The Dugan Automix System is well known in the audio community for it's seemless method of mixing multiple microphones together in a way that's both natural and precise. In the 1970's Dan innovated and patented numerous systems including the "Control Apparatus for Sound Reinforcement Systems", the "Dugan Speech System" and the "Dugan Gain Limiting System" making LIVE mixes of free speaking people possible in news and game show recordings and that's just the start. Even more amazing, it does it automatically. Quite literally, the Dugan Automix system makes mixing dozens of mics easy.

Totally excellent video! I’ve read all about the Dugan automixer for years but nothing beats hearing it from Dan the man himself. I really enjoyed hearing about the development of the algorithm.

I love this guy's approach of freely giving away his old inventions, but using it as an opportunity to publicize his new improved inventions. That's a very reasonable balance between sharing and monetizing his knowledge.

19:05 If Dan Dugan isn't an engineer, then I'm not even a human being. This really outclassed every other explanation of Dugans and auto-mixing in general I've found, including asking college professors who usually just said "don't bother. If you mix and place mics properly you don't need them."

I use two different mixers (Behringer XR18, and a Soundcraft Ui24R) that both feature built in Dugan Automix. It is a dream. I do an on location live panel discussion radio show from a noisy restaurant featuring a host with 6 or 7 panelists. Dugan Automix makes it so easy to get a clean quiet mix. I loved learning how and why it works so well.

I don't think Behringer and Soundcraft use Dugan. There are other automixers out there and sounds like both of those have a competitor integrated.

"Based on" isn't licensed by. Run a Google search and you'll find that it's not an officially licensed product and using Dan Dugan's name in their advertising is shady.

@Sound Speeds I find your comment here somewhat condescending. "Licensed by" does not describe or measure functionality. The OP said the behringer dugan style automixer *works*. Your contention appears to be that Behringer didn't adequately credit/compensate the original inventor - not that that it doesn't function following the dugan style approach. As I newbie, I just want to know if it *works* or not.

P.S. just googled it "Dugan’s original 1974 patent for the automixer (“Control Apparatus for Sound Reinforcement Systems”) expired in 1991 and has been in the public domain ever since." Licensing is not required or necessary for any technology where the patent expired 30+ years ago. Dan Dugan should be proud of his widespread impact in the sound industry! But this patent appears to have run its course.
