Having the Baron refer to someone as a "dangerous man" beautifully establishes the Emperor power without a single frame dedicated to him
One thing I love about this scene is that it establishes the Emperor as a menacing character as well, without ever showing him or revealing him too much about it. The face of the conspiracy against the Atreides is the Baron, but the man truly pulling the strings is the Emperor; a dangerous and cunning man who rules over an entire galaxy.

@@MistaGify Ok maybe you can explain this to me since Im probably not smart enough to understand. I’ve seen time and time again that the Harkonen were inspired by the Soviet Union, but I don’t see how other than the fact that in the books, their family color is Red. Other than that, they are far more reminiscent of a stereotypical evil noble family.

@@stingerjohnny9951 You’re right about the Harkonens being a stereotypically evil noble family. Just look at the Baron’s morbid obesity and depraved homosexuality! I like how over the top evil the Harkonnens are here. I know that sounds wrong, especially compared to the lynch version, but what I mean is, I like how boldly (no pun intended) and simply evil they are, aesthetically. Just a nice straightforward villainous movie faction. It takes a whole legacy of movie villains and basically condenses them. They’re nosferatu-cenobite-xenonorph-orc combined, all while still just being humans. It’s not really what the book described at all, but I like this more. They’re just ‘the bad guys’ so they’re slimy, brutish, creepy, dark, brutal. I read somewhere that they were inspired by bugs hiding under rocks, and I can really see it. Their whole aesthetic is like high tech worm-and-scarab, with their heads being the maggots and their armour being the black insect carapace. Huge fan.

I really wish they got more screen time with Stellan/the Baron. The role was so perfectly written and acted in this movie. I absolutely loved Dune the book, and the Baron in there is very talkative, but I have to admit the way they made him here, much more reserved and frugal with speech, just works so well. I think he didn't get much screen time because of the time it takes to get the makeup and fat suit on, his age, etc. Oh well. At least one more movie with him.
@glennjanot8128 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, most of the "talkative" in the books is characters introspecting, as in talking to themselves. Which is hard to translate to the screen unless you do it with voiceovers like in Sherlock Holmes with RDJ
@malis61 Жыл бұрын
I heard he will get more screen time in part 2. But, I loved the Zen quality to Villenueve's direction. No one can remake Dune in a way true to the book. For one thing, David Lynch's version was visual everything I imagined that universe to look like. I am sure that is all protected by copyright. But the other issue is that film required voice overs and a booklet that came with the video tape. I had read the book as a teen ager, but many had not. This version does not. With a few strokes, you know instantly that Harkonnen is a very cunning and thoroughly frightening individual. I had to watch it several times to pick up on all the images and scenes that paint everything you need to know to follow the story. It is easier to understand, process and keep up with so the story can carry you along. And also I was thrilled they chose to had a Swedish actor plan Harkonnen with the correct name pronouciation and as a "Naked in the Sauna" Scandanavian that Brian Herbert portrays him the "House Harkonnen". Calling him Harkoonen in Lynch's Dune added to making him scary as it sounded more German. Americans don't usually think of Scandanavians as "evil." But....remember the Vikings and Berzerkers? (I am of Scandanavian heritage but mostly Sami.)

When Frank Herbert went out to invent a name for the villains of his book, he got a hold of a Finnish phonebook and selected the most brutal sounding name he could find: Härkönen (which is today the last name of some five thousand Finns) was selected because it sounds particularly harsh for an English speaker. Thus Harkonnen got their name. But what is particularly interesting to me, a Finn, is that the first time we see baron Harkonnen in the new movie is when he is having a steam bath. Sure, one of the themes of the movie is that the rich and powerful have water and live on planets awash in it (no pun intended) while the Fremen have to spit in their coffee pots and recycle their dead in order to have enough just to survive, but as a Finn, the other significance of the steam bath is not lost. That thing the baron was sitting in is, whether or not the makers of the film understood or realized it, a sauna, in a form it might be known in the far future of the dune universe. There is no other alternative for it. Once you get used to having a sauna you wont let go. And the Harkonnen certainly have not, not even when the passing millennia has changed their language and culture, their physique, even their name. Thus, the Harkonnen are space Finns. They may be villains but they are true Finns that have never forgotten the Löyly.

Been hooked ever since. As someone who vaguely knew the story but never read the books or saw the ‘84 version, this instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time. The whole “Star Wars for adults” idea that they ran on was seen through perfectly and was one of the biggest reasons why the film was so good. Being able to feel and identify with what each faction feels and why each is doing what they’re doing is what sets Dune apart from everything else. Part 2 is going to slay.
