Dunkelweizen Brewer's Best Kit Beer Taste Test - After all that... Would we Drink it? I gave this kit's instructions a hard time, somewhat deservedly, but in the end, how was the beer? I mean, would I recommend this? Would a new brewer be able to do it? Would a seasoned brewer want to bother? Find out the answers to these questions and more.

Really liked your review, I recently made an all grain Munich Dunkel that was surprisingly strange to drink. I think we may be on the same wavelength with these german beers. I love stouts and porters but this was so different. It will take a few months to drink it all. I gave samples out to friends and a local club. The friends said not so good, the club said true to style. Keep making those videos, you two make me laugh and encourage me to brew different.

The weak finish is because it's a Weizen. Wheat based beers tend to be crisp and fleeting in flavor. From what you describe, it sounds like it came out exactly as it was supposed to.

I'm glad to see this one turned out so well, although I do observe that there wasn't much space left for error by merit of the instructions. Personally, I've never done a kit brew simply on account of having never done a proper beer at all - My first true one is currently being aged, it's a dark wheat beer made through the traditional south-german practices. The recipe is my own, however; 51% Dark Wheat Malt, 32% Abbey, 14% Viennese and 3% Acidulated. For hops, a trivial amount of german Tettnanger for bitterness and Hersbrucker for vague aroma. I also made a small beer from the same mash, but unfortunately those turned into bottle-geysers after a week of carbonation for some reason. 1.2 gallons of finished beer shouldn't turn into a gushy mess from 2.5 oz of brown sugar, but I may be wrong.

Also I think doing a beer kit of the month or two months would be something interesting. A lot of people who want to try brewing try with beer first I find and they start with kits. Doing different reviews for different kits maybe a cool idea. Plus to see Brian criticize directions is also entertaining!

I think beer kits are great. They introduce people to brewing. I would never have tried brewing a beer without that kit I tried. Most of them make things easy and foolprove. I was a little bit stupid with my first beer since it was a kit for a Hefeweizen. Imho a Hefeweizen is one of the most complicated brews actually. But I was very proud of my first result. And since then I am brewing very often. I got hooked ;) ... Why are there not any easy mead brewing kits. I am sure more people would try brewing a mead if there was an easy kit. I watched about 20 videos on mead actually most on this channel before I tried brewing my own mead. Sure after brewing a few kits you will always find out that it is cheaper and much better creating your own recipes, But there has to be an easy starting point.

I only brew beer from kits. I'm not really a big beer drinker, but I like the process. Not enough to drop a ton of money and time into doing full grain brewing, but a kit satisfies the urge and gives me some beer to grab on occasion and chill.
@geekUGH2
@geekUGH2 4 жыл бұрын
@@Pinion512 My first kit was a "full grain" kit even. It was with all the equipment included (glass bottle for fermentation, sieve for lautering, themometer ... ) ... even bottles and a bottlecapper for about 120 Euros for about 1gal. I was not that expensive and I am still using some of the equipment. I switched to 3 gal brews now which is fairly enough for one brew for me.

** Vinegar question: How to prevent vinegar with fruit wines? I make apple cider, and other fruit wines. After opening a bottle, we drink it over about a week but sometimes it sits for 2 or 3 weeks if we travel between opening and finishing. What can I do to prevent vinegar, (other tan sanitation). I understand the formation of vinegar from the (hard to spell) bacteria AND reducing oxygenation, headspace etc. I am thinking that if I pasteurize the batch, then back sweeten it after may help shelf life. What do you do? Thanks! James from the deep woods in Alaska.

Oh, I also forgot to ask if you are aware of any fruits which can't be fermented due to antibacterial properties? James From deep in the woods in Alaska
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 4 жыл бұрын
All fruit will ferment that I am aware of. Vinegar forms when alcohol and oxygen come together, as the natrual acetobactors are ‘awakened’ at that point. It normally takes months to happen. Maybe put opened bottle in the fridge? Never had it happen in just a week or teo.

If you made it again would you still add the maltodextrin? I made a "milk stout" kit as my first brew, and even though I only added half of the lactose it still tasted way too sweet.

IPA isnt named because it could make a trip to India its name comes from the East India Trading Company
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 4 жыл бұрын
Actually... George Hodgson, a London brewer in the late 1700s, used his connections to the East India Co. to dominate the export market to the colony (India). Among other beers, Hodgson exported a strong pale ale. It was probably brewed with extra additions of hops and at higher alcohol levels, both of which act as preservatives. The long voyage transformed the beer into a wonderful drink. But Hodgson overreached, and that opened the door to the brewers of Burton-on-Trent, in the English Midlands. The pale ale coming from the Trent valley tasted far better than London brews, because its hard water produced a brighter ale-one with a pleasant and refreshing hop character. So it's named due to being able to make the trip by someone who worked for the East India Company, not named after the company.
