I thought the actress cast as Merricat was perfect. She looked very upset when going into the village, but simply steels herself to deal with it and finish her tasks.

It did look stupid having a little girl with blue eyes show up in the 84 version. So yeah, she works in the book but maybe not the best on screen.

Character development is something Ottessa absolutely nailed it in Lapvona that I actually binged read her other books (this was the first novel I read by her). My Year of Rest and Relaxation - I sensed envy towards the end that Reva was able to end her life (if not by choice) where our unnamed character couldn't/didn't.

@WhytheBookWins oh it's absolutely wonderful!!! The one with Sutton Foster as Jo and Maureen McGovern as Marmee. Was in Broadway in the early 2000s. It is stunning. I had the pleasure of stepping in to play Beth for 1 night of a local production and it was such a fantastic experience. Jo is a dream role 🙌

The imagery of decorating the Christmas tree was beautifully directed. You see Adam on his knees looking up at his parents with the expression of a wide eyed child, filled with joy and wonderment at the magic of Christmas. Looking up to his parents in anticipation of putting the Angel on top of the tree… and then there’s a close up of his mother singing [paraphrasing] 🎶”Maybe I didn’t love you🎶, quite as often as I should have. 🎶Maybe I didn’t hold you🎶all those cold and lonely nights🎶” Those lyrics are haunting. The thoughts of a dead mother who realizes she didn’t do her best at getting to know her child. She feels the devastating regret that she knows she will never be able to repair. To me, one of the most devastating scenes is after Adam finds Harry’s body and then Harry discovers he is dead. He had to ask, “I’m in there, aren’t I?” He didn’t want Adam to see him as he was when he died. “WHY DIDN’T ANYBODY FIND ME?!” This my heart implode. Harry tells him, “you are not in there. You are IN HERE (my heart.) With me.” Then he tells Harry, let go up to my apartment. To me, this is a metaphor of “let’s go up to his version of Heaven.” They are in Adam’s bed and Harry relaxed his body into the same position that his body was in when he physically died, and released his last breath. Then Harry comfortably releases his soul into the universe. This is where conjecture comes in… Is Adam dead, too? It is possible that Adam died the night that he took ketamine (and maybe too much) at the bar with Harry. That was a BIG trip he went on and we know that drug is deadly, especially in too large of a quantity, mixed with alcohol. It’s a horse tranquilizer… so… ???? They are both swept up into the universe as a binary system. Always together. But then, what do I know?! 😊

Yes that Christmas scene is so fantastic! And there is so much to speculate on the ending and I love how it is up to interpretation.

We had to read it in high school.. and I made the mistake of reading the end during class... First book that ever made me cry. Also, idk what I was expecting but that ending was not even in the realm of possibilities in my mind, which made it even more traumatic. It will always be one of my favorite books.

So a few things I did not like about this video is when you constantly call a monkey an ape and an ape a monkey, they are not the same, simple differentiator factors are monkeys are small and have tails while apes are big and do not have tails. It would be like saying that a tiger and a caracal are related just because they're superfamily mostly known as cats. Yes humans are apes and apes and monkeys are in the Hominoidea superfamily but monkeys and apes are different in family, subfamily, tribe and genus. The similarities end at superfamily but everything else is different same to a caracal and a tiger.

I have read all 4 books in the Practical Magic saga. I agree, the 1st book (I mean 1st published, not the order of events) could have been soooo much more. Not a bad book, but SO different from the movie and other books. My least favorite. On the other side, the movie is a master piece. I have the feeling that the author saw how the public received the movie and changed her way of telling the story. Even the way she writes after that is completely different, almost like another person. The other 3 books are way better, I think you'll like them. The precuel is good. It is more historical fiction and has witchcraft. Then comes the book about the lives of the aunts, the Rules of Magic. This one is by far my favorite. It broke me. It is so heartwarming and yet so sad. Grab the tissues! Then, the last book, which would come after the movie... It felt a little rushed. It is more on the adventure side. But it was fun.

