Pretty solid info. It can quickly go from “part-time side hustle” to full time job if you get your name out and treat your customers right. I started a small dumpster rental business in 2007 and it was the first of it’s kind anywhere near me. It was very popular and I had a ton of demand. I didn’t have the time necessary to take it to the next level so I sold it (at a profit) in 2017. The new owner has more time and flexibility than I did and has more than tripled in size.

I made a very good living repairing rooloff dumpsters. Started with a used gas drive welder a torch set and the basic hand tools and a beater pickup. That was 1985 and now have a new. F550 welding rig and more work then I can do. Even at $140/hr. Truck, insurance both liability and health, fuel and repairs.= $90/ hr. So I make $50 / hr 60 hours a week.= $3000/ week.

great video, the number crunching is key. office and yard is included in the cost breakdown? based on areas that can take a chunk out of profits too. based on where you are now in the business and what you know is the route of trailer and pickup vs dedicated hooklift trucks , which one is better for startup?
@lakechamplainsanitation7226
@lakechamplainsanitation7226 2 жыл бұрын
When I was doing this on a smaller level an office and large yard space were not necessary. I would suggest a hooklift from the get go only if you have the financial means to do so.....hard to beat a trailer you can hook to your daily driver and with just a couple dumpsters revenue enough to cover the truck payment and all business expenses so you can keep your main jobs income all in your pocket or re-invest into growing the business faster like I did.

Facebook pages and word of mouth is free. Depends on the person, if you know alot of people it's easier to get the word out. And you really shouldn't have much for maintenence fees when it comes to the trailer and dumpsters. Especially first starting out when they are brand new. He also mentioned that it would probably take 6 months to really start getting those 5 rentals a week.

INCOME TAX. Why does everyone ignore that part? It's your biggest "expense". Anything above and beyond your day job is going to be hit pretty hard on the tax end. As far as this vs. rental property and having customers vs tenants...well you rental property doesn't depreciate. It's called equity.

I believe where i am located it is $11/yard but I am checking. For a 15 yard dumpster that could be like $160 of the $325 plus fuel and other expenses. Not very profitable for two trips and time I spend. Also.. I didnt see cost of a trailer and related items to haul the dumpsters. A little less than that profit wise and it depends on # of employees, wages, insurance levels, equipment cost/ cash or debt basis rent is relatively small and doesn’t fluctuate much compared to all of the other expenses. In my opinion off of $400k you the owner should be able to take between $95-120k salary and still keep cash in retained earnings for the future

Why do you like a pick up and trailer over a larger truck like a kenworth or mack? Personally when I look at the set up you have I Personally see a 50k (atleast) truck and a 10k to 15k trailer. (Not saying your set ups bad just something I've been wondering)

I like it for starting out because it’s brand new equipment for the price of worn out used large trucks like you mentioned. Also you can drive the pickup to the grocery store or the bank when you aren’t making money with it, or tow personal trailers on the weekend. This setup is for the person starting out in my opinion. Until you have proven you can revenue $125-$150k worth of dumpster rentals consecutively I personally wouldn’t get a big truck because of how expensive maintenance, insurance, initial purchase, etc. will be. This set up with dumpster, trailer and truck brand new - $68,000. New kenworth or Mack truck with a 15YD dumpster, and tarper - $140,000.

@@lakechamplainsanitation7226 I’m pretty sure when you least the truck they have it insured. And you could probably buy some supplemental insurance. And from what he said in the video about leasing trucks they do all the maintenance and after so many miles they give you another truck and I’m not sure about now but I think last year when he made the video he said it was $.22 a mile is what they charge.

@@Lifes_Apprentice I disagree entirely, I barely pushed and sold over 300 rentals last year doing everything by myself including book work, marketing, phone calls and servicing my at the time 450 customer account base and only had 4-5 dumpsters all summer. I’d say 40 of my rentals were to existing customers the rest were 1st timers. If you’re a hungry entrepreneur and know how to brand a business you can do it, Anybody can , 1,000 rentals now that’s a stretch but a couple hundred in 365 days is not.
