Adrian Belew has never received his full due, but there are important artists and audiences who do recognize his genius. Maybe, in about a hundred years and just before the human population begins to rapidly decline (thanks climate change denying A-hole), some academic will bring his body of work to the attention of the futures last brightest and best. Imagine Adrian’s music marking the end of human kind. Sad and beautiful.

I know that playing the “if only…” game is unwinnable, but I’m gonna play anyway. *IF ONLY* they had dropped the ‘Echo & The Bunnymen’ moniker completely, and rechristened themselves with a whole new and different name, I have no doubt that this lineup/era would have fared so much better, but what’s done is done… hindsight is 20/20 and all that jazz. All I know is that this stuff is light years better than most of everything that the current version of Echo has released in the last 20 or so years.

I must concede, it took me a very long time to give the Noel Burke era stuff a fair listen. I was definitely a huge Mac fan, and really one of those dyed in the wool ‘first four albums’ fans (I’m still not too keen on the self-titled ‘87 album). However in much more recent years I’ve been approaching this era with a fresh set of ears, and though most of it honestly doesn’t do much for me, I have to admit there are a few real shining gems in there, including this one. It’s certainly nowhere near as awful as the critics would have had us believe it was back in the early nineties. A bit dated perhaps, but that’s not always necessarily a bad thing. I’ll gladly take this over most of the current Echo’s post-Y2K offerings. It is true that Mac was basically irreplaceable at the time of his departure at the end of the eighties, and within that context I can understand why the Burke era was a critical and commercial failure… but had they just changed their name I think it would have fared *MUCH* better. Reverberation could have been a wonderful debut album had it been released under a different moniker. Oh well. What’s done is done.

Saw them together in Milwaukee for the Sound & Vision tour in 1990. Became a big Adrian afterwards. 😊

This is super interesting. Rhythm: AB's groove is so fluid, everyone else appears stiff and limited. Solo: from outtaspace. Not rock, not jazz, crazy shit, this is pure avantgarde playing in a poprock context.

I just watched an interview where Belew told how he was driving his car, an unknown poor musician, and heard this song on the radio. He said he loved it. Two years later he was playing it with Bowie. He’s had a charmed life and nobody seems to appreciate that more than him!

Oh man , Adrian Belew : one of the most original and inventive guitar players of all time . He takes every band to a higher level . No wonder Frank Zappa acted like a little child and was frustrated when Bowie asked Belew for his tour while Zappa just has ended his tour and didn't have performances in the time Bowie had his tour. So there wasn't a problem but never the less .......... It was the right decision of Belew while he knew Frank Zappa was against it. In the reactions of Zappa to Bowie Zappa acted like a narcist and Bowie stayed , as always a gentleman .
