James Best - a.k.a. "Sheriff Roscoe P. Coletrane" is in my opinion, very underrated as an actor. He is most well known for playing Roscoe as a bumbling idiot, which he did very well. In this touching scene from "Ghost of the General Lee" James Best shows his range as an actor, as he tells Uncle Jesse of the Duke Boys' death.

Man just the way he delivered Rosco's line about Bo and Luke's "death" is the most gut wrenching thing, it's when he says "They didn't come up" and Uncle Jesse's expression changes from his usual smiling to a "what" face like he'd just gotten hit by a bomb. You can tell the pain in his voice because he didn't want to break it to him and it killed Rosco on the inside to have to say those words. It's even more so when Jesse goes over to the table and the tears come streaming down his face, then Rosco comes over to console him and it's clear to see that he was fighting back from breaking down as well when talking about his car chases with them and how all of them enjoyed it. You really think they are gone for a second even when it's clear they aren't. What a gripping scene.

Being in law enforcement that has to be the hardest part of the job you have to do. Is to notify that a family member passed away in a car accident. And for sheriff roscoe knowing the family on personal level would even harder. Fortunately bo and Luke did not die.
@justinmiddleton8818
@justinmiddleton8818 7 ай бұрын
@johnsquire That's what really hits about this scene, and it says something about Rosco's character as an officer of the law, because even if his character is oft portrayed as a bumbling man child who is incompetent much of the time at his job (at least the later seasons, in S1 especially the early episodes it was a different story) but this was such a real moment. Best really nailed the emotion and the feeling of having to deliver that tragic news. Thankfully no, at least we find out the boys were very much not dead. Though this scene very much gave the appearance of such.

@@justinmiddleton8818 I think Rosco liked Bo and Luke and liked chasing them but he was also an officer of the law as you pointed and he had to do his job.Like for example when Boss Hogg was accused of sabotaging Uncle Jesse's car when they raced against each other Rosco did his job and arrested Boss.So there might be lines Rosco wouldn't cross and one of them is murder

Didn't notice the instant tear from Denver Pyle when he was staring off. The tremor in James Best's voice. Perfect acting. One of the all-time underrated true acting casts. The plots were sometimes ridiculous and corny, but the acting was always first rate.

Yes, the actors were often better than the scripts they were given. That's ultimately what made the show work. IMO, the best episodes were the first 5 that were filmed in Georgia.

no not these days. Hollyweird just doesn't get it. They tried to make a movie of it, and bungled that all up. They did the same with all the old tv shows they try to make movies of these days. Who ever said Wil Ferrell is funny? He's just weird and stupid, not funny, neither is Ben Stiller, tho with his parentage you'd think he would be. actually he'd be a better dramatic actor, and the few times he's gotten a bit of solid drama to do, he's done it well, but comedy, he just doesn't have it. Not as the funny man, maybe a decent straight man. Now, Will Smith is hilarious. I wish he'd do more movies and not straight drama tho he handles that well too. Why is it those tht are good at comedy usually shine in dramatic roles, while well known dramatic actors can't usually do comedy for ... anything. They ruined starsky and hutch the movie trying to be straight comedy. was junk.

I remember watching this the first time and, even though I knew Bo and Luke were alive I still cried because I felt the pain Uncle Jesse must've went through hearing those words he hoped never to hear from Rosco or Boss. Arguably, the part that really hit home was at the end of this scene, where Boss made sure to drag Bo and Luke's good name through the mud by claiming they stole his antique Jefferson Davis gold watch and jeweled chain, Uncle Jesse, fighting back the tears in his eyes while Daisy, Cooter and Rosco comfort him, somberly says "I'm gonna prove they didn't do that if it takes the rest of my days..."

Luann Driscoll I think one of the biggest things I miss about back then is the innocence. I did not know of the Confederacy, I didn't know about politics, right wing, leftists, deep state...none of it. All I knew was that on friday nights I got to stay up late and watch these two good ol boys and that big ol flyin' Dodge were heroes to me. The Virginia battle flag he (the general) "wore" was as much a sign of America as anything I'd ever known (remember I was 5 mind you). Now, some nearly 40 years later, I hate Dodge, but the big ol heroic dodge still has meaning to me and there will always be a warm place in my heart for "him". Now that so many here in America consider the virginia battle flag "raycisss", and anybody who flies it a klansmen. I'll be honest, I still believe that there were and still are poor "white trash" families south of the mason dixon line who fly the confederate battle flag. Families who don't have a racist bone in their collective bodies. Families who's southern pride is outweighed only by their love of America. Whew, i'm getting long winded in my old age lol.

No police officer worth a damn should ever like giving this notification to the next of kin. A good officer will feel the same pain and loss. Here, James Best showed that Rosco was still a good cop deep down. Even if he had gone corrupt, deep down, he had a heart. And, he shared in the sorrow that Jesse was feeling. Denver Pyle was brilliant as well. You could see the life go out of him as he realized that Bo and Luke were not coming home (or so everyone thought, of course).

You left out the part where Hogg says the boys stole his watch and chain, and then Jesse is like "I'm gonna prove that they didn't do that if it takes the rest of my days." Favorite part

I met Sorrel many many years ago I was at South of the Border buying fireworks June 1979 he was signing autographs at a mobile leather shop trailer there was this beautiful old chevy truck parked near them I only assume it was his. He drew a small crowd in front of that trailer we were all asking him questions. He stated he had nearby relatives and in Florida as well. I think he was born in Georgia if my memory serves me right. He is also not that fat in real life that was a fat suit he always wore and he said it was hot as hell the reason they didn't have to help him sweat in most of the scenes. He said toward the end of the series then in the late 70's that he couldn't stand being in the fat suit more than a few minutes at a time which greatly limited the scenes he was in.

As corrupt as Rosco can be, he never wants anyone to really get hurt. This was a good scene, but I would give the best Rosco scene award for his scene in S2 "Grannie Annie," where Boss Hogg is carried off by people planning to kill him. And Rosco PLEADS for Bo and Luke to help save Boss before it's too late.

This part of this episode was so perfectly put together. It reminds me of the part of an episode of MASH. The part where Radar walks into the OR and tells everyone that Henry Blake is dead

None of the cast except for Radar and Blake I think knew the ending ahead of time. The shock from the actors was genuine.

I actually remember hearing someone, I think it was one of the actors during a special reunion or something of that nature, state that the sound of the medical instrument that was dropped during that scene was someone off set dropping something during the recording due to the shock of Radar's line and they decided to keep it in cause of how well it fit into the scene.

I agree, watching this show at least thirty-seven to thirty-eight years after they rapped production, I still become startled and down right surprised when it comes to death. It took me five years after I began to watch The Dukes of Hazzard in '06 or '07 to realize that Sorrell Brooke has passed, Denver Pyle was gone and well James wasn't gone yet, but even then it took me another couple years to even discover that James Best had died. Damn shame he isn't alive he would have turned 90 a while ago and Denver would be 96 I belief. I would have liked to see them both in their elderly years next to Brooke, they died so long ago it feels like it never happened through The Dukes of Hazzard.

I saw this once, when it aired, but remember it like it was yesterday. It was television that stuck with you. They'd built up the characters so well by this point in the series that a moment like this had tremendous weight.
