Ironic how people keep praising this game for being the "anti-Call of Duty" even though DNF has followed the same trends as many modern military shooters. And Half-Life 2, given the amount of platforming, physics puzzles, and valve puzzles there are.

Honestly, I just don't see how anybody would praise this. There is very little in terms of actual shooting, as the first few levels are based around cheap gimmicks or pointless minigames and the later levels are a tedious slog due to the monster truck using up gasoline like a fat guy chugging down Mountain Dew. I also like to point out how pointless the Hive level is in the game. As a joke, it's not funny (even for tasteless dark comedy) and as for shock value, it fails because Duke keeps spouting lousy one-liners that feel out-of-place and clashes with the overall tone of the game.

I actually enjoyed using the pistol. Getting headshots was the easiest and most satisfying way to kill the most common enemies. More effective than the shotgun at close range if you did it right and still very useful at long range because ammo was plentiful. I actually got the achievement for keeping the golden pistol throughout the whole game. It was almost always useful. Though it WAS a pain to manage only two weapon slots when the game kept requiring you to use a specific weapon, especially on the 360. Granted, my aim was probably unreasonably good because the unhealthy amount of time I'd spent on other shooters was still somewhat fresh. Once upon a time I could carry an entire team alone on foot on Bad Company 2 and win a 4v1 match on Hardcore mode on Modern Warfare 2, so this was an actual challenge. That's probably the only reason I didn't hate this game as much. I don't play shooters at all anymore.

thing that makes this game worse is that serious sam 3 came out months later, and it was a much better game that satisfied that urge for old fashioned shooters. then there was shadow warrior, wolfenstein doom and now shadow warrior 2. duke nukem forever is easily the worst out of the neo retro shooters that cropped up after it's release. if serious sam 3 came out first, the reception might have been even more laughable.

I'm really glad and quite relieved that you enjoy Doom as much as I do, when I told you to pick it up and try it I actually thought "I hope he does not hate it or he will be mega pissed at me for telling him to go and buy it". That was their excuse for having only two guns? I officially hate Gearbox now. What a bunch of assclowns. As a veteran of Duke games I can say that the original game is nothing like this. It's amazing to me with how much development hell this game went through, only to come out as mediocre at best. I wholeheartedly agree they should have scraped Forever and tried for a fresh new game from scratch with new controls and gameplay. I'm sure that would have been much better than what we got. But that would have required actual work and from what you said in the video, Gearbox are just lazy. Thank you for pointing out the platforming sucking, that was one of my main issues with the game. Oh my god Darklord, I hated the Octoking fight so friggen much!! That fight was stupid as shit, the fact that the Octobrains catch your rockets and throw them back with no cover only made it worse. That was the only boss battle that really gave me trouble. The Dam boss was quite annoying as well but not as bad as the damn Octoking.
@Darklordjadow17 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have deeply enjoyed Doom. I keep hearing that Wolfenstein: the New Order is along the same lines and full of retro goodness, but I have not tried it yet. May put it on my Christmas list. Yes, Gearbox apparently thinks console gamers are just that freakin' dumb. One commenter said they do the same thing in Borderlands. The only way Duke Nukem Forever was ever going to come out good was if they burned the whole thing to the ground and started over. I read on TV Tropes that one of the head honchos at Gearbox was a huge fan of Duke Nukem, so that may have contributed more to preserving 3D Realms' work than the laziness. But since Gearbox has become notorious for botching up Aliens: Colonial Marines in spectacular fashion laziness sounds much more plausible. The Octoking pissed me off so much! I had to replay that boss fight at least 7 times. I laughed the first time I heard that old guy's "Donkey-Punch" line, but after hearing it four times it stops being funny.
@ShaunTheCHB7 жыл бұрын
***** I can confirm that Wolfenstein: The New Order is pretty good. It's sequel The Old Blood is not too bad either. I have both games and have enjoyed them. Another I do recommend since you might not have played them is the Bioshock Collection. It's all three games complete with all the DLC. It's great for newcomers to the series and for veterans. I played Boarderlands once and I was not too impressed with it. It seemed very multiplayer based rather than single player. They did Aliens: Colonial Marines too? I did not know that. It would explain some things though. Yeah, I remember that bit, it gets quite annoying after a while. Especially when you are pissed off from dying in the fight. You want the old fool to shut up. I actually yelled curse words at my tv at one point during an Octoking encounter, I have not done that in years. I confess I had a great laugh with Duke's commentary everytime he picked up the poo. My favorite lines were "Why am I doing this?" & "What the fuck?" I also enjoyed drawing weird crap on the whiteboard while the soldier said "Great plan". So there were parts in the game I did have a chuckle at. That helped me get through the game and make it a bit less painful to play.

