WARNING - bass nerd comment 😂 Here’s something really interesting to note about John’s trademark ghost-notes: instead of plucking the same string twice with alternating index and middle fingers, he uses the next string up for the ghost note and plucks both with the index. That’s the real secret ingredient, it may not seem like a lot at first, but it does make a difference and to incorporate and perform it in such copious and rapid-fire amounts in a bassline is no easy feat!

I love these stories about the early DD songs. They freely admit they were in their infancy as seasoned musicians, yet produced so many timeless classics. John's bass was funky and had a great sense of timing right from the start. Nick would come up with some of those relatively simple yet massively catchy musical concepts and they build a masterpiece around it. They were such an awesome melting pot of influences and musical styles.

I’ve always thought of listening to Duran music was like being immersed in all these different sounds that mix together, but all have their own specific directions. I always listened to the bass lines; starting out listening to disco, then things like Blondie, then right the Duran, the bass always spoke to me. But just as easily, you could follow Nicks Keyboards, or Andy’s guitar, or Roger’s beats, or Simon’s lyrics, and listen to a different trip. Thank you so much for creating the music of my youth, that stays with me today- such a wonderful gift!

What a great chance to get "under the hood" and see what makes the song (and the rhythm section!) so special.

This is not just a tutorial series on playing bass guitar -- it is a fascinating tutorial on songwriting and improvisation leading to a unique, memorable musical number. JT doesn't do much how-to on the mechanics of bass playing; it is hard to analyze mechanics of something when you are a great natural at it. In the early days, John said stuff like, "Don't ask me what kind of strings I use; I could never do interviews with musician magazines!" Actually he did several, and they are excellent reads/watches, but they don't explain where his unique sound came from. I have seen recent tutorials online analyzing how to get that light, mellow, nimble, almost acoustic JT bass sound. Almost no other bass guitarist, at least in the pop genres I listen to, has had this sound. And John's natural facility just has me dropping my jaw and shaking my head rapidly -- " I'd only been playing bass for weeks at the time when I wrote the outline of this bass line!" (Paraphrase) And that, signore e signori, sums up what is otherworldly about Duran Duran, as they ALL had this level of clueless, incandescent talent. Okay, so this line's composing process is a basic theme and variations, mostly influenced by the great African-American R&B/disco bass guitarists. Listen to Beethoven and Bach for more information on theme and variations in music. Also listen to classic improvisational jazz. Listen to Ella Fitzgerald singing scat. Back to Beethoven, people would give him a little theme of the complexity of "Happy Birthday", and if he felt like it, he'd sit down at the piano and expound on it for an hour - in major, in minor, in different rhythm patterns, etc. (If he didn't feel like it, he'd tell you off. It was the risk you ran.) Ah, but I digress. Bravo, John!

He's worth however many millions of dollars he's made and so much more. ❤
