Have used DuraCoat on several firearms and the finish and durability is amazing. I haven't tried the DuraBlue, but will soon on an AK build. I have no doubt that it will be as easy as the DuraCoat. I have seen the product on a couple rifles and it looks great.

I like how smooth the finish is, I have to wonder if this would work on a motorcycle gas tank as bluing a tank is something I've had interest in before. It looks like it would be far thinner than powder coating for other parts as well, just have to have a lot of things ready to be painted for the project as the epoxy pain doesn't last long after being mixed.

If you have a firearm with decorative engravings will this spray fill in the engraving or is it thin enough that engravings will be safe?
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 6 жыл бұрын
DuraBlue is a relatively thin coating. With engravings, you will need to assess your specific firearm as the depth of engravings can vary. As long as the engravings are in good condition and were performed at a decent depth (not worn and shallow) and the DuraBlue is applied properly, then the DuraBlue shouldn't fill in the engravings.

The OP did a good job on this wheel gun. However it can be done better. At the very end of the video the orange peel effect is visible. The way to avoid it is to use a heat gun while applying, and bake the finish when done. Its the same technique Brownells shows for applying Alumahyde II. After prepping the gun and right before its sprayed, you heat the metal with a heat gun. Get it very warm then dust on the first coat. When done with that, heat the gun again and wait the 10 minutes like they say, doing the same heating with each coat. When done spraying, bake the gun in any oven, at 180 but no more then 200° F for 2 to 3 hours. i have done it this way with Durakote and Alumahyde on several guns and all of them came out near perfect.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for using our products and for your comments! The orange peel effect that you are seeing is actually light reflecting off of the imperfections/metal work markings in the surface of the metal. The DuraBlue coating itself did not orange peel. Also, we do not recommend heating parts before coating with our products. Clean, shop air can be blown on the surface of the parts in between layers in order to speed up the flashing off of the solvents, but heat is not needed. If a heat gun is used in between layers, the heat gun should only be used on metal parts and at a low temperature. Metal parts can be baked once coating is complete in order to speed up the initial dry time. We recommend baking at 110 degrees Fahrenheit for 90 minutes or 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. Parts should only be baked in an oven used exclusively for coatings. Parts should not be baked in an oven that is also used for food.

What are the "environmental conditions" that effect how long you have to use the product once the catalyst has been activated, and how do they effect it...ie, keep it cool? keep it warm? Is there any effect on the quality of the finish? I'm getting ready to spray three pistols and two rifle barrels.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 8 жыл бұрын
+ytubepuppy The new and improved DuraCoat and DuraBlue Aerosol cans last up to four weeks depending upon a number of environmental factors. These factors include: location, elevation, temperature, humidity, dew point, etc. These factors will affect how long the can lasts after activation. A can in a warm, humid environment will not last as long as one in a cool, dry environment. Once activated, the coating is immediately beginning to cure and the can will eventually become unusable. When it first begins to go bad, it will not spray evenly or nicely (ex: can will sputter and spray chunks of coating) and eventually it will simply not spray at all. The can should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry place at all times when not in use. That includes both before and after activation. As long as the can is properly spraying the coating in a nice, smooth, even manner then the quality of the finish is fine. The quality of the finish is only affected when the can begins to spray the coating poorly.

I'll be purchasing the black/blue DuraBlue for my shotgun restoration but I need an experienced opinion. The stock and forend of my shotgun will be finished in satin so what finish would you suggest for the barrels, I don't think I should go too glossy but I don't think matte would look right with satin finished wood. Is there a sort of in between. Thanks
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Stone In order to achieve a satin sheen on the DuraBlue, we recommend applying the Polished DuraBlue and then applying a top coat of DuraCoat Satin Clear. This should pair well with the satin finish on the stock and forend. The DuraCoat Satin Clear is available in both an aerosol and a liquid form for use with spray equipment.

I'm wanting to use DuraBlue on a pre-war Browning A5. My question is will the various engravings and proofmarks still be clearly visible?
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 8 жыл бұрын
+Richard Mosely DuraBlue should not fill in standard markings on a firearm, if applied correctly. The results you experience on your firearm could vary though depending upon how deep the engravings and markings are and the condition they are in. Since you have a pre-war Browning A5, and they tend to have shallow engravings and markings, there could be issues with engravings and markings being filled in.

