to the den and sit 6 inches from the TV with the volume real low! The next day when I was too tired to go to school I would fake a stomach ache, stay home from school and watch The Price is Right and Let’s make a Deal while mom made me cinnamon toast! My parents were either very naive, or more likely just great parents who gave me a wonderful childhood. Rest in Peace Mom and Dad. 😘

The oft-featured Sierra Hwy was originally part of US 6, which ran from Boston to Los Angeles. It still exists in California between Bishop and the state line. It's a great little drive from Canyon Country (north of LA) out to the desert, where it runs into US 395. I've driven this road literally hundreds of times to visit my friends while I was in LA. I saw Duel when I was about 10 or 11 back in the 70's and it's remained one of my favourite films. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video! I hope to return someday and drive those same roads (and through THAT tunnel!) once again! Cheers from Australia.

This is so underrated. What a classic film and gem. Probably one of my favorites from this era. I always thought that the mystery behind the devilish driver of the truck adds so much to the film as much as the other aspects of intensity and suspense. Thanks for the video and shots about this location, then and now. As a Californian, I love that.

Such a classic iconic film that I first saw when I was a youngster and still watch it yet even at the age of 56, it’s fantastic that most of the places from the film haven’t changed much. I wonder if the car and truck wrecks are still at the bottom of that valley at the end of the film….

I too have been a long time fan of Spielberg's "DUEL" & all it's classic originalities, that have tried to be replicated, but never successfully duplicated in the film & motion picture industry. The video editing, laid out here in linear presentation & the extreme measures taken to capture the same visual routes from 1971, in comparison to "today's" 2023, is purely IMPECCABLE & GENIUS. However, working in the radio broadcast & voice-over industry for my entire professional life & career (1979 to 2019-retired) I feel producer "GP's" two or three, very short & brief voice-over inserts along the video timeline, could have been done in a less "casual" read, but done so with a more prepared script, using a pro-audio microphone; Electrovoice, Sennheiser, Neumann, Shure, etc, running through a voice processor outboard module; kin to the Symetrix 528E or the DBX 286S. That is just my "old school analog audio opinion" on the short audio, narrative inserts. Other than those little toodles, the video chronology produced here was WAY BEYOND, PAR EXCELLENT...!!! Film makers have neither the courage nor the expertise to craft a budget time-strict release of this calibre today.
