the displacer beast only has 13 ac with 85 hp. It''s displacement ability is countered by grappling it.

@@justnoob8141 Minotaurs exist in the Forgotten Realms too. My comment was because in D&D Minotaurs have an innate ability to never get confused by mazes (which is an obvious homage from the original legend of the Greek Minotaur, although amusingly the whole idea of the Labyrinth was that it was supposed to be so fiendishly complex that the Minotaur would never be able to find its way out).

Did anyone else see who else was/ is in that arena!? To the Thieves' left, even. They were/ are the grown up( somewhat) version of the characters from the Original Dungeons&Dragons animated cartoon series: Presto, Bobby, Eric, Hank ( you can see his rediculously bright, yellow hair, even), etc!

Not really tho. "Officially" they can just offset their position slightly (3') to be harder to hit, not make an independent illusion of themselves.

Yes, the displacer beast get his name precisely because his image only is displaced a bit from his real position, not projects his image as a hologram from his tendrils.

@@ChristianCamposAlvarado Not true though, at least in 5e. Its official stats block says that "This monstrous predator takes its name from its ability to displace light so that it appears to be several feet away from its actual location." So this does fit into that description.

I think they'll be fine. It looks like the group on the other side is meant to get killed off one by one to show the threats of the maze, it would be redundant to have the cameo group serve the same purpose. Edit: After watching the movie, I'm even more sure that they're fine. Look at what our movie protagonists did from their perspective. Suddenly showed up, said something that didn't immediately make any sense, and then disappeared. Who else did that? Dungeon Master. Cameo group always figures out what to do after being given a weird hint by Dungeon Master. They will definitely be fine.

He doesn't exist in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. Edit: What I mean is, Dungeon Master and Bobby's pet unicorn Umi did not follow them into the Forgotten Realms, probably because they can't. The Realm, the name of the D&D world they were in during the 80's animated series, is not the same as the Forgotten Realms, there is more than one world in the D&D multiverse.

The moment I saw the Displacer Beast's tentacles, I felt a chill down my spine and thought "Oh no..." Such an excellent portrayal of a classic monster. I especially like how they showed how it creates an illusion. I always pictured it as something about its fur or skin bent light in a weird way to make it appear like it's somewhere slightly further away, but I never thought of the tentacles being projectors it used actively. What a great movie.

The truth is those kids have journeyed through more than one D&D universe trying to find a way back to Earth (The show you grew up with where they started their journey from is set in The Realms, a completely different D&D universe), and this movie is set in the Forgotten Realms, the exact same D&D universe as the Baldur's Gate games, R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books and so on.

Yes I'm aware that they traveled into other realms but however I have never seen them in the Forgotten Realms. Which is why I said that it's great to see them in this movie.

@@AAX1975 I just want to make sure there are no misunderstanding between us. Their appearance in the Forgotten Realms is very interesting to be honest. Few to none (mostly none) know this, but the last time they appeared was in a single comic book way back in January 1996 called "The Grand Tour", and that comic book is set 100 years before this movie, which implies that they time traveled at some point.

A show has more time to develop characters than a movie, and I'll let a real psychologist explain the importance of old memories, so no it's not bad or odd to care more about the treasured memory characters than the team that will never have more than 2 hours of screen time.

I enjoy most of Chris Pine’s movies so I will go watch this when it comes out, what with it looking very Thor: Ragnorak / Potter-esque. I am not a D&D player at all, but the really positive and enthusiastic comments here by folks that are make me even more hyped for this!

Just learned this from Reddit. The Dwarf that gets killed towards the end from the displacer beast is Tom Morello (guitarist of Rage Against The Machine). He's a huge DnD player.

Here's my theory: Forge is actually a player character went rogue (no pun intended). The others couldn't come gaming for months (hence the 2 years timeskip during the reunion) while Forge kept playing and leveling. Then when the party was about to get together again, the DM came up with the idea of making him an antagonist, using all the dodgy bits of their capture and allying him with the main villain.
