Stilgar being a father figure to Paul and Jessica being a mother figure to Chani is a nice parallel. In the book they both lost their father, this is works almost as well.

@@VihaanBelani this is gonna be a spoiler but if you don’t mind… Liet-Kynes is Chani’s father in the book. Chani’s mother was a Fremen woman. In the movie Liet-Kynes is a woman so she is presumably Chani’s mother and her husband was a Fremen warrior. Liet-Kynes is half-Fremen in both the book and the movie. His/her father was Pardot Kynes, also imperial ecologist.

It seems to be implied, as the first movie was, that this film will be rated PG13. Considering Villeneuve has deemed this as a war movie, I hope the director's intent to bring this movie to a wider audience doesn't diminish the very real brutality of the Dune universe.

The Lord of the Rings movies are PG 13 and still manage to be pretty brutal. They literally catapulted bloody decapitated heads into Minas Tirith. And Return of The King is a movie that could also be described as a war epic.

Very different in tone and genre, but I think Dunkirk managed to be as intense and harrowing as any R-Rated war film.

Paul lost his father, watch his best friend died in both dreams and reality in trying to ensure his survival, now being alone as a young man to protect his mother and unborn sister in the most dangerous place in the universe, deals with falling in love for the first time all the while fulfilling a prophecy thousands of years in the making, and is now being called to lead a people against the same enemy that attacked his family. Here stands, Feyd Rautha, the pinnacle of Harkonnen cruelty and sword mastery wanting to destroy all that survived/remains of the noble House Atreides from the initial assault and betrayal. If ever the "Sleeper must Awaken" for Paul to avenge his father, best friend Duncan, house Atreides, and deliver the Fremmen from oppression once and for all, then it should be one of the most epic sword fight in all of film....and Master Hans Zimmer on audio....OMG...the movie is going to be epic in every sense....can't wait🍻

i’m really excited to see little alia and what denis does with feyd, lady fenring and the rest. i must admit, i wasn’t as stoked about every single person in this cast the way i was for part 1 but i trust denis and i’m excited to see all of their portrayals of these amazing characters. question; do you think there will be time for leto 2 will make his debut and exit? i’m interested to see how it would be handled…

@@chance1774 I think it would be the "final straw" in what the Emperor and the Harkonnen take from Paul and the Fremen. So it makes complete sense from a film storyline perspective to utilize that.

@@secretsofdune Gurney was angry when he couldn't kill Feyd... I doubt the book Gurney would give Rabban to the Fremen... He would kill him himself.. But, according to the book a Gurney vs Rabban wouldn't happen either.

I imagined Rabban simply died in battle, even when I haven't read Dune yet - but I heard earlier that Rabban 's death isn't detailed. After I read it, at least it turned out Gurney really didn't kill him (according to his behavior), and Stilgar was the one who knew Rabban is dead, though he doesn't say he killed him. These are all information from the novel... Villeneuve has pretty much freedom to do it.

@@neilmurphy966 The word "kaida" means "the pillar" or "the pedestal" and kaida's second meaning is "the rule" or "the law". A pillar keeps the building up and the rule keeps the system up and running. Both a building and a system relies on them to stood still. So everything the Fremen has built relies on Muad'Dib :D

15:56 I remember in the SciFi miniseries of Children of Dune, Paul tells the ghola Duncan that his programming for betrayal is "..what the Tleilaxu have written upon you" I'm not saying it's a Tleilaxu thing here, but there's a concept of something outside ourselves being imprinted on us like text.. maybe that's the Others here from genetic memory after the Water of Life?

I'm beyond stoked for this movie and I'm most intrigued for whenever we'll first see Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV.

I understand. The OCB does contain biblical themes/texts too though, which would explain "Zenchristian," but that isn't exactly canon anyway, that comes from the Dune Encyclopaedia, not Frank Herbert's actual written work.