So, are you supposed to remove all the bluing from the gun prior to applying this? Because, beginning at 3:23, I see a revolver that has had its bluing completely removed. Also, how thick is this material? Is it thicker than actual bluing (~.0001)? How does it wear in comparison? I have an old Marlin 101 that needs its receiver & barrel re-blued. The barrel is mostly good, actually, and that's on a 50+ year-old rifle that has seen a lot of use.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 6 жыл бұрын
There is no need to completely remove the bluing prior to applying the DuraBlue, though it is completely fine if you do. In fact, during surface preparation, most or perhaps even all of the bluing may come off just due to the cleaning and roughing up of the surface. That is what occurred on the project in this video. The cleaning and scuffing of the surface ended up removing basically all of the bluing. DuraBlue has an ideal applied thickness of about 1 mil. DuraBlue has excellent corrosion resistance (without the need to oil the DuraBlue surface) and impact and abrasion resistance. It is much more durable than standard, traditional bluing and should last much longer on your firearm.

Yes, DuraBlue works great on stainless steel! We offer our DuraBlue in two different sheens (Matte and Polished) and each of those in three different colors (Blue, Blue/Black, and Black). Keep in mind though that because bluing can vary greatly in color our DuraBlue will most likely not match your blued barrel perfectly.

How thick is each coat? Does the new finish effect the dimensions/interaction of parts?
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 5 жыл бұрын
We recommend 3-4 layers for a total of 0.5-1.5 mils. You can vary the thickness for high wear or tight fitting areas. It will not affect the tolerances on the vast majority of firearms. You would only need to be concerned if you had a custom built firearm that was very tight.

Hi, very impressed with the results you got on the present video and the others you made. I tried many times to re-blue a pistol but ended with very bad results even if I followed all the manufaturer's instructions for the product. I sent an email to the manufacturer and they didn't answered......Anyway, my question is: when using the spray Durable can, should I reverse the can and blow it for a few seconds between each coat, to clear the nozel as we do with regular spray paint cans? I should receive my spray Durablue/Durastrip kit very soon and can't wait for the spray day. Thanks for the videos.

Ok here is a question, I have a build with an alloy frame and steel slide, the slide has a very poor black parker style finish. Will this product make the dis-similar metals match if slide is just surfaced prepped, or do they need to be stripped to bare medal?
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 8 жыл бұрын
+chi uhauha The two surfaces will look the same after being DuraBlued. Simply prepare both parts for coating per the basic surface preparation procedures and proceed to DuraBlue. If the Parkerized slide is in very poor condition, then it may be best to blast the surface (and therefore the surfaces of both parts) with 120 grit aluminum oxide.

2 questions: Do you use this product on all internal parts i.e. sears and trigger assemblies with close tolerances? When asked about the shotgun at the beginning of the video, 7 months ago you said it was "polished blue", but 3 years ago you said it was "blue". Which is it? If so , does "blue" look more like a parkerized finish rather than glossy? Both are nice colors but the shotgun is more like what I want to use on my 1911.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 6 жыл бұрын
DuraBlue can be used on internal surfaces of parts, if you so choose. Never spray any DuraBlue inside of the barrel however. DuraBlue is a rather thin coating designed specifically for use on firearms. However, when dealing with very tight tolerances, you may need to apply less DuraBlue on those surfaces or mask those surfaces off and not coat them. We do not recommend coating very small, internal parts such as sears and trigger assemblies and typically there would be no need to coat these small parts anyways. The "Polished Blue" mentioned 7 months ago and the "Blue" mentioned 3 years ago are the same color. That color is Polished Blue. That is the sheen and color of the shotgun. When we originally released DuraBlue about 4 years ago there was only one sheen option available, which was Polished. Later on, we released the Matte sheen option, so the color names now indicate the sheen as well. DuraBlue is available in two different sheens (Polished or Matte) and three different colors (Blue, Blue/Black, or Black). They can all be viewed on our website here: www.duracoatfirearmfinishes.com/collections/durablue/products/durablue.

This is perfect for me! I am going to try this instead of paying a gunsmith to do it for me. I was given a Ruger GP100 that sat in a the bottom of a cabinet that was filled with soot saturated water after a house fire. The gun has places where the bluing came off and it rusted on the frame in a couple of places. Did you remove the firing pin assembly in the frame or leave it in for the spraying process?
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your interest in our DuraBlue! Yes, we removed the firing pin assembly before coating. When completing a project, you will want to disassemble the firearm as far as you feel comfortable. If you are not comfortable disassembling and reassembling the firing pin assembly, then you will need to mask off that area before coating. Also, make sure that all rust is removed from the surface of the parts during the surface preparation process before coating.

Can this product be used on a 1911 that is parkerized using the same procedures. My concern is where the slide and frame meet the railing. Will it rub off. My intentions would be not to use the pistol for the three to four week period, as to let it completely cure before use. Which size can should I order to completely cover the frame and slide. +bison uberti Yes, you can use the same procedures as the video. DuraBlue was formulated out of DuraCoat, so it has the same durability properties that DuraCoat is known for. When applied properly, DuraBlue has excellent abrasion resistance and should last a very long time before any wear begins to occur. We only offer one size of aerosol can at this time and that size will be more than enough to coat your slide and frame. Barrel plugs can be purchased from us separately.

