This video documents our ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in August of 2019. The railroad runs between Durango and Silverton Colorado for 45 miles and travels along the Animas River and through the San Juan National Forest. During the ride you'll be able to see some of Colorado's 14K mountain peaks. It's absolutely stunning and at many times breathtaking! It's such a beautiful area you can only see by railroad, or by hiking in. We really enjoyed our ride and look forward to taking the trip again some day. It's highly recommended you give this ride a try one day.
For more info on this train ride visit their website www.durangotra...

About 10 years ago I took the train one way (can't remember which direction). While passing along a stretch of river with calm water there were a huge amount of swimming in the water. All on cue they stood up, turned around, pulled their swimsuits down and mooned the train. There must have been 100 or more, guys & gals. It took a few moments for everyone on the train to realize what was happening. It was pretty funny.

I watched in real time. We made that trip in July 2007 with our grandson. Train both ways get to see almost everything by the round trip. From Rockwood to Silverton is the same view that the was available to the early trains in 1882 and onward. This line has never been shut down or abandoned since it was first built. Granted trains have not made the complete trip to Silverton at times for various reasons but not from suspension of service. I had gotten a book about the geology of the route from Durango to Silverton to follow as we made the trip which was very interesting. It is all upgrade from Durango except for a slight down grade from Rockwood to the truss bridge over the river on the High Line. Along the High Line on the wall side, the clearance between the car sides and the rocks is about one foot. The water stops are to refill the tender with water for the loco not to just put water into the boiler at those stops. I am not sure of the coal load, possibly 8 to 10 tons, but the water capacity of the tender is 5000 gallons. Water is put into the boiler by an injector every few minutes to replace the water that has been used as steam. A lot of water is used to make that trip.

Here I am, 6000 miles away in the UK, painting Railroad Scenes. I'm looking on the Internet for dramatic views, for future work, when I come across a photo of a train emerging from some mountains, somewhere in the world - doesn't give me any information on the photo. So I keep looking for similar scenes, then hunting them down, but no success until I hit Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroads. Is it a match? Not sure, so I' watched a video to check. Suddenly I'm in the company of two wonderful people who present me with a perfect video and confirm I'm in the correct location. What a great reward, I really enjoyed it, so professional and held my attention with just the right amount of commentary ...Thank you very much. (I liked and Subscribed). BTW my daughter married a guy from Colorado and he lives here. in UK..at sea-level ... on the coast of West Wales (Google Map Fishguard, Wales). I've started the painting!

My late wife and I used to love the Durango/Silverton area and vacationed there many times in the 1970;s, sometimes on the motorcycle, sometimes in the Porsche but with the long drive from California (Bay Area) our butts voted on the Porsche s time went on, then life got in the way and we stayed closer to home or took Curses but after all these years I still have a fondness for that area.

Thanks for sharing this adventure. That's a bummer that you missed the train back. My family road this train back in the early 1980's during our summer vacation in June. It was sunny when we left Durango, rained a bit along the way up, and there were snow flurries when we got to Silverton. I love the smell of these old coal-fired locomotives. I really enjoyed the trip and I highly recommend it.

Adam - You did it the right way, train up and bus back. The engine is working most of the way to Silverton so lots of smoke and noise, but is just coasting on the return trip back down. I recommend staying in Silverton a few days, ride the bus down in the morning and the train backup. Then rent a jeep in Silverton and go see God's country up close! Nothing like it. You won't believe the machinery that was hauled up into those hills to crush the ore, much of it by mules. Good luck!

The bright, clean panorama, with crisp mountain air in your face; what an invigorating train ride for you two, and me! In contrast, the bus ride down, with vistas seen through dirty glass, with sun haze and interior reflection, plus stale wind from its natural sources, is a bummer!

In 1985, I was planning a road trip around the American southwest. I got a book out of the library in Roxboro, Quebec which contained a section on the train trip. It sounded very interesting so I booked tickets through the mail - no internet then! We took the trip both ways at the end of September and my wife Lynn; a photographer, spent the entire trip up to Silverton in an open gondola car and it was chilly. Lynn shot two rolls of professional film which provided us with a lasting souvenir of the trip. At the time, we were told that the first prospectors expected to find a lot of gold. A message went out the the effect that; we're not finding much gold but there's silver by the ton. This allegedly accounted for the name of the town.

The Durango & Silerston, Cumbres & Toltec Railroad , The Royal Gorge Rail, all use to be part of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Amazing history when one stops and thinks about it. Adam & Abby: I'm not a machinist or welder but I might hold the indoor record for hours spent watching your videos. And I live in Durango. I'm not competent to talk "shop" with you but you've taught me a lot about two cardinal rules: (1) be patient; and (2) set-up is everything. So if you ever return to Durango, lodging, beers, and burritos are on me. I'll even drive to Silverton to bring you back down the hill if you miss the train again! Great video!

