I know it's a few years old at this point, but thanks for this. Haven't had a chance to actually play since it was AD&D back in the day and I've been tapped to DM at my son's elementary school so I'm prepping pre-con character sheets because we won't have time to roll new ones AND teach the game AND play a quick mini quest, so this was a great help.

Me and my sisters got the "essentials kit" cuz we wanted to learn how to play. Now, I understood how to fill out some of it. But when it came to things like proficiencies and WHERE and how to apply them, the book was so unclear on it. And you had to skip around to find the different pages and it was just awful. We are 90% sure we filled out our character sheets wrong. Its really hard to find an in depth, step by step walk thru on how to fill out these sheets. Thats what I need. And tho I realize my numbers would be different because Id choose a different race or class, seeing exactly how someone came to get those numbers and where in the book it shows this, would be so helpful for those of us who are complete morons and just really wanna play this.
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 4 жыл бұрын
Moron is not the right word at all. D&D can be a very hard game to understand if you are not us to rpg games. I do plan on doing a video about the proficiency bonus and where to apply it. I have an ability score video shot and 90% edited, hopefully posting in the next week then I'm moving on to saving throws, skill checks and proficiency.

@FitzTheGame

In the meantime proficiency is added to any skill or weapons you are proficient in(decided by your race, class and background). So if you have proficiency with a skill you add the bonus to that skill, above the base bonus associated with that skill. This explanation probably doesn't help very much, but a video will help clear things up quite a bit, so you can see where and how to apply it.

That's fantastic. I started by DMing, didn't know a thing about how to play and just dove in head first. The fifth edition starter set is a great place to get going. They do a good job of breaking things down for a new DM. There is a lot to learn in the beginning, but just remember the main focus is to have fun and just make a decision on rules if you don't know the answer, thins are very customizable and flexible.

Could anyone explain why there are different types of dice I don’t understand why you need anything apart from the D20
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 4 жыл бұрын
The different types of dice provide a balance for the different areas of gameplay. If you were rolling a d20 for healing and damage rolls you would have the potential to greatly unbalance every fight. Also, it adds flavor and strategy to weapons. It's worth using the larger axe because you get to roll a larger die and have potential to do more damage, and the small dagger is a small slash of d4 damage because it isn't as deadly as a huge axe in the hands of a large barbarian.

Thank you for this video! One thing I still don't understand (having read the 5e player's guide too) is hit dice. I don't understand if these are expendable items. For example on this video the example is a character with 5d8 hit dice. Does that mean once a character has rolled 5 times to heal, they no longer have any dice left and have to earn more? Or does it just mean that every time the character short-rests they are allowed to roll up to 5 times? Thank you!
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. The answer is on page 186 of the players handbook under long rest. When you take a long rest you recover a number of hit die equal to half of your total number of hit die(minimum of 1). So, if you have 4 total hit die and you have used them all on a short rest, when you take a long rest you would recover 2 of your spent hit die. Note: unless told otherwise by the rules or your DM, you usually round down at an odd number. If you have 5 total hit die and you. Take a short rest, you still recover 2 hit die. Note 2: it is your total number of hit die, so if you multiclass and have 2 different classes you regain half of the total from both classes. Note 3: remember to check with your DM if you have any questions. The final choice on how to recover hit dice is up to them. They may use variant rules on recovery.

if ur swaping the numbers around so much, wouldn't it help to laminate the sheet and use erasable pen on them. So you don't end up wearing out that spot on the paper and saves paper longer term too? #newbie question
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. That would totally be acceptable, would save a lot of paper too. You would just need a fine tip pen, some of the boxes are pretty small. Also, don’t erase anything by accident lol. It’s not really all that often that you need to erase a number, mostly just your hit points, which you could track on a separate sheet of you want to maintain the integrity of your sheet. There is a great online tool called D&D Beyond(dndbeyond.com) that would get rid of the paper altogether. It works really well and is always on you if you have a smart phone. It even has virtual dice.

I have a question I just bought an esential kit and that spell casting sheet wasn't included...is the spell casting sheet something I need in that case?
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, the spell casting sheet isn’t something that you “need” to play, technically you don’t need any of the sheets to play. That being said I find the spell casting sheet very handy when playing a casting character, it’s a one stop shop for all your spell casting needs. If you happen to be playing a class that doesn’t have any form of spell casting it you would have zero use for the spell casting sheet, unless you need some scrap paper. If you do want the spell casting sheet you can download free PDFs on the wizards of the coast website (link in the description of this video). There are also alternate versions of the character sheet there as well. Also if you go to the dmsguild.com and search “class name” character sheet(ie: Wizard Character Sheet or Cleric Character Sheet) there are some class focused redesigns of the character sheet that are pretty sweet.

This is correct. Unless you gain magic from somewhere (ie: drow has dancing lights cantrip no matter the class). You really don't need the spell sheet in that case though, you could just make a note on the main sheet if you want.

I bought the starter set and im a high elf wizard... but my passove perception is blank. it should be 13, but there is nothing written.(its a pre generated sheet) what should i do
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 3 жыл бұрын
Great question, I remember seeing a few issues like this in the starters set pre generated sheets. I’ll break it down part by part, for anyone with the same issue in the future. Passive perception is equal to 10 plus your wisdom modifier, and you also add you proficiency bonus if you are proficient with the perception skill. So if you have a 16 or 17 as a base wisdom score(giving you a wisdom modifier of +3), and are not proficient with the perception skill, you are correct in saying your passive perception is 13. Go ahead and put a 13 in the box. It was just an oversight on the part of Wizards of the coast when printing the sheets. Note: just a friendly reminder, the passive perception is more for the DM to use to grant information to players that are observant without having them make a roll. So Wizards of the coast may have left it blank to not confuse new players with another number that has a similar game mechanic as the regular perception check. I hope that answers your question.

This is the currency: CP = copper piece SP = silver piece EP = electrum piece GP = gold piece PP = platinum piece The starting wealth for your class can be found on page 143 of the players handbook. There is also a conversion table. Copper being the base 1 piece. 10 copper = 1 silver 5 silver = 1 electrum 2 electrum = 1 gold 10 gold = 1 platinum The table breaks down the whole list of conversions.

The spell sheet let’s you keep track of your spells, spell save dc, spell attack bonus, and your spell casting stat. You could have all of this on your main sheet but it would get crowded quickly. If you are playing a class without any spell casting ability the other two sheets are kinda useless, unless you are concerned with keeping track of a lot of character information.

Where would I put Monk abilities?
@FitzTheGame
@FitzTheGame 3 жыл бұрын
There isn’t a specific area set for Monk abilities. I would normally place the under the “Features and Traits” section on the first page. That being said, you are free to place the anywhere you want on any other sheet as well. You could use a spell sheet to keep track of the abilities as you level up. Alternatively, and probably a much better option, you can download a Monk specific character sheet from the Dmsguild.com. Emmet Byrne has a great character sheet available at a pay what you want price. There are class specific sheets for all classes that rearrange the character sheet to fit the specific skills of your class.

Ah, is there one area that is giving you trouble? I do have more videos planned explaining the process, I've just been putting it off for far too long because of other things that have been going on. If I can help in anyway let me know.
