This is the biggest difference between the real music from the 80’s/some 90’s and earlier. Musicians like Duran Duran had real talent in writing and playing music. Brilliant and a true force in music.

He grooves like no other! Have to admit always bought them Duran cassettes back in those days and the first I would sing out first are his bass lines! I kid you not! Hahaha

The most mind blowing aspect is that his playing seems so effortless yet produces so much groovy melodies instead of bland boring rhythms. This dude kicks major ass!

IMO The Power Station was one of the most brilliant projects in music. Such a collection of talent and chemistry is a rare find.

John, you have no idea how much I appreciate these mini-tutorials. The first song I ever learned on bass was "Save a Prayer", all the way back in 1985. So many amazing Duran Duran songs and phenomenal bass lines - "Last Chance on the Stairway" and "Rio" were two of my favorites. I learned everything off the Power Station album as well. That said, Notorious is still my overall favorite DD album - I learned every song off it and would play the album start to finish on bass regularly. Your playing and composition were, and are, inspiring to me 35 years later - any time I feel myself needing 'centered' on bass, I put on early Duran Duran and get back to my roots. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos!

I thought having Tony Thompson on drums is what gave The Power Station such an incredible drive and always loved that bass line. I have to say going to the Strange Behavior Duran Duran's concert in 87 at Wembley and seeing Steve Ferrone on drums had that same feel too! He was incredible as well. The intro to Vertigo where he plays the snare on the off beat... Such a small change but had a huge effect. Great drummers can really make or break a song specially combined with great bass lines. You have it with Roger and you had it with Tony and Steve. Cant; wait till you get to my personal favorite album of all time. Notorious!

I'm 52 years old, and The Power Station still one of my favorites groups that listen over and over and over. Including of course Duran Duran and Arcadia. Everything in that record was amazing and the videos. I'll never forget so good music!!!

Holy crap, this is amazing. The Power Station's self-titled is the first album I ever got, aged 10. I wasn't even a huge Duran Duran fan, but The Power Station? I wore that cassette out. What a great service to all us fans for John Taylor to talk us through this. He ought to be rightly proud of what he's accomplished, and that's only made more evident by watching this. If all my favourite bands did tutorials like this for their entire catalogues, I'd be sitting in front of KZfaq all day.

I was a hard core DD fan … the music, the obscure lyrics, the sexy guys and but John’s bass and handsome face always moved my soul. I just came across this video and guess what, nothing has changed. Saw the Serious Moonlight tour twice: Wembley Arena and the Milton Keynes Bowl. The Arena gig amused me because the "fashionably late" crowd who are always too posh to see the support band turned up to find that Bowie _was_ the support act and they'd missed his first set! Twats!

The moment I heard that Tony was forming a new band I knew it was going to be epic. The Power Station showcased John's talent. In Duran Duran he really didn't get much respect from most bass players but that all changed when The Power Station came out.

This song is music and production perfection. Tony’s drums are the gold standard of modern drumming, and Robert was one of those rare white singers with legitimate soul. Putting those ingredients on a track with a cat like yourself and magic was born

Expansive! John, you're really taking the time to explain these tunes. I remember when the Power Station hit. At the time I didn't know anything about Palmer and thought he was an old man! Hahaha. But I quickly understood that he was a serious vocalist with a rare quality of sophistication and intensity. As a bassist we think that the octave slap figure has to be exhausted by now, by then even. But this standout example turned everyone's head around. I love the production on the track. There are some seriously good sounds and panning. Is that a Factor bass? I remember going down to the music shop and playing them. I thought they were cool but perhaps limited if it was going to be your only bass as was the case with me as a kid. Still, Factors felt great and played evenly and sounded very good. I was playing a 80's playlist in the car yesterday with my thirteen year old son and some Duran Duran came on (Notorious! Bass line feels like being burned from splattering grease from a hot skillet). I didn't say a thing, I just watched my boy and waited. Sure enough after a few minutes he said "Dad, that's some good bass playing there". I smiled. I took some shit for liking Duran Duran when I was in high school but I thought it was incredibly well-constructed music and with a great use of space. To think that you all were so damn young. But there you go, you've either got it or you don't. With the right breaks and guidance a talented group of kids can go very far indeed. I'm sure you've got oodles of money and stories that would make Tom Jones blush but what I wish for as I see you all these years later is that you are satisfied with what you've created, that you are healthy, and happy. You certainly got me through a typical rough adolescence, helped teach me a lot about an effective, singing bass line and continue to interest me with these fine, down-to-earth tutorials. Be well.

Was never a Duran Duran fan, but KZfaq bubbled these videos on to my feed for some reason, and John's really winning me over- this is the third one I've watched (starting with Rio) and am really loving them!

My 12 yr old self would have done ANYthing to be able to talk to you or see "close" up videos like this of you... It's really cool how everything has changed and how the internet and social media has changed the world to bring the fans closer to the ppl they like.. My son.. appreciates what you are doing here too btw... He said not many artists take the time to really show everyone how you play what you play.... He taught himself the guitar and currently the bass.. So ty for that... Lastly... When I was around 10 I had a dream that you all came to my house to visit... What I realize through this bass session by John is that The Power Station album needs to be remixed so that John's bass playing is more front and center. The problem with the released mix is that on songs like Some Like It Hot the combination of the heavily effected drum sound and the horns bury everything else in the mix, namely the bass. Andy's guitar pierces through the mix quite nicely. It's John's stellar bass playing that needs a stronger spotlight. It would be really cool to get the entire Power Station album remixed from top to bottom including taking the effects off the drums so that they don't overpower so much. Get those drums off steroids and punch up the bass! Also, I wish John had spoken briefly about why he wasn't involved in the 2nd Power Station album LIVING IN FEAR in 1996 which brought back Robert Palmer both in the studio and onstage. With the passing of Bernard Edwards, Drummer Tony Thompson and Robert Palmer I'm sure John regrets not dropping everything else to be involved. While Bernard replaced John on bass for the sessions, it's really sad that John wasn't a part of it all.

Absolutely loved the Power Station. I played in a rock band in the 80’s but always liked a lot of Duran stuff so when John and Andy joined up with Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson I was made up to hear the edgier side of their playing. One of my favourite albums to this day 🎸

I can definitely hear Bonzo's influence on Tony's drumming. But, he was his own man and never gave the drums a break. Great video!
