While I worked at a gas station I got a phone call from the police. They informed me that a man and a woman had stolen coins from someone's house in the area. The police have found them and they will soon enter my store to try to trade the coins for money. They have tried to do this at other stores and they have been reported. The police told me to play along and act interested and the police will come in and arrest them. It happened the way they told me it would happen. The man came up to the counter and asked if he could trade in the coins for money or buy stuff with them. A police officer showed up and started asking them questions about the coins and how they had them in their possession. I know a little bit about coins, since I have a nice collection and I looked them over. Some of the coins were made out of silver and others were several 100 years old. The officer arrested the couple while another came in to get the coins. I told the officer these coins need to be in a safe for sure. The guy who owns them, kept them in an unlocked shed. I keep all mine in a safe and none of my coins are as valuable as his were.

My whole family are geeks. When I first started collecting my Uncle gave me the advice "Anything signed is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Mint condition is the only guaranteed worth" I have shared that advice to all my geeky friends and at almost every convention I have been too. I think some people forget that Pawn Shop owners need to be able to make money off of what they buy too. The store is there to sell things for a quick buck or buy things at a discounted price rather than from retail. If you think you have something worth more than what the shop offers, then attempt to sell it to a collector. Everyone's gotta make a living somehow.

The collector coins for games make me sad. My dad started a coin and paper money collection when he was in the army. He would collect paper and coins in the currency of whatever country he's at. I work at a convenience store and every week or so someone would come in with silver dollar or half dollars and I would use my own money to trade it out for the collection. Every few weeks or months a very obscure coin would show up, but mostly Canadian coins; I live in Texas and I only found one Mexican coin. There was one guy who brought in pristine old half dollars coins that must of come out of his collection...for beer or cigs; I felt really bad.

I told him the truthful value of £1 an issue, maybe £5 for low numbers. He kept desperately keeping the thread alive hoping that somebody would give him the "correct" answer of "you're a millionaire". At my old job we heard on the radio that the first Batman comic sold for a million dollars, this guy thought that my own collection, dating from the 1890's, must be worth even more, as they're that much older. I think there's another reason why the first Batman comic is worth so much.

had a fun one come in recently, kid like 18-19 sold us a bunch of vintage us currency (gold/silver certs, big bills etc.) and a bag full of silver coins......he asked for face value on everything because coinstar wouldn't take it. we also regularly have a fairly crazy guy come in tell us about his horses he owns in Africa and then try and pawn meat......like from the grocery store

I worked in a comic book store in the late 80s early 90s. We would occasionally have some idiot bring in a stack of ratty books missing the cover and torn up thinking they had a gold mine. We spent a ridiculous amount of time telling them they were worthless. One guy refused to believe it, all he said every time we told him they were worthless was "but they're old". My boss finally lost her patience and yelled "so is my grandmother, but I can't get a nickle for her!"

I have a bad slant when it comes to pawn shops. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but one time, I went into the local pawn shop and tried to sell a few things I had that I knew weren't worth much; but I was a desperate college student in debt, I needed any money I could get so I could go back for the next semester. They wouldn't take anything I had. I brought in my electric guitar (x-mas gift from my late mom, was a few hundred when she got it), a gently used hookah (smoking hookah is pretty popular where I live now and a hookah bar was a local hang out spot at the college I attended; it's shisha, not pot, that's smoked), a small bag of my late grandma's jewelry (real and costume mixed together), and a pair of boots I couldn't wear. They didn't know what a hookah was (fair enough; older generation), wouldn't take the guitar because it wasn't a high selling brand name, wouldn't take any of the jewelry, and they claimed didn't take clothing or shoes (bullshit, as they had a whole rack of clothing and shoes right smack in the middle of the store; I walked past it to get to the counter). So, I don't know why they refused everything, but they pretty much told me to shove it and get lost. Haven't been to a pawn shop since. : P

A guy we knew was going to sell a chainsaw at a pawn shop to get gas... for his chainsaw. He mentioned only wanted something like $25 for it. The chainsaw was almost new and normally would cost close to $200. So we bought it off him for $50, he then needed a chainsaw. So we loaned him "an identical" chainsaw for a day while he made the money to buy a new saw. After getting the chainsaw back we sold it because we didn't need it to the pawn shop for $100. Next day he came around with his "new" chainsaw. It was the same one we sold to the pawnshop. This guy has no problem ripping people off so we didn't feel bad about making $50 off him.

Not a pawnbroker, and the thing I sold wasn't dumb, but I do regret selling it. I had bought an old Mosin Nagant carbine years back when those things were selling like hot cakes. Unfortunately, I had hit a financial bump in the road a few years later and valued having a roof over my head more than owning a really awesome piece of history, so took it to get some rent money. Their gun guy came over to take a look at it, and while I had expected to maybe get $100 off it, he suddenly got really excited and asked me how long I had had it. It turns out it had been used in the Winter War of 1939 by the invading Soviets. The Finns would reclaim any guns off of fallen Soviet soldiers and retool them to make them even better, and then send them back against the Russians. My rifle had been one of these. The guy had never seen one in person and was more than glad to buy it off me for more than what I had originally asked for it ($200, I think). I was really disappointed when I left, but happy I had made enough to cover the rest of my rent. Later, when I had come back financially, my rifle was long gone.

I work in GameStop and usually once a month we get some little kids wanting to trade in older games, 360/PS3/Wii/DS and think they'll walk out with a couple hundred bucks each time. Every time we tell them they'll be getting like $3 due to the age/wear and tear of the games they look so shocked and their parents ALWAYS say "I told you so!" and "That's why you NEED to take care of your games!" Or we get the people who trade in more modern games expecting to walk out with a good chunk of change then get shocked when they only get a couple bucks because the game isn't rare or isn't popular. Also, we don't set the trade-in value, I honestly don't know who does and I don't really care. Just please, PLEASE, if you're going to trade in games have them in their correct cases, or at the very least ANY type of case, and CLEAN your old, dusty consoles! I've seen some SNES consoles that reek of cigarettes and 360's covered in so much grime it's made me feel sick...

Back when I was in high school, my church got a donation of tens of thousands of sports cards. The youth group spent hundreds of hours organizing them into complete sets. Then they went to sell them, just to discover that they were worth 5 to $10 for an entire set. The hourly income from the sorting alone was merely pennies. I think the church ended up just throwing most of the cards away
