The story tells follows Paul Atreides as he and his family relocate to the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe. In a story that explores the complex and multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, the fate of Paul, his family, his new planet and its native inhabitants, as well as the Padishah Emperor, the powerful Spacing Guild, and the secretive female order of the Bene Gesserit, are all drawn together into a confrontation that will change the course of humanity.

I had to watch Blade Runner 2049 again because Denis Villenueve does such an awesome job with these scifi flicks. The writing, design, art & soundtrack are so incredible you can almost feel the culture of it. My only gripe, and it's small, is the visions seemed to happen too often and were too long, like every time the story/movie moved forward we had to dive back into another vision of Zandaya. I read the original books so I get it. Maybe I'll feel differently after watching it a few more times. Timothée Chalamet also did a much better job as Paul Atreides than I expected as well.

The sound design of this movie absolutely deserves an Oscar. Too bad some people won't ever hear it. I did a rewatch at home, and was shocked by how much of the sound was missing. When I watched on a normal TV, the 'Voice' was non-existent. It wasn't until I switched to my home theater setup with subwoofer that I could hear it. Even then, it was underwhelming. Also, the scene with the Baron and the Mother talking in the silence... there was a distinct muted hum that didn't show up at home.

But the thing that physically hurt me most as an Egyptian is her pronunciation of "Mahdi," that was a dead giveaway that she isn't Fremen lol unless that word has evolved over the millennia before Dune. But it's supposed to be pronounced more like "meh - dee" (with an actually existent h sound), whereas she does that thing that American accents do to so many languages where it's all "aWww," so she says "mAWdee" and I just can't lol Im referring to her line btw where she's talking to Paul at the end and she's like "I don't believe you're the mAWdee" (mahdi being like the prophetic hero) Bonus fact, "lisan al ghaib" (the title the Fremen have for Paul) translates literally to something like "Tongue of the Absentee"

The music in this really was outstanding. It wasn’t just in the background, either. Like the bagpipes the soldier played in the movie when they landed was played as part of the soundtrack later. Jamis declaring to fight Jessica's champion and eventual death leads Paul to prove his worth and Stilgar to accept Paul as one of his own. @Marko Polo I feel like the people who call it boring don’t really appreciate movies that make them think too much. They have short attention spans so they need lots of fighting, lots of comedic relief, and a lot of dialogue to help them understand everything. @@dwightsimmons99 The movie from the 80's was a David Lynch film. Lynch is known for making movies and tv shows that come across as drug inspired and hard to follow. The Lynch film of Dune is the least accurate to the books of any Dune version to date. The SciFi Channel made a mini series that follows the original source material pretty well. The first book is covered in about 5 hours. I personally liked it a lot. A legitimate criticism of it would be that it had poor costumes, obvious backdrops and a much lower budget than this newest version. The 80's version can be streamed from HBOmax. Instead of thinking of it as “alternate timelines”, I saw it as Paul not knowing how to properly interpret what was coming to him. I’ve read the books and I agree with you. He could hear the Bene Jesserit training rising up in genetic memory urging him to choose their path-the path to him being the Kwisatz Haderach. When he makes the choice to kill Jamis, he is essentially choosing his own path: the golden path; the j*had of Muad’Dib; the chance to become Cheney’s Usul. All of this is never explicitly said in the books but the tensions are there. I love the way Denis so masterfully captured all the nuance and tension in one scene. Incredible.

@@kabonase I've been seeing this a lot. Paul did not have access to previous memories, like the bene gessert and Leto 2. Paul through higher dimensional thinking and bridging space-time with his mind, could see past, future, and what he called the "now". His mind was a super computer and fully unlocked when he took the water of life. His Son Leto 2, had ALL ancestral memory and Paul's ability to bridge space-time. His trial was mass consumption of spice and finding inner control through a dominant conciousness in the past. The movie is playing losly with Paul's ancestral memories. 6:38 Funny thing is, that Bene Geseret woman that tested Paul appeared to think the fact that he was seeing futures that didn't turn out exactly as he saw them meant that his ability was underdeveloped. She said, "If he is The One, he has a long way to go. His sight is *barely* awakened and now he goes into that fire." It actually seems to mean that it was much stronger than what she was expecting. He can see the multiverse, not just one piddling universe. He can choose his path.

