The beautiful paradox: Herbert criticizes religion - ALL religion - and yet at the same time illustrates it with respect and even a tone of awe while not losing the critical perspective. I think it's one of the aspects of his work, this artful tension that draws people in the most.
@dasmysteryman12
@dasmysteryman12 Ай бұрын
You have a point. I think you see that in the fact that there are hundreds of religions in the Dune Universe. Most of them have some seeds of the missiona protectiva, but some stand on their own. If Herbert was purely anti-religion, he would have had just one religion in his universe, and that religion would be a caricature.

Right, yeah coffee is a big part of their culture, but there’s also meat wrapped in vine leaves which is found in the Middle East. I think it’s called Waraq ‘Enab and it can contain meat and or rice or both. Chani gives that to Paul to eat so that’s part of the Fremen diet too.

Dune shouldn’t be placed in the sci-fi/fantasy category because what Frank Herbert did was create a possible future for where humans could end up.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Ай бұрын
I very much agree with this. It's so disappointing when I see arguments that begin with "but it's fiction" "it's 20,000 years in the future" because it normally indicates the individual has totally missed the point of what Frank Herbert was doing, which is linking all the way back to Earth's history in a pretty realistic way for the most part.
@sixtina1674
@sixtina1674 Ай бұрын
It's placed there for a reason. Science fiction deals with the effects that science and technological advancements might have on the human condition. Things like spacefold are not imposible but they are not plausible by today's understanding of science. And the genetic memories of the Bene Gesserit, as well as the prescient powers of various users of the spice are quite fantastical from our point of view.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Ай бұрын
Of course the sci fi genre makes the most sense for Dune, but I get the original posters comment and where they’re coming from. Frank Herbert said once: My Arab friends wonder why it’s called science fiction. Dune they say is a religious commentary. The thing that has often been aimed at it is that it is philosophical fiction, rather than science fiction.”
@marcb2raw
@marcb2raw Ай бұрын
@@sixtina1674 genetic memories may seem fantastical to those who have lost any connection to our true past. If you ever heard the term Great Reset then you will understand these stories 20k yrs in the future are mirroring something from our past and Frank was well aware and that’s the reason for my original comment.

@@secretsofdune Well, I can start by pointing out that the name "Chani," if pronounced with the throaty "Kha" sound that we learn from the 8th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, likely stems from the word "Chai" - meaning life, or "Chaya" - meaning "spirit of life" or "midwife." Though you probably already knew that. One thing I recall from my first reading of Dune was that Herbert had a bunch of instances where he mixed Arabic and Hebrew phrases together. I wouldn't be shocked if he used some Aramaic terms from the Talmud either.

@@secretsofdune "Sietch Tabr" could also stem from the term "Tabernacle" - the holy tent structure used by the Hebrews during their 40 years in the desert. I love the introduction to Ramadan and Dune here! It is very educational. Can we make a video about prayer and its function in the book and islam, particularly around Jamis' passing and the war council in the South of Arrakis? When I think of the Lady Jessica does it feel slightly odd if the we push the comparison to current Islam? What is her role in such comparison?

The Fremen's military superiority is attributed to the harsh conditions of Arrakis, which I took as a metaphor for the enlightenment fasting is said to bring; so the Fremen who live in a constant fast are rewarded. I wondered, what could they give up when they already have so little? I then assumed that the Fremen were exempt from mandatory fasting during the period like some Muslims very impoverished, pregnant, or liable to poor health are. I did not notice all of the series' signs that they still observed the month especially, except for an old woman using it as a marker of time.

As a muslim, I have to clarify that we fast purely for the sake of Allah and not other worldly benefits. The concept behind is that Allah (God, Supreme Being, Infinite Power) wants us to abstain from Halal (Allowed) things and show our loyalty towards him. It's difficult, painful and hard work. Especially, in summers Ramadan is no walk in the park. But Allah says, " My people Fasts for me and I will give them reward worthy of their sacrifice". Another place he say, "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting, as it was decreed upon those before you, that you may become righteous." So, whether or not we get the physical benefits, doesn't matter! What we seek is entirely spiritual.
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune Ай бұрын
Yes that true. I didn’t go into too much depth there, but what I tried to show was that aside from the spiritual reasons, fasting also has numerous benefits on the body’s health, not just the obvious weight loss elements. From my understanding, in Islam whatever is prescribed to do is for the benefit of humanity whether they understand it or not, as in whether the real reasons or all of the reasons are disclosed or not. And there are some things mentioned in Islamic texts that are left a mystery which is where bi la kaifa comes into things (also a phrase used on Dune haha).
