I just started reading Sabers of Paradise by Leslie Blanch, which inspired Dune. It's a nonfiction book about Imam Shamyl, a Daghestani leader who led a war against the Russian empire in the 19th century. I didn't realize how much Herbert pulled from this book. E.g. The secret hunting language, the crysknife (called a kindjal and they used to say to their opponent "may thy kindjal rust" similar to "may thy knife chip and shatter"), the part about the women fighting as well as the men and throwing their babies at the enemy (and this is just in the first couple of chapters).

It’s really interesting! It’s a bit dated in the language and attitudes in it but there’s so many good stories in it that it’s worth at least looking through. One of the more wild ones was that Caucasian leaders would hunt Russian soldiers with cheetahs that would sit on the back of their horses. I thought it was an exaggeration but there are actual paintings of Khans riding with cheetahs on the backs of the horses.

Besides the crysknives of the Fremen, the Dune setting does also have kindjals as common melee weapons. Duncan uses them regularly in knife-fighting. Bigger double-edged daggers with a smaller guard, of Caucasus origin.

Excellent commentary on the novel versus Denis' movie, and I certainly agree with 95% of what you mention. I'm quite amazed at how wonderfully you handled this. On a side note: I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a small sentence early in the novel and an early Irulan writing at a header that Paul never had any childhood playmates or friends! Wow, what does that do to a child? Anyway, I'll be interested in your comparison of Dune Part 2 and the novel.

I think Part 1 was missing out on a lot of context because it didn't have enough screen time (I wish we could get an extended cut). I also feel that the Jamis battle lacked any emotional weight. It just kinda came out of nowhere. Honestly that was the only part of the movie I kinda disliked.

20:35 I would add that the Atreides are the most moral of the noble houses but they aren't kind just because of their noble heart, they have a strong "PR department" so to speak. Many good gestures are calculated (but then again, they could get away not doing things that they do anyway). Of course, in any case, always better than the alternatives.

Just finished reading part one of the book after having seen both of the movies. I personally like the book more so far. I like information-gathering and complex theories and stories, so the book hits the spot. The movies in comparison literally feel like I'm dreaming the book. The atmosphere, the music, the mystical visions, and the sparse dialogue, the details and events being a little bit out of order, etc. I honestly wonder if that is what the director was going for when adapting the book to film--dreaming the books.

17:10 I think it's interesting. In the film, Yueh says to the Baron that he wants to release her from her agony and he could join her. That to me read like he resigned to die as long as he knew that this meant she was also dead. Very specific wording for how it was shown to us that the Baron likes to do monkey paw deals. I was really bummed about the Thufir Hawat stuff because I love that actor and would've loved to see him spar with Jessica lol.

Something you made me think of when talking about Jamis challenging Jessica and Paul, i think Jamis was such a religious zealot that he could see through the BS and see how they didnt quite fit the prophecy. Which is ironic because his beliefs were planted by the bene gesserit and should be serving Jessica. I might be misremembering this.

Good analysis, it is not easy to remember all the book details, there is so much to remember. I liked the first film, knowing the story took away some of the awe. I expect small changes in both, I just hope we do not lose some important themes. I expect some aspects of the book will not be expanded on until the third film. If you like the first book, you will absolutely love the next two. The four book is not really suitable for a film but is a major in depth explanation of the overall goal for mankind controlled by Paul and his son The 5th and 6th book pick up the results of the first 4 books in the far future. The son of Hebert wrote two books to complete the original series but I think he went off at a tangent that his father would not have done, but they suit all the prequel books the son has written, so I understand his motive.

Bene Gesserit aren't really witches as that would imply the use of supernatural powers which isn't what they do. Every Bene Gesserit ability is peak human skills, having learned to control their bodies down to the thinniest atom, to perceive and "read" people, to change the chimical composition of poisons in their body, and to project pinpoint voice commands that instill ideas in another's person mind, etc. Just like Mentats are also peak human skills in information gathering and retention. This is all a result of the Butlerian Jihad, and subsequent ban of all artificial intelligence. It was determined that the human body needed to be taken to its absolute limits, to achieve complete mastery over it, in order to essentially become the ultimate "thinking machine", to make up for forbidden AI technologies. That philosophy birthed the Bene Gesserit, the Mentat and the Navigators.
@WhytheBookWins

@@WhytheBookWins Hmm, I don't recall that being the case (though that might just be my memory), but the Navigators are essentially permanently soaking in spice gas, which is what give them their prescience powers and the ability to see the safest path through the stars. You'll encounter one reading Dune Messiah. They've become wierd mutated fish people. In the David Lynch movie, they are even more grotesque looking... I think, in Dune Part 1 at least, we only see Guild representative wearing these dome helmet that appear to be filled with spice gas too, but not a senior Navigator.

@@WhytheBookWins I seem to recall only the Reverend Mothers do the concentrated stuff, and only to awaken their ancestral memory. Otherwise it's just the same life extending and other therapeutic use others use. The Mentats and non-reliance on computers is more of technophobia. Part of the back story is that AI took over the civilisation thousands of years before until they were overthrown in the Butlerian Jihad. So a lot of the technologies are biological based: Bene Gesserit body control, spice spiked Navigators, Bene Tleilaxu geneticists.

Excellent job. I am a big fan of the Frank Herbert Dune novels and was hella excited when it was announced that they were doing another Dune movie. Like you I agree that the 2021-2024 movies are visually stunning and follow the book pretty closely. However, one thing I do appreciate about the David Lynch movie, is that a lot more exposition was done around the economics of spice. Lynch never lets the audience forget that the entire motivation driving the political intrigue in this world is the Spice Melange as the oil that keeps the wheels of this fictional universe turning. In the 2021 film, there is barely a vague mention by the Emperor’s envoy and the Baron. The other aspect of the Lynne film that was vitally important is his exposition around the importance of the Guild as a major manipulative force diving the dangerous politics in this world, along with the bene gesserit sisterhood. I was massively disappointed that the role of the guild was virtually omitted from the Denis Villeneuve film. To me the Guild and its navigators, are one of the most captivating players in this universe. I hope we see them featured more in the next film. Does anyone else out there have any thoughts about this, if so I would love to know what you think. I would also hope that the Thufir Hawat storyline is included. Having said all of this. Dune Two might be the most visually spectacular sequel to a film I have ever seen. Thanks for your content, I really enjoyed it!

Glad you liked the video! My part two video will be up tomorrow or Wednesday (currently editing) and it I touch on a couple of these things! I love both but one of the criticisms is that Frank H. renders the villains in a rather simplistic way common to 1960s sci-fi. True, but I think they serve a purpose and illustrate how this strata of humanity has evolved to be so unfeeling and ruthless. Dune is, after all, about a vision of mankind at extremes.
@WhytheBookWins
@WhytheBookWins 4 ай бұрын
Yeah that's true, usually I really dislike when villains are written in such a simplistic way but I think because this is a fantasy book I didn't notice it. With literary fiction I want characters that feel like real people, but with this I went in not expecting reality.

@Tomurow
@Tomurow 3 күн бұрын
@@KennethKaniff999 No, quite the opposite, I was actually offering a defense of the portrayal of the villains (in both book and film). The number-one critique often leveled at the book is always that the villains are rather 'flat' or one-dimensional. A potential justification for this is that these various strains of humanity have evolved beyond what we, the reader, would recognise as typically human. Yes, it's a bit of a free pass to Frank H. as this could just as likely be a trope of the era but it is interesting to think about nonetheless. Hope that clears things up.👍