I read a comment elsewhere that while Paul was kneeling at the foot of the Harvester he said "I recognize your footsteps, I hear you coming old man" where we thought he was talking about Hallek (as he said during fighting practice) but he was also referring to Shai-Hulud, the worm, also known as the old man of the desert. I thought this was a cool easter egg that I didn't pick up on before.

A couple more Easter eggs: 1) my daughter actually caught this one - Oscar Isaac saying, "I always wanted to be a pilot." Nice tie-in to his Poe Dameron character. 2) The score's semi-homage to the 1984 version. I definitely heard this when Jessica and Paul first ventured out into the desert after putting on their stillsuits.

Wouldn't it have been smart if they filmed DUNE like the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy ? Film all 3 films at same time and just release them12 months apart? That way they are able to hype things up and keep their fan base strong. Too much time between sequels usually ends up with fans losing interest in the franchise as a whole. We are in an information age society and that means a right now society. That meaning fans are more impatient than every when it comes to movies and shows.

Jason Momoa had a much bigger and more impressive role in this version than Richard Jordan did in the 1984 version. Duncan Idaho is the only character that appears in all of Frank Herbert's Dune novels. One correction, gholas had no memory of their past lives. The first ghola to recover memories of his past life was the first Duncan Ghola. Spoilers for Dune Messiah, but the Tleilaxu who created the ghola hypnotically programmed him to Kill Paul. But because Duncan had loved Paul, the emotional conflict released the memories of his past life. It has been a very long time since I read the Dune novels, but it always seemed to me that Frank Herbert intended 2 trilogies, with a single in between book (God Emperor of Dune) to act as a bridge. But Herbert died before he could conclude the series. The 6th book ended on kind of a cliffhanger. His son Brian wrote 2 sequels based on his father's notes that (in my opinion) weren't very good. But at least I found out how the story ended. More spoilers for the sequels. The reason that God Emperor was in my opinion a bridge novel is because it covers the life of Paul's son Leto II who lived for more than 3 millenia. At the end of Children of Dune, Leto turns himself into a human/sandworm hybrid and rules as God Emperor. He would always have a Duncan ghola serving him. He would frequently become angry and kill his Duncan but immediately order a new one. In the sequels to God Emperor which take place thousands of years after Leto's death a Duncan is created with the genetic memory of every Duncan ghola, making him in a sense the longest lived character in the saga.

Good video. I think you're almost right about the Sardaukar. They're SUPPOSED to be the best fighters in the universe. But the reason the emperor wants the Atreides wiped out is because they were secretly training an army that was on par with, if not slightly better than, the Sardaukar. The Atreides also discover that the Fremen are actually better fighters than the Sardaukar when a bunch of their women and children beat the crap out of them. Paul defeating Jamis is a manifestation of the superior Atreides training, which easily bested somebody who is better than Sardaukar. Same with Duncan mowing down Sardaukar as if they were children. Nobody is supposed to be able to defeat Sardaukar one on one. So this becomes massive problem for the emperor.

In the books Paul can see alternative futures but there are places he can't see...the outcome of the fight with Jamis is one of the things he can't see. While gholas retain the memories of the original person, they are down deep, they don't actually remember them...that is something new that Paul awakens in the Duncan Idaho ghola. The first Duncan Idaho ghola appears in the second book, Dune Messiah. Vladamir Harkonnen was raised to be Baron ahead of his half brother because the half brother was considered to be too mild.

There's a fun editing mistake I noticed just recently, after Duncan was stabbed in the chest by the Sardaukar and then got back up to take out the sword and shouted... you could actually see that 2 of the Sardaukar weren't wearing helmets but then when the camera angle changed they were wearing helmets again

Be careful. Dune is written quite terribly. The story is great, but the presentation is a mess. It jumps all around the place, it's unfocused and all the characters are all one-dimensional. Frank Herbert is a great worldbuilder, but a horrible storyteller.

I loved this movie so much. I watched the old movie and fell in love it lead me to listen to the audiobook n I enjoyed it even more! So to have these two references I thought it was the perfect blend of the two. It definitely followed more closely to the book tho. I loved the pacing , the silence, the rightful drawn out moments. It’s definitely one of my favorite movie now.

I’ve only read the first novel and not yet gotten to any of the sequels, so I may not have learned this yet. But in the original novel, Paul can see possible futures, but he does not have the ability to see the past. That is a special power his sister gets from being in the womb when Jessica drinks the water of life. Paul’s sister absorbs all the memories of the past Reverend Mothers
