I know 1983 was a long time ago, but the last-second dunk by NC State's Lorenzo Charles off the Derrick Whittenburg air ball to beat the stacked (Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Michael Young) Houston Cougars squad is the essence of March Madness in a single play. Despite not being a fan of either team, I jumped off my couch and screamed with joy over the beauty I had just witnessed.

@stonecoldku4161Ай бұрын
There is an argument to be made that Mario Chalmers' shot in the 2008 National Championship is the most important clutch shot in NCAA Tournament history. 7:02 1) It happened it the championship game, so that makes it automatically more important than all other clutch shots that happened in earlier rounds of the tournament. 2) Two other shots that happened in the championship game were Jenkins shot to win against UNC and Charles dunk of the airball to lift NC State over Houston. Those were game winners, but in both cases the games were tied when those shots went in. Had Jenkins missed or Charles missed those games go into overtime. If Chalmers misses his shot the game is over and Memphis wins the title. 3) It was found out a few months later that Memphis had an ineligible player on its team and had to vacate all their wins from that season. Had they won the title they would've had to vacate that as well. Not only did Chalmers' shot prevent Kansas from losing by sending the game into overtime, but it also prevented there from being no champion whatsoever as the championship does not go to the runner up. There just would've been no champion for that season, making the season kind of pointless. This is just an opinion however and if you have a different one it's fine.
@GeoAce777Ай бұрын
I saw Chalmer's, Laettner's, Edney's and many others live. My favorite two game winners/buzzer beaters in my known world are Bryce Drew over Ole Miss and Clayton Custer over Tennessee. Mid-majors winning will ALWAYS have more meaning for me (haves vs have nots).

The refs won that game for Kansas, not Chalmers. Proper officiating would've resulted in a 20+ point win for Memphis. Most athletic college team of all-time.
@stonecoldku4161Ай бұрын
@@instig8torConsidering that Kansas and Memphis were pretty much dead even in a lot of statistical categories for the season: Points Per Game: KU: 80.7 Memphis 80.2 Opponents Points Per Game: KU: 61.3 Memphis: 61.6 Rebounds Per Game: KU 38.7 Memphis 40.8 Blocks Per Game: KU 6.0 Memphis 6.2 Kansas had only 3 losses and Memphis ended with 2 losses and considering the Big 12 was a much tougher conference, than Conference USA was back in 2008, I don't think that Memphis was that much more athletic or talented than Kansas' team was.

Buzzer beaters are all good and dandy but the greatest March Madness was 1997 when Arizona took down THREE number 1 seeds to win it all. With the likes of Mike Bibby, Miles Simon, and the great Jason Terry, this team had the God's on their side. These 3 teams they beat weren't just 1-seeds, they were three of the most storied names in basketball: NORTH CAROLINA with Vince Carter. KENTUCKY with Ron Mercer. KANSAS with Paul Pierce. Now THAT'S a most memorable moment of all time. Buzzer beaters happen all the time... this doesn't.

fun fact- when Loyola went to the final four they won their first three games by a combined total of 4 points edit: the proof that those weren't just lucky games is that they won their 4th game by 16, and when they lost to Michigan, I remember actually crying after this (I was like 8 years old) they were leading the whole game, (they were up by 7 at half) and ended up losing by about 10, but they were leading against a 3 seed for the whole game.