@Secrets of Dune oh yes she did . I forgot about that. I was watching her recently. In a movie she did ( the Oxford murders ) frodo from Lord of the rings . ( eliga wood pardon my spelling) and John hurt . She had a crush in him and he didn't fancy her . ( reminded me of irulan)

Between the recent trailer released and other videos on this subject, I might possibly know 2 things: 1) Feyd must at least start off with hair, because he's shown with a full head of it in the trailer, and might end up losing it in some ritualistic way (since it does look like he's got Sardaukar in the background). 2) Denis Villenueve will be covering Dune Messiah, as well, so we're looking at a trilogy here. I'm also super-stoked to have learned that Paul's rite of passage and first ride of the sandworm will be a significant portion of the film. Since there's supposedly going to be a more practical approach to the sandworms, there might be a lot of footage of the sandworm itself and the experience of learning how to ride it.

But since it also looks like he's got Sardaukar behind him, I wonder if the director's going to add a scene where Feyd gets shaved in order to prepare for battle. If there's a gladiatorial fight scene earlier on for him, what if that's the reason for his baldness?

😂 There's so many things I could have nit-picked about the recent news.

Alt shift x in his Dune video talks about Sheik Shamil or at least the book about him and his people's struggle as an inspiration for the Fremen for Frank Herbert. But he mistakenly claims that they fought a group called "Padishah" .. which is of course incorrect. Padishah is a title like Sultan not a group. One of the ways that the general Ottoman population referred to the Ottoman Sultan was "Padisha". E.g "Padishah-m chok yasha" (written as it's pronounced, long life my Padishah) Sheik Shamil fought against the Tsarist forces. When Shamil was sent to exile to Russia his Armenian wife remained loyal. After he died she moved to the Ottoman empire where the Padishah/Sultan gave her a pension. Sheik Shamil to this day is an incredibly celebrated and loved figure in Turkey.

-im means my, so they would add this to the end of the title, i.e. Sultan-im = my Sultan/my Sultana (depending on which sex you're speaking to) or Hyunkar-im = my King/your Majesty.

In the book she was at the arena fight and it was basically to find out who the heir of House Harkonnen will be on the orders of the Emperor. We learn that through the discussion with Count Fenring (who I hope is still in the film).

I really hope this movie series makes it to at least Children of Dune. Although that might create some filming issues because of the twins' age in the book, I still want to see it. It was nice to see the white/black blades in the promo image, it makes me hopeful for the film oddly enough. While having some quibbles about the first movie I did enjoy it. Hopefully the second movie be more enjoyable, or at least just as enjoyable.

The expectation for now, and from the start, was 3 films, the third being adaptation of Dune Messiah. Not Children of Dune. BOOK SPOILER If Children of Dune were made (as above, I do not expect it to be) I take for granted that the twins would be aged up, as they were on television. The age issue that bothers me would be the Alia/Duncan romance. She's 15 or 16 when that relationship begins in CoD. Mamao was in his early 40's when Duncan was killed, he's 44 now. He'll continue to age. Icky.

15:35 but it might not be water for mixing the pigment, it might be raw unaltered water of life which is supposed be a deep bluish colour? And it shows she's a Reverend Mother as it's toxic? (Tho Chani dipped her finger into an ewer of it in the book..) but maybe a quill brush dipped in bowl to write lettering here? It seems a very intimate thing to do anyway!

Yes they could be. They could be Henna tattoos which are temporary and this could be something she does of her own accord which I like the idea of.

From what I remember, the Dune book is not an war action story. Why are people not worried by this? Or have we just accepted that the film is going to be very different from the book? Most of the war stuff happens off screen in the book. Herbert didn't seem to care much for it. He was more interested in the politics, psychology and spirituality, wasn't he?

I think I saw it in one of you previous videos describing how Dune part 2 would begin and when they reach siech tabr Paul goes with Stilgar whereas Jessica follows Chani and so that's why I think we see Jessica behind Chani in the picture and not necessarily because she stopped Paul and went ahead of him. Then again maybe she does...

Yes that's also true. It could merely be the moment Chani takes Jessica to Reverend Mother Ramallo. However, in the script they changed out of their stillsuits before that which is why I think it could be while they are still all entering the cave at first. Unless they've scrapped the changing into Fremen clothes part.

