In this video, I take you to one of England's most impressive castles. Bamburgh, on the north east coast of Northumberland, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria. Now in the ownership of the Armstrong family, its open to the public and is most definitely worth a visit. For this video, I'll be telling you about the ghosts that are said to haunt the castle, such as Green Jane, Dr John Sharp and the Pink Lady.

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place.

I’m descended from the Forster family who lived at Bamburgh. Sir Thomas Forster b. 1471 at Bamburgh, was my 16th great grandfather. Love Bamburgh. I have also found I am descended from the Greys of Chillingham and the Neville’s of Raby among others. Have been researching my family tree for 20 years now.

Me too, i found it fascinating that 40 generations ago (800 years) equals one trillion grandparents. Mathematically, of course, many of those are repeating. In other words, if you have any English relatives, then you're related to practically anyone whoever lived in that castle, as well as.... every other castle in the UK, possibly Charlemagne's empire too. A stranger is just a relative who you haven't met yet.

Nowadays the castle looks impressive at night because it’s well lit by all the lights and lamps around, but I bet in the times of old where there was no electricity the castle at night was imposing, ominous and eerie more than anything.

Perhaps the most beautiful video you have done, Bamburgh Castle is a place many long to visit .. myself included .. And you are so correct in stating the castle is illuminated beautifully at night .. These stories you tell of the ghosts found hear are heartbreaking and incredibly sad .. To me the one that will stay with me forever ., is the tale you tell of the schoolchildren happily walking hand in hand along the beach .. and the little girl who looked behind her to see the hand holding hers was ., unattached to anyone .. This made me cry .. for the poor lonely soul trapped there .. who only wanted to hold someone's hand .. 😭🖤⚘ Thank you for these stories .. they are mesmerizing ⚘ Jen999💜💙

I love a good ghost story and didn't know Bamburgh Castle had one. I'm an American and my last name is Bambrough. Even though the original castle was destroyed and the new one sold to another family, it still means a lot to me because of my ancestry. It's my biggest dream to visit there some day.

That was fantastic thank you. When I was ten and in the corridor with the tapestries on the wall I was adamant I felt a hand squeeze my upper arm. I was told it was the Pink Lady choosing her new man. At ten this felt more a hindrance than romantic. My spooky story did got played on the Clinton Baptiste Paranormal Podcast but he just took the piss out of me 😂 Anyway, keep up the great work, looking forward to more.

@@TheJollyReiver Thank you for this video, being a Northumbrian & proud of it, i love anything from our county. Id just like to add that i often go to a very old castle which in is semi ruins but has a marvellous atmosphere & not widely known about & its Edlingham Castle near Rothbury. The first time i visted here in 2006, i sat in one of window bays & gained a strong impression of the name Margaret & could perceive the lowing of cattle! It was perfectly empty & on a sunny afternoon. Im an empath & pick up on residual energy of past spirits ( im not a fortune teller nor do i Do ghost " thingies" its just something i have always done & feel privileged to be able to pick up such phenomena) Anyway a few weeks later my then boyfriend & i were near the castle one night so detoured to see it in darkness It seemed alive to me with spirits As we wandered about, me being near the Barbican i felt an unknown sensation of someone "Going through" me & the name Francis ( male) Later from the one remaining tower we both witnessed a tall person holding a toddler, both were white figures & both just faded away. We also saw some small person a child or very small adult jumping from pile to pile of rubble & stone blocks, this figure moved very fast! It should have been scary but our experiences there have never held any fear at all. Later on my boyfriend looked up Edlingham & found it once housed a lady called Margaret !!! She kept livestock within the castle & slept with her cattle for warmth! I was really surprised to read this as it was worth noting & my impression had been very clear! No mention of a Francis nor of the white person with child & the jumping about small spirit. However one thing did stand out to me & it was this... I felt resident spirits from a very long past were unhappy about some living people who had used the place in the past ( got the late 1970s) who had conjured up some negative energies & had not returned them back where they came from The so called satanists became frightened & had run off before returning these negative entities The long gone spirits who'd had affiliation to the castle & cared for it, didnt like these bad " interloper" entities & had kept them down & in check but their once happy " existance" in spirit at the castle was disturbed & they asked for help. Im no exorcist or spiritual cleanser so i was unable to do anything for them & have since felt sad to have not helped them Im sure a priest or church person could help, but im not a church goer so...? One thing i do know is that of the buildings still remaining of Edlingham is the Solarium, Tower & winding staircase. When the made the Kevin Costner & Alan Rickman film " Robin Prince of Thieves" they shot the scene where Robin returns home from the Crusades & finds his dying father in his castle ruins Well that scene was shot at Edlingham in the Solarium! Its worth a visit, there are no fees & parking is free & its not crawling with tourists I love Edlingham, dont know why, I just do, despite unwanted spirits! Thanks for your vids 🇬🇧👧

Visited here when I was about 15, some of the people I was with (of a similar age) were actually quite scared at the prospect of being in a haunted castle!

Thank you for sharing such beautiful tales. I am a great fan of ghost tales and I'm particularly interested in tales from old England. I'm from India and so share a strong connection to old British tales.❤
