Short selling means that you first sell borrowed stocks (which you don't have) at a high price (say $100/share), and in order to pay back those borrowed stocks, you need to buy them back within a set timeframe, so the plan is to buy them back at a lower price ($80 a share). This way, when the stock go down, you actually make money via the differences ($20 profit). So basically, the Wall St players were betting that Game Stop's stock would go down (it was not doing well at the time), but when it goes up, they need to buy it back at a higher price so they lose money. Hope this helps.

I saw the trailer for this movie when I went to see Stays (which was fantastic) & the trailer peaked my curiosity. But 9 out of 10 times I tend to agree with your reviews so I’m tempted to actually just wait for it to come on streaming

Short selling is when you borrow shares from a broker to sell at a high price hoping that it falls to a lower price to buy back to keep the difference.

I remembered when this happened, and it was only two years ago. In fact, SNL did a skit about it on the Jan 30, 2021 show. Great review, guys. Always enjoyable!

Don't feel slow Joseph. I've been watching Billions for years and still don't get how stocks, hedge funds or shorts work 😉 Seth Rogan definitely influenced that soundtrack 😅

Traders were betting against the stock to fail( shorting) so retail traders (normie) started pumping up the stock which went up. Hedge funds and billionaires collided with Wall Street to stop trading. They didn’t want billionaires and institutions to go under but also RobinHood didn’t allow trading on the stock which a lot of retailers to buy it. Basically us commenters got rolled overs for the billionaires

The problem is not necessarily short selling, it's the creation of fake counterfeit shares of a company then dumping them on the market as a sell of the shares. This is ramped in the U.S. Equity markets, and the profits from these sales are going overseas.

I havent seen this movie and was in the dark a little bit to what happened but to elaborate more on the concept of what when down in all of this that its kinda like betting companies to tank or go out of business. GameStop was thought to be one of those since people looked at it like another thing for example like Blockbuster that went eventually went away. I forgot the exact term but investing big in a negative way has potential to help you make money too.

Hedge Funds? I would be 'apprehensive'...about the Comedy part in the plotline. Joseph's poll quote represents that feeling adequately! Also that 'poster' showing the, uhm, bundled money stacked in *that* order 🤨Yes! Nick's poll quote speaks volumes on that one😀

Shorting stock: imagine you borrow sugar from a neighbor and go to the grocery store only to see the price of sugar went from $2 to $100. They get their sugar but you just paid $98 more for it than your neighbor.

I enjoyed this movie; however, I probably would have loved it, if I had a better understanding of "short squeeze" trading and if the writer/director provided more character development of the random characters who were chosen to depict the real/everyday citizens who were just trying to make some extra cash with the possibility to become rich. Unfortunately, this movie failed to show us more of their life's background story as well as the hardships they endured before & after their investments and after the market crashed, which was due to the illegal business practises committed by Robinhood & other greedy investors. I believe these missing details could have been replaced with some of the clips that I felt kind of dragged or by eliminating characters that appeared insignificant to the story arc. In my opinion, this movie is pretty good overall, but it had a potential to be great!

Joseph, do not call yourself a dummy. I realize it's self depreciation as a joke...but in every joke is a bit of truth. So don't, do that beautiful. Or else I will come for u and anyone else who tries it. Or I could be wrong/triggered and projecting my 💩 onto u. 💯🤨🚫🥰♥️💋

Love this channel always but you’re missing so many things even when you correct yourselves. Ie the RobinHood founders looked how they looked in real life. The movie was geared to reach a young audience. The story of what happened to a GameStop and several others they don’t mention will go down and be discussed 100 years from now. I love you both and you’re certainly entitled to your opinions I am ONLY posting this because rarely do I see people give disagreeing takes on your channel from a ratio standpoint. Thank you for doing what you do and making me laugh while educating me on films I might not normally watch or be aware of.

It's weird to give a spoiler alert for a movie about an event that happened only 3 or 4 years ago. It's weird because it could be necessary.

This movie sounds horrific (and not in a good way, like say "X" or "Barbarian"). For me, it would be like trying to enjoy a movie about tax preparation... kinda dry, definitely not an escape from reality in a good way! Any chance that you gents will be reviewing "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe"? I would highly recommend it!!! I am assuming 😊 that Nick has heard of it... 😉 Thanks for considering the review!! 🌈😍🥰

You guys are so right. I have no idea how shorting is supposed to work, either, no matter how many times they explain it. And how does shorting lead to a big payday unless those shares are bought back??? Does it mean that the stock was artificially raised, and the value of the float is worth more than the actual company????? I don't get it yet. Maybe that's why I'm not about to sink my entire savings into that crap.

Now that I think about it, I can't remember how "The Big Short" handled the more technical language in making sure audiences understood, but I do remember really enjoying the film and being absolutely amazed by the story so "Dumb Money" does sound interesting, but would I be able to understand it? Dunno. Like someone else mentioned, I'll probably wait for it to stream. Thanks to @BlakButtaFlyy for the suggestion of "Gaming Wall Street".

Do studios still screen movies for test audiences? How could they not know that people didn’t understand the terminology or what is going on? Seems like that could have been easily fixed.

The hip-hop comments were spot on! It was a device used in place of impactful writing. And the Savage remake confused the heck out of me. If the artist doesn't clear it, just don't use the song?!! They really got a Dollar Tree version made because they wanted to include the unfunny TikTok dance scenes. This movie could have been sharp and hard-hitting like The Big Short but it fell completely flat.
