The twist is even worse if you are have played HL2. When Michael is supposed to distract the Combine, Freeman is basically stuck in limbo due to a teleportation accident for another week. So... G-Man's distration does nothing at all.

You know... I personally think that HDTF could've worked better as a comedic "whodunnit" story set before the events of HL2. Picture this: Right off the bat, we're told that Mitchell is Adrian Shepard's brother. _Then,_ during the prologue, we learn that Mitchell arrived in Black Mesa around the same time as his brother (during the second half of the main game), and like his brother, he's knocked out via helicopter crash. As he wakes up, it's when a Black-ops unit is trying to kill him, and Gordon Freeman has already left Earth for Xen at this point. After getting into the facility, Mitchell finds out that Freeman has left, his brother has gone missing (At least to him, we know that his brother is fighting the Race-X in Opposing Force), the area has been completely infested, his squad has been slaughtered and then, making matters worse, He encounters an HEV-clad maniac with a revolver who now proceeds to cripple his leg and knock him out. Cut to the 7-Hour war and Mitchell wakes up, now an amputee with a prosthetic leg, and begins an impromptu Noir-style investigation into the slaughter at Black Mesa, and just _who_ was that HEV-clad Psycho... Only to find out that both the slaughter and the psycho have much more in common than he thinks. It seems dark, but most of the comedy comes from the fact that THIS version uses a Rashomon-style for the flashbacks to what happened at Black Mesa, with each suspect Mitch encounters having a different, more bizarre POV from Mitch's, I.E. One where Gordon is a hammy, moustache twirling villain, one where Gina and Collette (from Decay) are the culprits and inadvertently kill the squad on their way to save Gordon, one where Mitch's squad was pinned down by a GIANT CUDDLY TEDDY BEAR, etc.

the worst part of this, coming from someone who works on another half life fan game (project borealis) HDTF makes other fan games, not just half life ones, but any look so much worse than they should be. the amount of reputation that's been damaged though to half life fangames is just the cherry ontop of HDTf. what's already a uphill battle since fangames are very, very hard to make with a quality similar to the official games offer. but with HDTF, that uphill battle became a climb up a mountain while hauling a lead weight. this game does so much damage to everything associated with it. franchise. fan games, community, developers, etc....

Random gamer: No game could possibly have a protagonist more cold, hateful, joy-bereft, dour, and rage fueled than Kratos, Cloud Strife, Velvet Crowe, and Shadow the Hedgehog combined! Hunt Down the Freeman: Hold my Beer.

The reason snipers can't be killed with your guns is because in original HL2, snipers are scripted NPC that hide inside holes and windows and the only way to kill them is throwing grenade into their hiding place. The dev literally put NPCs on the map without real understanding of how they are programmed.

"Guys, we found a crowbar on our ship... 23 years after Gordon Freeman has last been seen... HE MUST BE HERE SOMEWHERE."

"He's Cursed!" Yeah, it's not like you're in the middle of a war with a massively, massively overwhelming foe that managed to take over the entire planet Earth in 7 hours, it's this guy's fault! He's a big poo poo head! God I hate that line. The writing is so bad.

The bit with the crowbar is stupid. Out-of-Universe, WE associate the crowbar as Gordon Freeman's iconic weapon, but in-universe? A close friend will make a joke about Gordon being handy with a crowbar. There is no reason a crowbar being on the ship should hint at Gordon Freeman being near!

I suppose this franchise's lifespan really _does_ encompass a half-life. What a shame. (Also your overlaying edgy music over all of Mitchell's dialogue is subtle and utterly hilarious. Great job on that.)

Actually, the guns in CoD have decent enough strength, it's just that the gun sounds make them seem weak. That and they weren't used for mutations with more health than a typical looter shooter miniboss. And I just realized that I'm one of the few people that plays Call of Duty for the single-player.

There are some projects that are trying to turn the Episode 3 script that the writer, Mark Laidlaw leaked into a full game, this game is not going to be the last we see of Half-Life. Let's hope those games will be better that this bullcrab.

I don't know about anyone else, but just watching the cutscenes makes me want to throw my computer out the window. I think about all the mods that are for free and do more with half life than this shit streak ever could and I just shake my head.

One way the game keeps on crashing is that the game's size is 60 GB, with uncompressed 4K textures, high polygon models, and uncompressed cutscenes taking up most of the disk space, which results in the game crashing a lot. It haves constant FPS drops or make the loading time go up to 1-2 minutes. Today's games have 4K texture packs; but there free optional downloads, as 4K textures tend to take up a significant amount of space. HDTF has implanted a load of 4K textures by design. How pathetic is it that no matter how much 4K textures where used; the game's graphics still looks like a late PS2 game that came out in 2007

I've checked some other reviews (Pyrocynical and Tehsnakerer), and i can provide you some additional infos: 1) There was supposed to be a cutscene before you jumped straight to the boat. However, for some reasons, it didn't work. 2) Regarding one of the map being stolen... You aren't exactly wrong, since one of the maps is City 17. This also includes Ravenhold. 3) There's one level where it makes you wait, which is when you give an offer to Boris. 4) You remember the save feature? For some reason, saving or going on the next level with the motocycle crashes the game and corrupts the save. 5) The "doom fortress" happens to be Nova Prospekt, because when Mitchell enters the room with the teleporter, Gordon and Alyx teleported already. 6) The plan that G-Man went up with isn't exactly bad, but it got executed on the worst timing, since Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance were stuck on lost space, due to the fact that Nova Prospekt's teleporter was malfunctioning. 7) You remember the Combine Snipers in the alaska level? In HL2, you could kill them if you threw a grenade or fired a rocket on the window they were. Also, one of them happens to be misplaced, so that it could hit you from the ground. 8) The cutscene that triggers when you fail the final level, is basically a bizarre moment: Mitchell witnessing many Gordon Freeman (btw, the only time he shows), and then finds Adrian Shepard, his "brother".