They also developed Aliens: Colonial Marines, oversaw the disastrous release of Battleborn, and pissed people off by pulling older rereleases of DN3D from Steam with the release of 20th anniversary Duke Nukem 3D. See, I can cherry pick as well. But seriously, Gearbox may have been strong in its early years, but a decade can change a company for better or worst. As it stands now Gearbox is incredibly hit-and-miss with their releases, with their Borderlands and Homeworld productions being their strongest IPs this decade.

Here's a little story that I like telling about this game: This game was hyped as hell; I saw some big ass cardboard promotions for it at my local Gamestop very soon before it released! And as far as I can remember, it went down to bargain bin price about a month later. Yeah, this game fell that flat. And keep in mind, older games like Star Wars Jedi Outcast cost about 20 dollars at my local used game shop. I think I saw Duke Nukem Forever priced about 3 to 6 dollars. I saw the older builds for the game, and I honestly think this would have been a better product if they kept the PS2 era version that got scrapped. As it stands, this game is so boring. It's like the Final Fantasy 13 of first person shooters, you know? I know some of y'all like 13, but in my opinion, it's so... meh. And that pretty much sums up how I feel about Duke Nukem Forever; so damn disinterested. Duke's found more success as a cameo in other games since then. Hell, he even had to infiltrate Grayson Hunt's game to stay relevant, if you know what I mean.

To be fair, shotguns were not designed to hit targets at point blank range. That is what bayonets are for. Or pistols. Shotguns are for hitting targets at medium range where the spread of the pellets makes it a lot easier to hit the target. Video games have this bad habit of making them super short ranged. I seem to recall Duke 3D actually got it right because they were OK at long range in that.
@Darklordjadow17 жыл бұрын

The hive level would have been better if you could rescue the women. Like, you can choose to mercy-kill them, or rescue them by blasting around the alien goo holding them down, get them back up, then give them a handgun and make it an escort mission where you try to get them out. They can even add an achievement for someone who gets all the girls home in normal or harder difficulties. Great review! I don't know why but when I see this game it reminds me other bad FPS game Soldier of Fortune: Payback. To be honest graphics looks very similar and even in 2007 Soldier of Fortune: Payback looked much worse than other games. About Duke Nukem Forever, this game looks really bad, most games from 2007 looks much better. And fact that game worked bad on consoles was caused because programmers were lazy and they bungled their work (most typical hack and slash games for PS3 and even PS2 works and looks much better than DNF for PC), I've seen that other games with better graphics worked much better, even infamous Crysis port for consoles.

