In this video I’ll tell you everything you need to know about Taylor’s & Company’s cartridge conversion cylinders for Remington, Ruger and Rogers & Spencer revolvers.
It will tell you how to use them safely.

I'm 75 yesterday. When I was a kid if one wanted to shoot an old percussion pistol you shot an old percussion shooter. An original Colt cost around $50. A Sharps about the same and we who wanted to shoot old guns shot them. They were made of iron. They shot fine. Today we buy Italian replicas which are much better guns and are made of steel. I shoot both old and new, but frankly I like shooting the newer replicas better. However there is a certain charm of making the old guns speak once again and I shoot a Navy Colt, a Pocket Navy Colt, and a Starr CA. Also a few Sharps rifles, a couple of trapdoors,, a 73 Winchester, a Parker or two, a Lefever and two old Lightenings, one pistol and one pump carbine. Fun.

Congratulations to your Birthday, sir, and many greetings from a black powder enthusiast from Hannover here in the north of germany. I wish you much fun shooting on the range / the outdoors. By the way, someday I really want to shoot a Sharps rifle, it's on my bucket list. Last summer I had the opportunity to shoot an original Spencer rifle, a thing I wanted to do since I saw the movie "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman. What a fascinating piece! But for everyday shooting I like the replicas more, when I shoot such an old gun I kinda have the feeling I'm wearing out a piece of history. I know, it's a bit stupid, but I can't help it. Have fun!

@@Semyon_Semyonych You Need to be in an Shooting club and you Need an Special Licence to buy blackpowder and you Need to reenew the Licence every 6 years.Only the shaprs is free without Licence weapons inventet bevore the year 1871 and they are single shooters without centralfire cartriges are free to buy.

I've had a .36 cal blackpowder revolver for several years (Uberti 1851 Navy with I think a 4 or 5 inch barrel). Works great. Shortly after I got it, I picked up a .38 special conversion cylinder for it from I believe Midway USA. I think it was made by Howell's, but it could have been Taylors. At any rate, the cylinder slipped right in, and I've been using handloaded mid-range wadcutter ammo in it completely successfully. About a year or two ago, I was in an antique shop and found a Colt .36 cal 1851 Navy style revolver with a longer barrel than my Uberti Sheriff. It was brand new and a beautiful gun with much better fit and finish than the Uberti. Got it home, took out the black powder cylinder, and guess what, the Howell .38 spl conversion cylinder slipped right in and shot like a charm. Very happy with the results in both cases. A lot of versatility for little money in both those guns. Oh, and one more thing, I find cleaning a gun after shooting smokeless powder rounds is a lot less hassle than cleaning one after shooting black powder rounds.

Great video Mike! I have a Pietta 1858 .44 cal. with a Kirst Konverter. It is designed as such to not having to remove the cylinder to load. Instead, it operates just like a 1873 peacemaker, flipping the side door and loading. The only thing I have to do is to have a peg long enough to push out the empty cases. As far as cartridges is concerned, I handload with Cowboy load #4 200 grain bullets that I buy from Missouri Bullet Company over 5.5 grains of Trailboss powder. Velocity is around 750 FPS with excellent accuracy within 35 feet. It is a joy to shoot and a huge crowd magnet needless to say.

I could watch them all day.. they are so informative the history and how the gun works made me really happy thank you.. im from ireland and we can't see these guns in the flesh you are so lucky to be able to hold them.. but I'm lucky I found your videos because I can get to see them now. My favourite is the Winchester repeater rifle. I've never held one or seen one physically but I enjoyed watching you explain its history and firing it thanks again..

Excellent video! I've been enjoying your rifle builds for a long time! I have owned my Taylor's cylinder for 3 or 4 years now and it's a fun addition to shooting my Pietta 1858 Remington. My gun did require a bit of fitting though. But it was a simple matter of relieving the bottom of the frame just a tiny bit with a file at the front of the frame.

I really like the Remington 1858, like how it looks, like "quick" change cylinders. I like all the old firearms, but I like the Remington the best from an esthetics stand point.

Absolutely wonderful video, super information. I will always love and prefer my cap and ball revolvers BUT I do have several Taylor's and Co conversion cylinders. 2 for my pair of Pietta 51 Navys and 2 for my pair of Uberti 61 Navys. In all 4 cases the cylinder dropped in, perfect fit, not a single issue. They work flawlessly! Probably doing a Remington conversion soon! I've had excellent luck getting HB ammo for cylinders from Buffalo Arms, great stuff. I do recommend getting a set of pins, ferrule and ferrule tool when you get a cylinder. Love carrying these when out on the property or hunting on my land.

