@@SRMoore1178 U2 delibaretly chose to make album's like " The Joshua Tree " sound & appeal to what they best knew how the Irish American audience would react to & therefore buy into what they U2 were selling... Even the video for " Where The Streets Have No Name " was a rip off of " The Beatles " final public play together in 1969 ontop of the rooftop of Apple Offices in Savile Row, London, as U2 knew the way into the american market was to sell a version of themselves that was stereotypical of the irish immigrants that came before them to the America's & that type of romanatism of irish culture played a big hand in finally breaking them big time in the American music charts & they delibaretly chose to do videos on the roof top or walking through the streets of America to make them come across as being very grounded & approachable & that alone can do wonders for your image & of course your sales when trying to take their music to another country & how to best sell their music to American sensibilities was very well thought out & executed... Once they got their foot in the door & were successful in America it was always going to be s case of what to do next to make it bigger but predominantly to also go back to playing the music that first got them their recognition as with any business sometimes you have to sellout , for lack of a better word , so you can keep going forward all the while still holding onto you current fan's while bringing in new fans at the same time & U2 have never taken themselves as serious as what the media & certain fan's have & its a fine line that so far has served them well, even if they did do certain album's that weren't as successful or what you'd expect from U2... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy where ever you are in this world... Slainte .....

This is really one of the most amazing documentaries I've ever seen because its not simply the 3 remaining original members of Duran preparing for a world tour but you can see real glimpses of how bitter they felt toward Andy back then, the concern especially in John that their place as #1 group in the world is slipping and the struggle for musical direction that would plague them for many years to come. The music business was so much different back in 1987 vs today. Its a great look at a once invincible group trying to find its way after a 3yr absence in a pre-Napster corporate music world

Susquehanna80 I remember when they came out with "Notorious ", I felt so very proud of the album, but could not believe that no record stations would give them a chance! I truly felt so bad for my Duran Duran! Going to the concert was so amazing, they are consumable musicians in every sense of the word! Now looking back at where they are now, I am still so very proud, impressed, excited, and I can go on and on, but they are simply my Duran Duran, the music of my life!
@rifk17416 жыл бұрын
Well said. Incredibly proud of the guys for surviving that period (RT and AT leaving, ATs shenanigans, record industry change, fandom decline and generally having radio stations and public turn their back on them). Instead of being defeated, they regrouped, became super-tight, focused and determined and went on to produce in a few short months one of the best albums of the decade and their careers. Didn't know all this at the time tho' so my love for them grew 10 fold after seeing 3TGR many years later.

Praise indeed for having the determination to continue as a three piece, and the ambition to create a bold new sound. Skin Trade was, and still is, a triumph. It really deserved to be a commercial success, but at least Duran had the conviction to release the track as the second single. I never tire of listening to it. They were rightly proud of their musical progression, and naturally wanted the wider public to hear the maturity of their song writing.

Although I love this album now I was one of the many who were turned off by the drastic new sound of this album. It was a different band to my teenage ears and I just went elsewhere. Didn’t know this documentary existed
@johnrambo3831 Жыл бұрын
Ehh I remember when they lost Andy and Roger it just seemed to fundamentally change them. With the 5 of them, they were unstoppable, but the band was weakened significantly with only the remaining 3 and a drastic change in sound didn’t help. Arcadia’s ‘So Red The Rose’ was a logical step from ‘Seven and The Ragged Tiger’, but ‘Notorious’ and it’s funk horn sound wasn’t as appealing. John’s bass wasn’t as apparent and Warren’s tasteful guitars weren’t as cool as Andy’s more aggressive and slashing ones. With so much of their core sound changed, they became this yuppie rock band on this album. Then years of being lost in the wilderness followed. I’m happy they’re doing so well today.

John @21:48-21:53 looks so f....HOT, it really, really HURTS!!!! And @29:49-30:23 he looks adorable being all upset about going to the JR show. I want to eat him up! What a beautiful creation. Well done, Mum and Dad. And his smile... it melts my heart. Keep smiling, Johnny Angel. On another note, you can see the struggle they went through managing their career themselves and trying to sell their work to the record labels. It must have been very hard for them to come to the realization that their prime was fading and they weren't the most popular band in the world anymore.... But 33 years after this documentary was filmed they're still alive and kicking ! I don't think they ever imagined being in the business after 40 years. I cant wait to see them in concert again. Had 2nd row tickets in front of John Taylor for the Las Vegas concert earlier this month but it got cancelled. I truly hope they tour again before the end of the year.

I do still wonder and think that when they formed The Power Station was around when Simon got married. Maybe he was busy doing that around the same time. I'm of the opinion that Arcadia was a dry run for DD 2.0, just in case it ended up being Simon, Nick and Roger, and maybe John. As it turned out, Warren could sound a lot like Andy did ("Lake Shore Driving," anyone?)

