I feel like Eric was saying in a roundabout way that Asian American/Canadian musicians still have a hard time being seen a simply American/Canadian musicians period and being marketed as such without any reliance of the "foreign exoticism" or popularity of kpop or jpop. Eric Nam's recent music is really just pop to anybody who has bothered to listen to it. But at the same time he did get his music start in Korea and gained enough popularity from his time in Korea that it definitely helped him in becoming an indie artist aiming more at an English speaking audience. Highly doubtful without that Korea experience that Eric could've become an English language musician or it would've been a hell of a lot harder to grow his audience. I remember seeing Dumbfoundead in Montreal and in NYC shows so very long ago as being one of the early Asian American musicians trying to make it in USA. It was very hard to build an audience back then.

He has also dipped into voice and acting ...for sure he has a very bright future !!! Good luck and best wishes Eric !!!

I feel like kpop is where jazz was in the early 1940's before it separated into bebop and swing. I wouldn't be surprised if an underground korean music movement is forming with creative musicians who feel stiffled by the commercialization of kpop that is happening on a global level now. Time will tell if this idea is true.

Getting thrown into another culture is sooo nerve wracking but it's reality for so many people in so many jobs. You just have to survive 😂

There is a very real difference between appreciation and interest in Korean culture vs obsession with Korean culture (which can manifest as very unhealthy behavior), so I respect the fact that Dumb and Eric want the media and general public to just take the time to explore a bit more of each niche involved in all those different buckets related to entertainment and Korean artists and come to them with that respect. I love K dramas and enjoy the music of several K pop artists, but I am very aware that those 2 niche areas don't represent ALL Korean culture.

Great episode Dumb. I always thought Eric Nam was just a pretty boy who got things handed to him, but gained a lot of respect for him through this interview. Very well-spoken, and hard-working man who deserved the success he's gotten~

28:10 FYI, the term "wife beaters" came from the late 70s - 80s movies where you would see a guy abusing his girl and he usually was only wearing a tank top. It became a common theme in film and so therefore if you saw a man wearing one we would joking refer to those movie characters portrayed.