Laura I had that exact opinion about young Amy in the 2019 version...she just didn't look young enough and the acting came across as forced because of it. What a great job you did with this! I don't know how you keep it all straight!!! Loved it. It's difficult for me to choose between the two movies. There are elements to both which I love - but the film score in the 94 version is just so beautiful and immersive. I feel transported a little more in '94 than in 2019. Also that opening scene just gets me, and the transition with Jo on the stairs from Part 1 to Part 2. I just love movie music. I almost always predict Oscar winners based on score actually! That is so cool that you are related! Well done with this! Brava!!!

It’s the 1994 film for me, didn’t care about the non-linear structure of the 2019 film. I felt more emotionally attached watching the girls together and their relationships in the first half and seeing it contrast in the second half when they go their separate ways. Also I love cast the most, Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst were perfect but also the incredibly underrated Trini Alvarado as Meg.

@@WhytheBookWins yeah if memory serves she does get a couple published but decided to stop because it would've meant spending signifcant time away from "the boys" and her husband. In Little men Jo is running a sort of boys Orphange (although her nieces do live there as well at times) for poor boy orphans who either are down on their luck or have no where to go and the main boy Nate is an street musician orphan who's sent there by Laurie after his father died.

I thought the alien was a series of clones. I didn’t get the meat being sent back to the home planet part. I thought she was a vampire eating souls or something. Actually looking at the Wikipedia page, it says the director used the myth of the Baobhan sith as inspiration, so the vampire imagery makes sense, as does the blood. I thought the motorcycle guy was her servant. Like he was in charge of reincarnating her body if she was a vampire or spirit (fairy) of some kind. Oddly enough, the Baobhan sith is referenced as a influence on AHS: Delicate as well.

It is cheaper to eat as a vegetarian as opposed to a meat eater. That is why poorer families have “meatless Mondays” and the like. Especially now with groceries being a lot more expensive. I notice meat has probably gone up a 1/3 in price but veggies, nuts and legumes have gone up about a 1/10. So, really, poor people can take a stand for animal rights and climate change and also save money by making a meatless budget. I know, I have been poor. :)

Great intro to your channel for me! Hell of story too and I agree with you. This movie should exist for what it can teach people, the book for what it should show about the formation of the FBI, but also a Mollie perspective should exist, or at least a story about this written by an Osage to really give insight to cultural and rippling impact effects to them then and in the present. I'm sure one will eventually come out and that will be a wild story as well.

I'm curious, did Greta Gerwig think the March sisters were raised in a barn? All four, except for Beth, acted like it! I had a similar issue with the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, where the Bennet family appeared to live in a barn for some reason. They were still genteel in the book, with an army of servants. The March sisters still had a maid! This adaptation doesn't compare to the 1994 version.

Great review, Laura! I am definitely one of the Beths in the world, and your description of her seems very spot-on 😆 but I also got a bit of Jo in me as well, and that's kinda what I think is the story's biggest strengths. It's been a while since I've seen the film (never read the book), but from hearing you go through the story again, I do like how each of the girls have such a distinctive personality that anyone could see a part of themselves in these characters, leading to representation in a lot of ways. Hi Laura! I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation! I especially enjoyed your thoughts about Amy. I never thought about her in the ways that you brought up, but very true about her wisdom and strength of character. I did feel Beth's strength of personality shone in that scene by the seashore with Jo, which I was happy to see included in the 2019 version (its not in the Winona Ryder). Actually, my favorite line in the book - the most memorable- comes from Beth - the "I'll be lonely for you, even in heaven" line. That one just gets me. I also think its interesting to note that Beth is the only sister that keeps her own name when transferred from real life to the page. I think perhaps Louisa had a hard time writing about her. (I also discovered that in real life Beth Alcott actually had the makings of a botanist and kept extensive field notes- she was kind of the scientist of the family). I think you did a terrific job on this video and I cannot wait to see your Book vs Movie Little Women Part 2!

@@WhytheBookWins Yes I think I read that info on Beth on the Orchard House website when I was researching the illustrated versions. But this is all from memory...I need a refresher! So many interesting things to learn about this book and the family it relates to!