Fuckin' Nuke Fukem Dornever. while this game have funny things here and there; most of the game is shit. I remember that trailer from 2001, when I saw it; I was hyped, I thought this game could have thrown major shit at what most shooters went to be (generic cinematographic shooters with not very good gameplay; shitty trends from level structure; boring enemy and weapon design all together). The more I learned about the game in around 2005 or something, the more I started to think, they threw things out again and make the game becoming shitty just like the other shooters I don't really enjoy or even dislike. Every time they threw some new info, they showed things that the game was just a sort of bad FPS museum and even the whole copying about game features went into something not very good and not well put together. In the end I ended up to get it for cheap, and I saw it from my own eyes. Even if I liked the fact they kept a few of the interactive environments that the original had, the rest is just the bad modern shooter it tried to be with a duke skin. Even the duke jokes aren't that funny because I was having a bad time. The stupid two weapon limit as stupid, even if we have ammo crates with infinite deposits here and there; the fact that the weapons were situational or just total shit made the game forcing the player to keep one of the very useful weapons that never lacks of ammo in one slot while the "fun and trivial" weapons such as the shrink ray were made with little ammo carry capacity and they aren't that useful overall. If people plays the original 3d or even one of its console ports, they will see a different game and a lot more awesome game. Personally I think duke nukem needs a new game that isn't plagued with the modern shooter crap. And saying this some modern shooter features aren't bad to me, but it just needs to have the right ones. Doom 2016, shadow warrior and the wolfenstein reboot were excellent and they have modern features within them. I also hate the idea that game publishers and developers thinks that console gamers are stupid, they are people just like any others, they can handle maze levels, key cards and many weapons at once. If people wants to play games with more realism, fine there is games for you, but if people wants their games to be over the top, just let that happen instead of forcing the genre to a sort of standardization...

Ummmm. DNF started development in the 90's by the company 3D Realms. 3D Realms, instead of just trying to make a great game, tried to match and top every shooter as it hit the market, not understanding that they will never do that, because new shooters will always be released. They were eventually sued for not releasing the game in a decade, and so the license shifted to Gearbox, who just stitched together every half-finished level and called it a day. BTW, this game was released in 2011, not 2009.

I know you don't like Halo for screwing up the first person shooter genre (I think so too), but could you review Halo CE and give full details on how it ruined the genre and why you don't like it?

The ending is a play on Call of Duty's MW ending. Well not ending but the middle part of the game..... Yah what were they thinking?
@Darklordjadow17 жыл бұрын
See; I did not know that because I've never played Modern Warfare or ever watched videos about it. Very dumb way to end the game; on a one-note joke a bunch of people probably didn't even get.
@gustavusadolphus43447 жыл бұрын
Yah it was dumb. It was a cutscene where character you played as got killed in a nuclear bombing and it was at the mid of the game. So I don't get why they did that. Hell the ending of MW was pretty bad ass. MW in the whole was a bad ass game. Shame they thought just making the same game over and over was a good idea....
@Darklordjadow17 жыл бұрын
Rodan Lesh Exactly; MW created a genre that's had a stranglehold over the industry for years. Hopefully Doom means we're breaking that hold.

You've never played a Duke Nukem game, why would you start with one of the worst? (IMO there are a couple of worse ones then this) I think the worst part of this game is the two weapon limit. Four I could deal with, three maybe but two is just not enough for this kind of shooter. Edit: Was the four weapon mode ever added to the console version? Edit 2: And the second worse thing they did was the mutilation they inflicted on Duke's poor Pistol. The Duke Nukem 3D Pistol was a thing of beauty and wonder. Sure if I had the choice I would whip out the Ripper Cannon or the Shotgun instead in most cased but the Pistol in Duke 3D was my favorite 90s FPS starting Pistol and among my top 3 favorite FPS starting guns of that period. The Pistol in Forever is nothing but a ruined shell of what was. (For anyone wondering the Duke 3D Pistol holds 12 rounds per magazine and fires at full-auto so its a Machine Pistol for all intents and purposes.)