As much as it pains me to say, Valve needs to sell the Half-Life IP to someone willing to do something with it. The fact that a broken piece of coding nightmare like this was so heavily wanted before release proves that. For good or bad, at least Duke Nukem forever was released. Yeah it was shit, but it came out.

2 years later and Valve released Half Life: Alyx, a game that's also set between Half Life and Half Life 2, so I think it was Valve's way of apologizing for allowing Hunt Down the Freeman to exist.

Several years later and not only has the “game” barely been updated but also some new interesting events have resulted. In particular, a new OFFICIAL Half Life game coming out, albeit a VR title, Half Life Alyx. That said there was an interesting result HDTF had on Half Life Alyx. According to Tyler McVicker, they were having trouble with the story of the game at first, having to do several rewrites, and when HDTF came out, it kinda influenced Valve on one of their rewrites to basically pretty much all but outright say HDTF couldn’t and wouldn’t have happened. I don’t know if I should spoil Half Life Alyx here, especially in regards to how it’d outright eliminate HDTF, but I thought I’d share this tidbit. If you’re interested in learning more, I could point out a few sources and such.

I wonder if there was supposed to be a level where you team up with John Freeman after he beats up Gordon Freeeman, who was possed by a headcrab- of course, and fight off the combines in a tower on top of the Sun before they blow the world to smitherooms. I would also bet that that level would have a scene of Gordon talking about how he saved Dallas by pushing the bad guy's hq into the ocean, through portals, so that he can avenge his slain Co-orker and retrieve the stolen radoactive isotope that decays in quarter-life, all while dying from his injuries (for maximum edginess). Seriously, squirrelking and Peter Chimera wrote better stories than this, and they were supposed to be bad.

Both parts were so good. I was waiting for you to bust a cap in this shit lmao. I laughed super hard when the MC said: You fucked up my face. That's the greatest line in a video game of all time. Nothing will ever be as good as that, so we all may as well pack up and go home.

in all honesty, I liked the idea for the story: I enjoy a bleak story once in a while...but like you said, it was badly balanced, like the gameplay, the voice acting, the challenge, the maps, etc... I would have liked to see this fanfiction executed better, for it could have been "decent". As a fanfiction, of course.

This has to be one of the worst games you've ever covered on The Dark Side of Steam. If it were me reviewing the game, I would automatically put it at the top of that list for dragging Half-Life's dead body through the mud.

I think the reason why Sniper Guy's delivery is so low key when he's getting shot at point blank range is because his voice actor didn't want to disturb or alarm his neighbors as he recorded his lines.

One thing I'm gonna give this game props for:doing to Gordon what the new Doom games did to Doomguy,by making him out to be a total badass. Sure,they may have accidently made Mitchell look like a total idiot,but when you get your Protagonist and his army to team up with the villains and their intergalactic empire to hunt down a theoretical physicist,you know this isn't someone you wanna mess with.

Half Life: Alyx basically gave the middle finger to this game

Adam attacking Mitchell clearly wasn’t self-defense. He could’ve shot him in the head with one of the many available guns but instead he chose to slowly take his time and painfully kill him with a crowbar.

Excellent and comprehensive two-part review. This game is a steaming hot pile of Taun-Taun guano, much like Steam itself. The developers are either idiots, assholes, or both (take your pick). The people that worked on it are all ashamed by their involvement (except Keemstar who gets off to hearing his voice, I’m pretty sure). Everything that could be stacked against this game was from the start, including the official death of HL3. HDtF has NO reason to exist except to remind us that even terrible fan fictions are able to be sold as professional products when they should be relegated to DeviantArt. As a Source Filmmaker project that was only an hour or so AND FREE, it would be okay. Nothing special, just merely bad and forgettable. But no, it had to be made into a game just to say “Fuck you, give me money!”

A marine is in Black Mesa, and after a brief fight with shit, he gets ko’d or the shit kicked out of him by Gordon Freeman (not sadistically beaten) now, fastforward 20 years, said marine is surviving alone in the wilderness and stewing over all of the people killed in Black Mesa, amd convinces himself that killing Gordon Freeman would avenge them all. From there you would make a more complex story than this bullshit.

I was friends with someone who designed some of the maps for HDTF, however there's obvious cases of the development team being entirely mismanaged as I've seen what this chap can do when it comes to map design, if anyone has seen or played any of the Resident Evil custom campaigns or even the latest campaign they made Cambalache for L4D2 will note how beautiful the maps look, there's clearly passion in this chap's work and that even goes as far to the BETA TESTERS the chap has for their maps while they are in development, I've even helped out from time to time with some bug testing after the maps became public, there were times where specials like Smokers would spawn outside of the map but still be able to attack you, I would make sure to bring that to their attention so it could be fixed in a later patch. Roku's campaigns are vastly superior to this dumpster fire just on the account that Roku has a team of BETA TESTERS for them during the development phase, something HDTF clearly didn't have and was pushed out the door like the head of the team was running some AAA company like EA!

The snow level of this game reminds me of the Japan level in Hitman 2 where you have to navigate across a snowy wilderness getting constantly one-shot by snipers with 100% accuracy. Fuck it pissed me off. I yelled almost as loudly as you do.