Hey there Mike. First time viewer and new subscriber. It's interesting that these conversion cylinders are available. I happen to own 2 Pietta Texas Buffalo pistols, 2 Pietta new army revolvers, and I just recently purchased a Ruger new army revolver. I got chased out of an indoor gun range a few years back because of all the smoke I generated with my stainless Pietta Texas buffalo pistol. I'd just purchased it and wanted to get it sighted in so I took it to the range. One thing I discovered mighty quick is that a black powder pistol is strictly an outdoor pistol! LOL!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaaanyway, now that these conversion cylinders are available then it would be nice to take my black powder pistols back to the range and light em up again without making all the smoke. Many thanks for a very informative video.

Thanks for this video. I have a Ruger and it's good to know more about it. My wife found this one at a yard sale for $25 with a broken nipple. Otherwise it was flawless. I got a new nipple shipped in, and I just ordered a new conversion cylinder for it. I'm like a little kid at Christmas. 😁

Great video. The Remington is really the only cylinder that makes sense to me. Having to remove screws or wedges to get the cylinder out is more of a hassle than just loading powder and ball in my opinion. I just wish these cylinders weren't so darn expensive. The Remington cylinder cost more than I originally paid for the revolver. Still, it would definitely be fun to have. It makes for a nice conversation piece at the range.

I disagree with your rationalization about The Remington being the only sensible one. I find the Colts to be quite easy. Just push out the wedge with your thumb, pull off the barrel assembly, then cylinder and use the cylinder arbor to push out the empties. Reload and slide it back on, press in the wedge, done. I will admit to carrying a wooden crab mallet for a sticky wedge but seldom need it. From what I've seen, Mike made the Remmies look a bit easier than it really is, mainly the rammer doesn't like to stay in that ideal position and must be held in place to keep it from flopping down and locking the cylinder. Also replacing the cylinder can be a bit fiddly until you get a feel for it. The Ruger screw? It is just a 1/2 turn locking pin with no real tension, a coin or key ring type screwdriver will work, no need for a real and bulky screw driver. If I were lucky enough to own one, I would probably work out a thumb screw head type arrangement for it. Having to hold the rammer assembly together is a hassle but I think you can leave the rammer arm and plunger off altogether and still lock in the cylinder pin. Rogers and Dow? You might need a real screwdriver for that one. I've never handled one but still loading cartridges has got to be easier than loading loose powder, ball and caps, especially under any kind of pressure when the adrenalin is flowing and your fine motor skills have deserted you. Just my experience. Thanks

I participated in cowboy action shooting for many years. My pistols were a brace of Uberti Remington New Model Army revolvers with R&D conversion cylinders (which is what I think Taylor's are). I put several thousand rounds thru each, and I'm here to say it was a whole buncha fun! If you're going to shoot a lot, and assuming your pistola is a Uberti , my suggestion is to get the lightened hammer spring available for their 1875 Remington, if they're still available. It slips right in, and makes your thumb quite happy..... []

well, the cylinders may be a little pricey but they're NOT FFA regulated... so, you getcha a new gun w/o the Gov't crap involved ... my Dragoon was $400 and the conversion cylinder was $250 ...

An advantage of the Taylor 1858 .45 Colt conversion cylinder compared to other conversion cylinder manufacturers is that the Taylor .45 Colt conversion cylinder is 6-shot. Other manufactures only offer a 5-shot .45 Colt for the 1858 Remington. There can be a slight cartridge length issue for Colts using .45 Colt conversion cylinders. A .45 Colt cartridge shorter than the SAAMI 1.6" .45 Colt may be required. I always reload my .45 Colt to a length of 1.550" that fits in all my conversion cylinders.

I bought one for an Italian 1858 Remington. I love it. They are a bit pricey but it's the best thing you can do for your cap and ball. That are more accurate and cleaner. My was drop in fit with no clocking.

I have an Uberti Remmy with a Taylor conversion cylinder and I'm pleased as punch. I've always adored the long lines of BP revolvers. I have a Texas Dragoon as well. You can maximize any weapon platform with the proper application of knowledge, preparation, care and practice. You can defend yourself with 5 rounds of .45 LC. Fact. Great channel

I have an Uberti 1847 Walker, two Uberti “Rem” 1858s and tomorrow, my 1979 Stainless Steel Ruger Old Army arrives. A 44 year old .44 I plan to take a deer with it someday at 25-30 yards.

I bought one for the Remington April 9 2020. I bought the gun many years ago for less than $200 and quickly got sick of cleaning the black powder mess. Shoot 6 rounds, clean and re load for an hour. If I had ordered the ammo with the cylinder I could give a shooting report. Taylor's has very good service. The cylinder fits perfectly. All the local stores don't have the ammo on hand.