"Gearbox should have just started the entire game over and built one dedicated experience from the ground up..." That's easy for you to say, but put yourself in Gearbox's shoes. 3D Realms just got sued out the ass, and in the fire you picked up a mostly finished game that has a ton of hype behind it for what was likely dirt cheap compared to the development costs. Gearbox wasn't making a bright-eyed attempt to preserve a legacy, it perceived DN:F as a tool to be used to make a profit off of someone else's work. I'm not defending that practice, but when a big company gets a golden opportunity like that they'd be fucking insane not to take it.
@neoman2891516 жыл бұрын
You're speaking with the benefit of hindsight mate. Imagine if the same happened for Half Life 3, imagine if Valve magically went under and sold what they had completed of Half Life 3 for a couple grand or whatever. Now imagine you bought those scraps. Your options are either 1: Cobble together a finished product out of those scraps in a weekend and sell them claiming it's the official release and hyping everyone up, making as much profit as possible off of something most sane people stopped caring about or 2: Scrap everything and rebuild the entire game from the ground up with new technology and try selling a game that the market abandoned a decade ago If your answer is 2, then for your own sake, never get into business.
@gvn5986 жыл бұрын
Victor Viridian I know this is late, but anyways this approach to business is extremely shortsighted and honestly a dangerous way for any company to run. So you take path 1 and get easy quick money. Sweet free payday! But now your company's reputation is in the shiter and you have to find a way to repair it or risk the community writing you off, and rightfully so. If you scrap the game and rebuild it, relaunching the games marketing in a good window, then you get to appear as the heroes that rescued a long forgotten favorite and have a new franchise with legs under it to make you revenue and increase your popularity for years to come

@@neoman289151 Well, they didn't have to build the entire game from ground up. I mean they had a finished game engine, a level editor and even characters with animations. All they should have done was to build new levels with the technology they bought, having the popular Duke Forever trailer from 2001 in mind. And I sure the game would have been received A LOT BETTER. Instead Gearbox literally sawed together a beta or maybe even alpha test version of this game and released it as a finished product, and I personally still had a lot of fun with it, but can't help imagine how much better it could have turned out if they actually took just a little time to make something...

Honestly, I feel like this game had the same fate as The Thief and The Cobbler, both of them were in development hell because their creators wanted to create the greatest thing in the world and were trying to make it THE MASTERPIECE, but went over their heads and sabotaged the project overall, but at least Richard Williams cared about the film, whereas 3D Realms only cared about money and trying literally ruining their own IP, and really, Duke Nukem is the king of development hell, and really, it's sad that a game that could've been good, ended up being absolute garbage, but I never played it, so I don't know how bad it is, but I have seen some reviews of this travesty enough to know how bad it is.

Uh.. Gearbox made the Half-Life expansions, Brothers in Arms, Halo: CE, the shitshow that was Aliens: Colonial Marines... dunno what rock you've lived under, maybe because some of these weren't on consoles? They did make the one console exclusive Half-Life game.
@Darklordjadow15 жыл бұрын
Congratulations; you've completely missed the point of my statement. Gearbox made Borderlands and some other good stuff a long time ago, but its output since Borderlands has been a conga-line of mediocrity and fuck-ups.

Doom 2016? nice game ,yes... but it was "Trial and error" it could failed also as DNF.... Remember Doom 3? it wasn´t that good id software made RAGE...also not so bad game that "nobody" played i´m just sorry because we will never get to play this duke kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iqqcdZWBltLJgoE.html and yes Considering all the "haters" & game Market today we will probably have a real hard time getting our hands on Half Life 3 any time soon

Personally, I find the game as a whole pretty boring. Setting aside the shock "humor" and two-weapon limit, the game itself has some really lousy pacing. I've played both the 360 and PC versions, so I can try approaching it with an open mind. And I still didn't like it all that much. I mean, you can only go so far with fetch quests and dirty jokes before it gets boring. And before you @ me, the RC car, platforming, and valve puzzles suck because they don't mesh well with the FPS gameplay and are clunky to a fault. It also doesn't help that the shotgun and chaingun are weak and inaccurate, despite having tons of ammo for those weapons. And as for the Hive level, to put it bluntly, it's an unnecessary level that doesn't fit with the overall tone. I'd say that The Doctor That Cloned Me DLC is a slight improvement but that's pretty hollow praise given that DNF is still a crappy game.

here's an idea for developers, a remaster of the original duke nukem 3D, no updates to ANYTHING except the graphics, just make the exact game, but with new graphics, it may sound kinda lazy, but at least it'd be better then this whatever the hell it is