Perhaps the liquid medium they used for the tattoos was the Water of Life itself. How cool would that be! And that might also take a toll on the wearer over time, while also boosting their spice-enhanced abilities. 😃🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm fairly confident in Timotheé's ability to portray romance and complex emotions, it's Zendaya who I wonder how it'll be. Not doubting her ability, I just haven't seen much of her in this kind of role.

14:22 those tattoos.. the circle with a dot, which is between eyebrows is like the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for "Re" the sun-god.. maybe it's Al-Lat here which would make sense to Fremen culture on Arrakis..?

Stilgar was always 1 of my fav characters, and his relationship with Paul. He had lost so much, and was glad he got Gurney back later. Cannot wait for this to come out. Just hope Deni stays with all the films if they continue with the rest of the story. Tho with the tv shows, would be better if they started with the prequels, tho not as well written, would be good to show how everything eventually came to be. What you said at 3:30 is interesting. I was under the impression the Fremen people viewed the sandworms as the incarnation of God (similar to how Christians view Jesus Christ). Did they definitely in the early books really only see them as holy and not literally God (or part of God) and did the change in the later books happen because of the God Emperor?

They do refer to the sandworms as "gods below," but in the mighty sense, not the literal sense. Interesting to note also that Herbert doesn't use a capital for that wording. But in the Fremen rituals which Jessica uses to "fulfil the prophecy" among the Fremen, she uses "God" in the singular and it is spelled with a capital. This has been something misunderstood for a very long time among Dune fans I think, and it didn't really help with the language from the filmmakers of Dune Part One almost reaffirming that. So it's interesting to see Villeneuve play it down more now.

@Secrets of Dune Dune has a lot of themes, and environmentalism is definitely a big part of it. I like to imagine what the Atreides' long-term harvesting plan would be like had that unpleasant thing not happened and they learned more of the ecology.

The thing is, the red hair of the Harkonnens, in the books, is a major tell of their clan and is seen in the red hair of Lady Jessica, who is, as it turn out, the secret daughter of Vladimir Harkonnen. Turning them into bald men seems to be ridiculously needless.

I'm really looking forward to this film, and I'm so glad we are getting it. I was so worried before the first one came out that it would have bombed, and we would get the second half. I was never so invested in the financial performance of a movie before. I still want the second half to perform well, but it is not a big concern and if we don't get another Dune film. I'm perfectly happy with the one Denis Villeneuve has given us.

While I am hyped for the movie, I do not like two things about this first look. First is that Feyd is bald. It's just a bad design choice, as he is surrounded by bald, pale guys in black armor. They should have given him hair to make him stand out. And the second thing is the potential of Rabban fighting Gurney. I feel like it's gonna be too hollywood. Yes they have a rivalry, but I liked how in the book, it almost felt like Gurney was being robbed of his chance to get any sort of personal revenge on the Harkonnens. He didn't get to kill the spy, he didn't get to kill Baron, Rabban nor Feyd. He was basically left to stand angry on the sidelines, while Paul did everything. Bet now he will get his big hero moment, and decapitate Rabban.

I'm still not convinced Villeneuve understands Dune. This opus is about power, religion and control over thousands of years. Only secondarily is it a love story. Furthermore, the galactic war will be a highly destructive Jihad...not a heroic crusade. Paul eventually rejects his messianic role altogether. His son, the God-Emperor Leto ll, enslaves humanity in Hopes of establishing his Golden Path. An entirely different trajectory.

I do worry that it will not be possible to deliver Paul's journey in a gradual, natural way in this film - given that in the first film he is charmingly innocent and morally concerned. I love Timothee's performance but can they really deliver Herbert's true message with Paul's arc, "beware charismatic leaders". Paul acquiring Fremen skills will be exciting, how are they going to subvert the usual white saviour Hollywood story?

I have serious doubts about this trajectory. Likely will degrade into "the usual white saviour Hollywood story." Villeneuve should immerse himself in the entire saga. To fully grasp Herbert's genius one must examine the totality of this world and its evolution. Dune is simply an introduction.
