Ride along of the AeroTrain at Dulles International Airport (IAD) from C Gates to B Gates with stops at A Gates and the Main Terminal.
The Aerotrain travels at a top speed of 42 mph. This train system replaced the old mobile lounges (big buses) that only traveled at a top speed of 15 mph. The old mobile lounges are still in use to and from the Main Terminal to the D Gates and from specific times to and from the A Gates to the D Gates.

This is going to make Dulles a better experience for my Dad and me. He hates the mobile lounges with a passion. He likes to move fast, and this will make Dulles better. Thank you people of Dulles (:

I absolutely love the sound that this train makes when hitting its top speed between the "C" Gates and "A" Gates station. I would like to take a ride on this one day....

@rml695 I don't quite understand your question. You mean the tunnel that goes straight ahead that's a dead end? That is the end of the AeroTrain system underneath the B gates. MWAA didn't tunnel out any of the future tracks but if they did that tunnel would leave to the (present) D gates and then onto a few new concourses and then finally the new South Terminal

@JT041196 Yes you can. However the walk from the C Station to let's say D1 is gonna be about 10-15 minutes depending on how fast you walk. If you have a D Gate that is high up in the numbers, take the shuttle from the Main Terminal and don't take the walk from the C Station

@allthatiswithinme We get that a lot while working at Dulles. Passengers complain about how confusing the signs are and to that fact I can partly agree to. Dulles has too many signs that is just too confusing. They make giving a simple direction far more difficult. But the train system has maps on each train and at each station so it's pretty straight forward on how to get from one station to another
@RubinTian
@RubinTian 12 жыл бұрын
@butamass Hey. So what you want to do is after you clear security. Follow the signs to the ABC gates and you'll head down to the train station at the Main Terminal. Once there you'll have A and C gates trains on one side and B gate trains on the other. Since you're flying out of B45 (I think) take the B gates side and it will be your first stop. Get off and follow the signs (up two flights of escalators)up to the concourse and find your gate. Hope this helps! Have a great flight. Safe travels

@allthatiswithinme Yea I have to agree with you there. Within my first week working at Dulles I could not figure out the system. If you don't mind me asking, which airport do you work at?
@RubinTian
@RubinTian 12 жыл бұрын
The switches are all automatically controlled by the computers but there's a guard rail on the side of the tracks that "guide" the train. So when the switches move, the guard rail also moves and thus the train switches tracks. There are two cement paths that the wheels of the train travel on. The wheels are just normal rubber tires you find on cars, just a little bigger

How long ago did they install this train? I recall in 1996 they had those big oversized boaty thingys they would drive across the runways from one terminal to the next.

You can see the movable switch beams at several points, they have red ends. They grip one set of the guide wheels on the outer corners.

@i305guy Air Wisconsin? Worked for them myself in Operations, though that was back in '04-05 assigning the morning flights for UAX their gates until the 2pm inbound Mega-Bank. Work now out of Tokyo's Haneda and Narita Airports as an ANA pilot, but still nice to pop into Operations under C-24 to see how everyone is doing whenever I'm doing the Narita-Dulles-Narita run as the second First Officer (replacing the Lead crew during the middle phase of the flight, then give control back near the end).

I've read that AeroTrain is being intended for a further extension through IAD, completing a full circle loop through Concourses D, E and F.

Where does that side tunnel lead when the train is on the side track being turned around at 7:41?
@RubinTian
@RubinTian 12 жыл бұрын
@rml695 Oh ok I see it now. I have no clue what that is for. My best bet would be that it's a small tunnel connecting the tracks (Inner and Outer Tracks) to save maintenance workers time crossing between them. I'll find out for sure for you and I'll get back to you.

The skytrain we have here in Singapore's Changi Airport and the LRT system here in Singapore's Sengkang and Punngol towns basically uses the same system as this one. Our systems are all overground though, unlike the underground system here. The propulsion system your airport's trains has is identical to the one used on our airport's trains.

Wow. It sticks you down a tail track to switch? That's trippy. I wonder why they didn't add a crossover between the final station and the next one down so the passengers are not treated to the sight of the train rushing towards A WALL...
4 жыл бұрын
You aren't supposed to go to the maneuvering tunnel as a passenger. The train is always emptied before that, as who knows if the trainset is EVER going to reverse very soon. And about the dead end itself, it may not last very long, as they intend to extend this service to a circle line (see Wikipedia! 😉).(..)
4 жыл бұрын
By the way, I've also read that the reason they do this is to avoid passenger saturation in a single track; if that weren't used, it could massively congest the line and the own station. That isn't as uncommon as some could think. Take a look at this clip on the Madrid Metro where a train arrives to the terminus, unboards, goes to reversion and returns all the way back to a second platform: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ab6IZ86XqNnGo40.html) Of course, many other metros will prefer to stick the dead end within the station itself instead of within a manouvering tunnel. In fact, Madrid itself has such an arrangement in the far-southeastern terminus of Line 9: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arganda_del_Rey_-_Estación_de_Arganda_del_Rey_2.JPG

Why does this subway have glass doors?
@azan-183
@azan-183 7 жыл бұрын
This is a APM (automated people mover), where most have platform edge doors for safety by keeping passengers safe from the tracks. Since the trains are automated, they cannot see if someone is in front of it. Most new subways and APM's have these platform edge doors. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_screen_doors