I'm relatively new to firearms, more specifically rebluing. I have a few guns that maybe could do with a new bluing, problem is, I'm not expert and don't feel comfortable totally disassembling them then reassembling them, my other problem is, I live in England and gunstores and gunsmiths aren't that easy to find. So my question is. Can I use dura-blue but keep my gun relatively in one piece? I can remove the grip, maybe remove the cylinder, if need be I'll put something around the exposed grip to protect the internals.

@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 6 жыл бұрын
DuraBlue or DuraCoat will protect against further rust. However, all the existing rust must be completely removed before coating or the rust will continue to grow and eventually cause a coating failure. Also, if you are interested, we offer a product called DuraFil that can be used before DuraBlue or DuraCoat to fill in the pitting and make the surface look new again. DuraFil can be found on our new website here: www.duracoatfirearmfinishes.com/products/durafil-surface-filler.

I have an Uberti 45 long colt single action and it is only a couple of years old. The bluing is flaking off and has allowed some oxidation to form even some small pitting has shown. The cylinder has several big flaking areas. Can your product restore it to a more presentable state? what needs to be done to prep the these areas for bluing? I have used some fine steel wool and have kept the steel oiled to stop the progression of flaking and rusting.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, DuraBlue will look wonderful on your revolver! Is the bluing simply wearing off or is it flaking? Traditional bluing simply wears off in areas and doesn't tend to flake off. Once we determine exactly what type of finish is on your revolver, then we can recommend steps for surface preparation.
@cornflake73
@cornflake73 7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't look like it is wearing off to me. it looks like flaking off because the bluing seems to have an edge to it as opposed to fading smoothly to the steel.
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 7 жыл бұрын
Traditional bluing tends to wear off smoothly to the steel as opposed to the flaking that you are describing. Are you sure that the firearm is blued? Is there a possibility that it has some other type of finish or plating on it? Perhaps you could contact Uberti and see if they are able to tell you how your firearm was finished. The type of finish that is on your firearm will affect how you need to prepare the surface for coating with DuraBlue.

Do you need to remove the original finish off the gun before applying the dura blue coating
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 7 жыл бұрын
That would depend upon what finish is currently on the firearm. If the firearm is currently blued, Parkerized, or anodized, then the finish does not need to be completely removed. The surface preparation steps for DuraBlue still need to be followed and any rust/corrosion needs to be completely removed however. In general and for best results, any other type of finish should be removed from the firearm before coating with DuraBlue.

Can you take your old bluing off prior to using this application
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes
@DuraCoatFirearmFinishes 6 жыл бұрын
You could remove the current bluing before applying DuraBlue or you can apply DuraBlue over your existing bluing if it is in good condition (i.e. free of rust). Bluing acts as a good base for DuraBlue, so it is up to you if you'd like to remove it prior to applying DuraBlue or not. Either way though, you will still need to perform proper surface preparation prior to applying DuraBlue.

+Mikhail Faustin In that case, the Parkerizing does not need to be removed and the DuraBlue can be applied right over the top. We recommend the following surface preparation steps: 1) Disassemble the firearm as far as you feel comfortable. 2) Degrease the parts using our TruStrip Cleaner/Degreaser. We recommend cleaning using a 3M ScotchBrite pad and TruStrip, so that you can get the surfaces completely clean and slightly rough them up at the same time. 3) Blow off the parts using clean, shop air. 4) Spray with DuraBlue. Also, keep in mind that any rust present on the surface needs to be removed before beginning these steps.

Yes, you can use DuraBlue on your revolver. I read the comments and one of the replies was this from Duracoat - "DuraBlue is a two-part, urethane-based coating that ....." That was quite an eye-opener to realize this is urethane-based. Two part urethane paints require extra special safety considerations, yet the video doesn't show the person spraying at all, nor are any safety issues mentioned. Most of the spraying in the video is being done by spraying toward bare arms, with no mention of safety considerations and apparently no more protection than just rubber gloves. Spraying two part urethane paints is much more hazardous than spraying other paints. Any paint that uses a hardener will contain isocyanates. Isocyanates can be absorbed through the skin and eyes. Wear a disposable suit, head sock, eye protection, gloves and good respirator with adequate ventilation. You really should be wearing a positive airflow forced fresh air system when spraying urethane paints; at the very least an appropriate, properly fitted NIOSH-approved activated charcoal cartridge respirator for very small, occasional jobs.