I was 16 when this doc was made and now two of my three kids are adults too! My how the years pass. What I learned from this doc: Simon is a goofball, John is the coolest guy that ever walked the earth and Nick may be the youngest band member, but he is definitely the most serious even at age 24. I still don't understand how the " Notorious " Album was classed as not being as successful as their first 3 albums... With this album you can clearly hear the band growing & upping their game musically... Notorious is still one of my go to albums to this day but again why it wasn't a bigger hit is beyond me... Maybe Managing themselves & all that entails took too much out of them!.. Main thing is they are still going strong & have continued to prove their detractors wrong... I went to their gig of this tour in Edinburgh, Scotland UK & they played an amazing set that night... Thankfully somehow they have always managed to work things out & keep going & recording... With their last album " Paper Gods " they showed they still have a lot to contribute & that many other artist's want to work with them... .....

I think the problem with Notorious at the time of release 86/87 was that it was neither here nor there . Too sophisticated for the pop world which was becoming Stock, Atkin and Waterman dominated. Not Eurodanceý enough for the clubs where bands like Pet shop Boys, Erasure and New Order had found a place and too optimistic for the Indie/Goth audience listening to Depeche Mode, The Mission and The Smiths

This was always one of my favorite Duran docs. I remember walking by the shelves at the video store and seeing the black and white cover photo of the three of them. "Three To Get Ready? What's this?" Then when I watched it, I thought it was a genuinely interesting look behind the scenes. You can see beneath the surface their nervousness about continuing without two of the original members, and I completely forgot about the Andy stuff toward the beginning. The sad thing is, this album didn't sell. John Taylor says in the Ordinary World doc that after the Notorious tour, they just sort of looked at each other and said, "What happens now??!"

Boy I was such a fan 81-85. Then something happened and I lost my way with DD. Then alternative 90’s happened. I feel like I’m now going to make up for lost time and go through as many years to see everything they struggled through.

OMG. Same here. I adored these guys for the early 80's and then I guess my life just took another turn. However, I did see them on their Future Past tour in Boston a few weeks ago, and I was 20 years old again. Amazing, and this documentary really introduces us to the brilliant and beautiful young men who are and will be forever Duran Duran.

"The thing about Joe is that he really feels that without the Artists, none of us would have jobs." . . What a genius level thought. Even with the fake show of support from the Capitol Records slug who was ultimately the one who pushed them to the back wall. The record companies stopped supporting Duran Duran at the level they did with Rio and 7aTRT after the split and the lower success of Notorious. The crime here is that Notorious was probably one of their best achievements musically and it should have been promoted like crazy. After that they blamed the band for continued falling off sales and then they started pushing in some really sad excuses for bands in their spot. The last laugh is that DD has been able to collect more and more fans from every consecutive generation of listener up to today.....Toad the Wet Sprocket and The rest of that alternatrash is dead and gone.....DD is still here and continues their music legend. Now GET THEM INTO THE HALL OF FAME. or dont, they are bigger than that hall of mediocrity. They can hang out with Iron Maiden and get some of their Wild Boys cred back. Lol

they have created more HITS than any other band

What killed Notorious was the choice of singles after the song Notorious. People were not ready for Skin Trade no matter how much the band believed in the song. Then they sealed the albums fate before they went on tour with the god awful remix of Meet El Presidente. I’ll always say Vertigo should’ve been the second single. It was a terrific song with a great chorus and would’ve made for an epic video on top of it and given the album the legs it’s deserved. Third single could’ve been Hold Me or American Science, both great songs. They really had a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot from this point until the reunion. After the success of The Wedding Album, they follow it up with a covers album? Killed them again. I do agree they should be in the hall of fame and it’s ridiculous they haven’t even been nominated with the success and legendary songs they have.

best scene by far, imo, is the telephone radio ads - highlights including “Norwegian whaling songs and Japanese flower arrangement music”, “Milwaukee life centre needs your blood, so don’t hesitate, just donate!” and “Goodnight… Debbie?” lol

Ah, the cockiness of youth. One of them mentioned David Bowie growing old gracefully and now they are all older than Bowie was at the time.
@JTforeverL4 жыл бұрын
But all DD members are still alive and Bowie is dead. And IMO they never came across as arrogant young men, even when they were the hottest band on the planet. They never bragged about their success, money or the truckload of girls they had in the 80s. They always seemed to be quiet down to earth and almost naïve, to an extent.

@@JTforeverL I just mean that none of us imagine being in our 50s or 60s when we're in our 20s, as they were then.

Lol!! Why were they so into Tuna sandwiches? Maybe that was the “health food” of the time. Actually come to think of it I had tuna on a mini pita bread everyday for lunch then too! Lol!! It’s ridiculous that I love the way John says certain things. “Tuna sandwich”❤️. I especially love the way he says “The Clash” ❤️❤️🤦♀️

I still have my original copy in vhs, what I don't understand about Duran Duran's 1987 tour are some choices, for example the video of the concert, a few pieces when it was a really good show, the choice to release that concert when there was a take professional multicam of the concert held in Milan where the audio is much better and the performance in front of 50 thousand spectators was a kind of event. But it was still a good time. Thanks for sharing the video.
