Durand Line stir shows hearts still beat for Pashtun nationalism in Af-Pak borderlands

For over six months, peaceful protests have been underway at the Chaman crossing on the Afghan-Pakistan border, which has been closed except for travellers without a visa and passport. The protests have highlighted ethnic-Pashtun resentment against the Durand Line, the colonial-era boundary between the two countries-and tell us that secular nationalism is still alive in the region despite decades of jihadist assault.

International boundaries in the Subcontinent have artificially divided ethnic groups leading to conflicts and migrations: Pashtuns in Af-Pak; Punjabis in India -Pak; Bengalis in India - Bdesh; Nagas in India-Myanmar; Tamils in India -Srilanka, etc.

True. Because of the current notions of 'Bharat', 'Akhanda Bharat', 'Hindi', 'Hindu religion', 'subcontinent' etc are the creations of the 19th century after the British finished surveying and subduing the region. Boundaries were drawn only recently rather than reinforced over centuries with integrity.

Nice deep dive, Praveen. Wish you had touched on two things- you mentioned Sikhs in passing, but the NWFP owes its inclusion in British India due to conquest by the Sikhs of those areas early in the 19th century, and when the British annexed Punjab, they inherited control. The Durand line in KPK today roughly corresponds to the limit of inherited British control. That would partially addressed the question of where that line came from. As well, a word or two on the PTM movement today may have been helpful.

Why should this episode begin with views of Churchill? Since the last 75 years, a lot of interaction has occured between the people and the Governments of the region. I believe a lot of academic research too would have taken place on these subjects. Why don't they find any place in such episodes? Harking back to British for everything even after 75 years of Independence, reflects very poorly on our faith in our abilities to handle the issues of the region.
@mohsindalvi87

But harkening back to the Brits is valid. The anglo-afghan war aftermath screwed the pashtuns and the balochs (the 2nd ethnicity without a nation after the kurds, who also were screwed by europeans). Modern afghanistan created by the brits is an artificial state: northwest is uzbek dominated, northeast is tajik dominated, south is baloch, central is hazara (persian/dari speaking turkic shias) and remaining are pashtun. If balochistan & khyber pakhtunkhwa merge with afghanistan, the latter gains a sea coast, but what do to with pathans who are living in sindh and punjab. The presumed existential crisis in truncated pak's psyche may create security issues here also.

I am a Pushtun from KP and disagree with the analysis. Why was the demarcation made along the Durand Line. Were the British mad to do that. Kashmir too was ruled by the Afghans till 1824 if memory serves me right. The Afghan rule here was only effective to the Peshawar Valley and maybe the Kohat Region. Very large areas in KP were not governed by them. I can assure you that 95 % Pushtuns in KP do not want to join Afghanistan and are some of the most loyal Pakistanis. On this point I challenge anyone to conduct an honest survey. True various governments in Pakistan have mishandled things in the smaller provinces but that does not mean that one fine day the Pushtuns on this side of the Durand Line will rise up and ask to join the Afghan Pushtuns. Even within Afghanistan the ethnic divide between the north and South is great. Why talk of redrawing of boundaries selectively. There are graver faultlines elsewhere in our neighborhood.

His birth name waa Bhutta Singh Uppal. And... Two decades before the legendary Subhash Chandra Bose (wonder what he would have thought of what you guys did to the grandson of his friend Dr Mukhtar Ansari), Raja Mahendra Prathab formed the provisional Indian Govt in exile. He served as its first president. Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi was the home minister. Now.. double down on your purification drive and cleanse Indian histoty of its Islamic contamination. Afghanistan is called "the graveyard of Empires". It is a policy like - Afghanistan is for Afghans & anyone critical of this (against their way of life) are deemed enemies. Here Empire means an outside Empire. What is overlooked here, is the robust Afghan Nationalism. Americans were "used" to beat the hell out of the Russians, out of Afghanistan. Then Americans too were driven out. They began lastly to mete out the same treatment to lastly Pakistan, who nurtured a grand plan that Afghanistan is their "strategic" (anti-Indian) extension. In that endeavour, Afghans take Indian help & India unwittingly submitted, as that would be a stick to beat Pakistan with. All said, official Afghanistan doesn't recognise Pakistan. In fact that policy is implemented on ground, by virtually erasing Durand line (in line with non-recognition), on both sides of which the Pakhtoon cross as per convenience (there are more Pakhtoon in Pakistan than in Afghaistan). India is obliged to tread the ground, with caution!

Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi of Deoband that you referred to.... Was a staunch communist by 1920s. The past is very different from the contemporary right-wingers in India and Pakistan's imagination of it. Another influential Maulana from Ayodhya Utter Pradesh, Allama Niaz Fatehpuri, was the most influential muslim scholar who became an atheist in the 1920s. The past is lost and will never return. What is left is pygmies pretending to be leaders and a conservative middle class that is a victim of identity crisis in the digital world and seeks refuge in hate and otherization of anyone it sees as different. The educated middle class is the real curse in both countries. The poor, illiterate are much more peaceful. Hate thrives in the minds of urban bourgeoisie. Great pathan nationalism which is sweeping Afghanistan and kpk in Pakistan will not enrich pathans but lead to economic ruin , sequestration from Punjab and Sindh , and division of Afghanistan itself . Not a sane venture by any means as economic ouster of pathans from Punjab and Sindh will ruin economics of kpk and Afghanistan even . China is just studying Afghanistan and danger it poses to CPEC .
