Many who watch this will not remember… But in 1988…our Kentucky Wildcat Basketball program was nearly KILLED by the NCAA for violations that, today, would get a “hand slap” by that weak body. We were left for dead as most of our players abandoned our program except for four Kentucky home boys… Rick Pitino took the pieces of our program and served the years of restrictions placed on us… while teaching our Kentucky kids how to play a phenomenal up-tempo-pressure style not yet seen in the NCAA. Kentucky fans watched each year as Jamal Mashburn joined the team and we kept getting better and better …. THIS was the year we were finally off probation and released into the national spotlight! Duke was king and crowned the NCAA champion in all the national pundits minds before this tournament or game was ever played. When Kentucky finally crossed paths with Duke in the final 8…. it seemed like nobody in the nation had any respect for us… nor truly KNEW what our style of basketball was all about! You watch the first few minutes of this game, and the two HUGE runs our CATS went on to climb back from deficits, and you will see how Pitino’s style was so effective and hard to prepare for and told the nation… Kentucky Basketball is BACK… get used to it! Best Basketball game I ever saw played and hats off to both teams and coaches!

Some key takeaways as a neutral observer. Kentucky seemed to be on the wrong end a lot of dubious reach in foul calls. Hurley made clutch three after clutch three. Grant Hill had to make the perfect pass for that last-second play to work and he did. He threw it more than 3/4 the length of the court high enough so that it could not be intercepted but just within Laettner's reach. Pitino's choice to play 5 on 4 defense and not put anyone in front of Hill was one of the worst decisions he ever made.

Not true. Pitino stayed on the court for nearly a minute, which can feel like an hour when you'v lost a game with this kind of a gut punch bad beat. What was he supposed to do? Linger there and soak it all in? The court belongs to the winners. Did Mike K. hang around and swap hugs with every Lehigh player when they upset Duke in the tournament? Pitino ceded the court to the victors, and walked away very calmly.

BUT - a better story is that Kentucky senior class known as “The Unforgettables”: John Pelphrey, Sean Woods, Deron Feldhaus and Richie Farmer. ... which did have it's own documentary (just not One Shining Moment) --- narrated by Ashley Judd ( great commit ) all 4 have their jerseys retired and hanging in Rupp Arena - a decision by AD CM Newton - attesting to their amazing resurrection of Kentucky basketball ... a triumph of their love of the school.

Watched it live at my Aunts house as a 16yr old DIE HARD U.K. fan born and raised in Kentucky when Laettner hit the shot I kicked at the T.V. and when out in my Aunts front yard pulled my shirt over my head (because all my friends and family were over there and I didn't want em 2c) and cried. Mainly because Laettner should have not even been in the game after what he done to Woods

College Basketball was so fun to watch back then. Now it’s so hard to watch. The games are as fun to watch either.

Lattener not missing a shot the entire game makes it more incredible that the Kentucky team basically left him alone at the end!!!

I don't know if this is the greatest college basketball game ever played? I haven't seen them all. But it's the greatest college basketball game I ever saw played! Boy, could the legendary voice of Kentucky Wildcat basketball, the late, great Cawood Ledford, have had a more incredible game to end his 39 seasons as the voice of Kentucky Wildcat basketball with. Truly a heavy weight fight of epic proportions where both fighters refused to quit and neither side's corner man was about the throw the towel. Fair to say, at least in my opinion, both teams gave back just as good as they got the entire game. One of the few times I can ever remember a Duke vs. Kentucky game ending with both teams leaving the floor with a whole lot of respect for one another.

Last great year of Ky basketball where they played as a team. Especially considering most of the players would've never played at UK if they hadn't been placed on probation.

And a week later, referee Ted Valentine would make sure that Duke beat Indiana. IU's 3 best players fouled out. Ted hated Bob Knight and years later talked about how he was proud to be a part of why Knight never got his 4th ring. Just watch the 2nd half of the game...it's obvious. Sad but true.

I don't think Duke would be getting nearly as much criticism had the referee given Greg Anthony the three point play to ice the game in '91 and tossed Laettner in this game in '92 Then again this was the first of many, there was the infamous game against Maryland in 2001, the Baylor game in 2010, and the out of bounds call against Wisconsin in 2015

Rules are the clock starts when it touches a player which means with 2.1 seconds left Laettner touch the ball jumping up to get it but time didn't start until he came down with the ball.
