Welcome to the first article in my VERSUS SERIES! These articles are not only going to compare exercises to help you choose the right ones for your workouts, but they will also help give you a better understanding of the mechanics and benefits of each exercise. So with that in mind if you are pumped for this new series be sure to leave video suggestions in the comment section below!
Today we are going to discuss two very popular exercises used in bicep workouts. They are the Dumbbell Bicep Curl and the Dumbbell Hammer Curl. Each is very effective in building muscle, but if you could only perform one to build your biceps, which would you pick? First let us understand how the biceps works. Your biceps is a two headed muscle that lies between your shoulder and forearm. The long head originates on the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula, the short head originates on the coracoid process of the scapula and the insertion point is the radial tuberosity and fascia of the forearm via the bicipital aponeurosis which is beneath the neck of the radius and helps with flexion of your forearm and supinates your forearm.
Dumbbell Bicep Curl
To perform this exercise correctly, keep your forearm supinated at the bottom of the movement. Now you might see a lot of people start with their forearm in a semi pronated position at the bottom, but as you just learned one of the functions of the biceps is to supinate the forearm. This means that if we are beginning the exercise in a supinated position, the biceps are already being activated before even starting the exercise.
From here you are going to curl the dumbbell up to your shoulder while keeping your elbow at your hips. You need to really focus on keeping your elbow in one place because that is going to keep more tension on your biceps as you curl, which is the entire reason why we are performing this exercise.
Once you reach the top of the movement simply lower the weight back to the starting position and repeat. Now I know some of you are going to say there is no point in going all the way up, but you are WRONG. You should always train in full range of motion because whatever range you do not train in, you will be weak in and more injury prone. Also, keep in mind that you break down the most muscle tissue in the negative portion of a movement and if you do not go all the way to the top (your shoulder), you are shortening the negative portion of the movement. It is not intense science guys, just stop listening to the “bros” who claim “half reps” build more muscle. They are wrong or more than likely on juice.
HAMMER CURL
The hammer curl also targets the biceps brachii however in this movement the biceps are a synergist muscle group which means they are being targeted, but are mostly being used to assist other muscles which in this case is the brachialradialis which is the muscle that runs along your forearm and the brachialis which is the muscle located deep in your upper arm which can help increase your bicep peak as it grows.
To perform this movement you need to start with your hand in midposition between supination and pronation. The reason is because in this position the brachioradialis is at its strongest. From here you are going to keep your elbow at your hip and curl your arm up until the dumbbell reaches your shoulder. Again, you want to utilize the full range of motion here so you can really take advantage of a slow controlled negative to break down more muscle fiber with each rep.
Which Exercise Is Better?
So which exercise should you pick to focus on building bigger biceps? If I had to choose just one I would pick the dumbbell bicep curl as this exercise mainly focuses on targeting the biceps brachii. But now that you are armed with all this knowledge, I am sure many of you have come to the conclusion that your arm workout should consist of both of these exercises if your goal is to build big arms because while the bicep curl is targeting mainly the biceps brachii, the hammer curl is going to help build your brachialradialis and brachialis which are just as important, aesthetically speaking, for a massive look.

ScottHermanFitness my favorite curl for over all stretching of the bicep and growth is the drape curl. i get a great burn and it targets both heads equally if performed correctly. the spider curl is another great one but harder to do if your 6'5" tall

The variation of dumbbells is extremely useful for a small person like me kzfaq.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 But the dumbbell size being large it's hard to do certain exercises like deadlift ( I have to have my hands and legs a bit wider to accommodate the size of the DB )Otherwise happy with the purchase. No excuse not to lift weight when it's snowing outside.

I am VERY excited about this series. I know it is going to help bring me back to the roots of this channel. In the beginning I was pumping out 3 - 4 HOW TO videos a week and I know those videos helped a lot of people and instead of "redoing" old videos this series will allow me to touch base with more instructional type videos but in a way that is much more beneficial to you guys in terms of helping you select the right exercises based on what your goals are. VERY EXCITED!! So please, be sure to leave your video suggestions below and if you didn't catch the few links that I had in this video for relate articles, I will post them below! #HTH MIND-MUSCLE CONNECTION (Can’t Feel The Right Muscles Activate During A Lift?) muscularstrength.com/article/Train-Your-Brain-For-Massive-Gains-Mind-Muscle-Connection 12 WEEK TRANSFORMATION CHALLENGE! muscularstrength.com/twelve-week-transformation-challenge High Protein Food! - Pasta, Oatmeal, Granola, and Snack Bars! - muscularstrength.com/true-gains

+ScottHermanFitness I'm glad you gave us the last tip. I have trained for about 3 years and really serious for almost 1 and a half and I've always tried to concentrate on form. Then I see guys that have huge arms at the gym swinging heavy dumbbells up and down, and I've been thinking to myself if correct form is overrated in building muscles. I have always been pretty sure that you'll prevent injuries by doing the exercises in a correct form though. But I'm also guessing that those huge guys aren't 100% nattys either...

Your videos are great! I’ve been searching for a site that has legitimate gym workout plans and found one. They have each exercise video highlighted and it takes you to a KZfaq video, most of them are your videos. I’ve learned a lot over the past few days and I’ve been more sore the past couple days doing this workout routine than I had been the whole time going and lifting for 30-40 minutes by jumping from machine to machine. Keep up the great content!

+nickwithasickness Sometimes he does the "r-dropping" of the Boston accent, which is the most commonly associated part of the new england accent, but his vowels aren't as long as most Bostonian and new Englanders. It's definitely an inconsistency, so he's either trying to "un-learn" his Boston accent or he's trying to imitate someone. It's really hard to tell what he's doing.

Do a Barbell vs dumbell Bench press
@BenMotivated
@BenMotivated 8 жыл бұрын
+rayukk Pretty much the same thing except barbell is to build strength and dumbell is more hypertrophy(muscle building).
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Motivated that's not true really. Both can build strength or muscle (hypertrophy). That just depends on rep ranges and weight. The main difference is obviously db isolates each pec more so it's better overall because you won't develop imbalances using dbs. Also, can get a better contraction with dbs because of the freer range of motion and it's less hard on the wrists and shoulders.
@BenMotivated
@BenMotivated 8 жыл бұрын
bonzihunter I kept my answer small for a reason. I'm not referring to rep ranges. There's a reason someone can bench 315 and only dumbbell press up to 120s but can barely press if at all 160s. Because barbell press is a strength exercise like deadlift, and squat. That's why you see people trying to increase their bench press, not their dumbell press.

I've been doing the hammer curl mostly for quite some time. I really like how it makes my arms look compared to previously training the bicep curl alone. The downside is that from a front view my arms look smaller(results from hammers only) compared to the results from bicep curls only. However from the side view, or when i flex, the hammer results looks bigger.