The locomotive at 26:47 is almost as unique and historic as the D&S itself. It was built for the US Gypsum Co. railroad at Plaster City, CA. in 1946 by the HK Porter Co. with a 600hp Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine. It is 75 tons on 6 axles with spoked wheels and tyres like steam locos. It was a A-1-A + A-1-A as built and powered centered axles added in the early 50s as when it was delivered to Flint, MI and the Huckleberry RR in 1980 it had all axles powered making it a C+C. No other 3 foot gauge locomotive like this was built by Porter.
@manga12
@manga12 4 жыл бұрын
ah hk porter built many many industrial scale locos, many have made it to preservation though not all, they have some unique one of a kind locos at the age of steam in sugercreek ohio, all around there its Mennonite and swiss amish all of it, people talk greatly of elkhart county and shipshawana having shops and amish but around sugercreek, walnutcreek, millersburg, and berlin ohio its three times the shops and since much of it is hilly like Kentucky in the fall when the colors are in bloom it is absolutely scenic, the hills look like they are on fire with all the red and yellow leaves on the trees on and over the hills, went last year in the fall toward the end of the season, missed my tour though, but hopping to go this year if I can garner enough interest for my dad to join me, as for trains I help out every other week or so on nkp 765 currently, not a tradesman but learning much about caring for steamers and rail cars. abom should totally visit there, as well as steamtown, the old spencer shops in nc, the Illinois railroad museum, the steam rr institute in owasso and henry ford musium roundhouse, those are some of the most famous places for trains and some of the best compleate steam shops in the nation , dont forget the toltec and combreas, and the east broadtop when it gets fully opened again, its a one of a kind narrowgage in the east and most complete almost like a time capsule but it needs lots of restoration work to the buildings to fully restore the shops and buildings, lucky some big names in railroad preservation stepped in to save it, one of the few good news stories about railroad preservation this year in a year filled with soo much bad news, sickness, unrest and destruction

First rode that train in 1965 when it was still part of the D&RGRR. Then the train went through Durango to Alamosa. One thing that has stuck in my mind over the years is the growing season in Silverton is about 2 weeks. If you kids ever get back out here again drop me a note and I will share my thoughts on fun things to do in the area.

I wish to comment on this train ride compared to the Cumbres & Toltec train (Antonito, CO/Chama, NM) trip. First, thanks for the video as it gave me a great overview of the D&S. I've done the C&T trip twice now. some years ago the entire route from Antonito returning via bus. Two years ago we went from Antonito to Osier Station (halfway) where they feed you and then return. This later began at 10am and returned at 4pm (?). What I like about the Antonito to Osier part is traverses two different flora zones. Begins in arid desert but soon enters the mountains, and there are some doozies. Comparing the two versions (Chama vs Antonito) of the C&T, it is my opinion the Antonito to Osier Station is the better. Unfortunately, Antonito, CO has less going for it when compared to Chama, NM regarding tourism, not counting the Indian Jones Home. I have two YT videos of our trip on the C&T railroad during my Santa Fe Trail Bicentennial Convoy of 2021 and previous Santa Fe Trail Convoy, Day 3. Note the C&T engine now runs on oil, not coal. I did not note if there was any food/drinks available on this D&S train. Apparently, it does. The C&T railroad had food & drink available.

Would you recommend the extra time on the Silverton train or does the Cascade Canyon up and back offer more than enough? Consider if we are staying in the mountains above Durango so we can drive up the road and visit Silverton anyway. It looks like you got to move side to side to take videos = I think on the Cascade Canyon the right side is the best but on the Silverton, IF you only got to sit on one side which would be the best for views and videos? Tx - we will book online off of your recommendations for a visit this August.

Adam and Abby: Thanks for the video, I found it very interesting and it helped me decide to finally take this trip. I was wondering if sometime, perhaps the next time you're doing a camp video, perhaps Adam can talk about his thoughts on the bariatric surgery. Its been some time and the results are showing, but as someone thinking about having it done, I'd like to know about some of the stuff we can't see. Like I learned you can no longer take NSAID's, or having to change eating habits, especially portions. I learned you can only drink small amounts of liquid at a time. If so, how is this affecting you? If you had to make the choice again, would you? I need conformation that if I do this, even though I'll lose weight, that I won't be miserable. I know it's private, but If you could discuss some of this with us, It would help me and probably others. Thanks!

I could be wrong, but the engine doesnt look coal fired - if so it would put out thick clouds of dense black smoke - these days most steam excursion trains are fitted with fuel oil burners, easier to keep fired, less maintenance and keeps the EPA whiners happy. Either way this is a beautiful ride, awesome scenery and the sound of that steam engine working and its whistle from a bygone era, great stuff.
@MPT_Productions

It is coal fired. Dense black smoke is a result of either over firing, meaning putting too much coal in, or whenever they clean out the boiler from soot.

If you guys ever get to Europe make sure you ride the Bernina Express from Davos (in Switzerland) to Tirano (in Italy where you have a relaxed lunch before getting the express back to Davos) .kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orqcidt5m7exhYk.html. And the Settle to Carlisle railway in the UK.

Cabin.. If you ever do get a cabin in a canyon, make sure it is back from, and above, the water. Otherwise the cabin goes downstream when it floods.

Great video! I love that area. We spend 2 weeks there each summer and drive the Jeep trails. The train ride is a must do because that is the only way to see some of the area besides hiking for miles. We stay in Ouray because I am not brave enough to drive the motorhome on the highway into Silverton but we are in Silverton about every day doing something. We usually park at the train station at the end of the day and we watch the trains pull out while we air the Jeep tires back up to highway pressure. The summers are great but you have to like snow to be there in the winter. There is a KZfaqr there, Old Timer 2009, and he just posted a video showing his front yard. You can just barely see the top of his 4.5 foot fence sticking out of the snow. Check his channel out. How about those Chiefs!
