The Denver and Rio Grande, use to be one big circle of narrow gauge railroads which supported the mines and mills in the south western part of Colorado. Over the years, the rail traffic moved to trucks, but the railroad was still fully operational until 1968, when the D&RGW was finally given permission to abandon. One small branch line from Durango to Silverton, was very profitable for tourism and stayed operational through this abandonment period. Another section of track from Chama New Mexico to Alamosa Colorado, was too costly to remove. They decided to walk away and do nothing. In 1970, the states of Colorado and New Mexico came together to turn that section of the San Juan extension back into a railroad. Now called the Cumbers and Toltec Scenic Railroad, this over 60 mile line, takes guests from the little town of Chama New Mexico all the way to Antonito Colorado.
These two remaining lines are featured in this film.
As part of a series of new films about the narrow gauge, Giants of the Hills looks at what remains of both railroads.
The film is produced by Tyler Purcell in conjunction with Narrow Gauge films.
Shot entirely on Kodak Vision 3 film stocks on Super 16mm.

We rode this train back in the late 70s from Durango to Silverton and back. It was a marvelous time.

Rode it 10 yrs back. Amazing trip standing at the back of the very last (open) car, in the autumn just after the first snow of the season.

Fond memories of a trip from Durango to Silvereton, when the line was still operated by the D&RGW RR in 1974. Today I live within earshot of a narrow gauge line operated by steam with 12 daily trains - year around!

Narrow guage. These giants are almost balancing on 36”!!! No wonder they’re rocking! Beautiful job sir!! For the people who say the tracks need work. Get a group and I’m sure they’ll let you come down and volunteer. They could always use a few more gandy dancers.

Wonderful job. The softer look of 16mm super 35 film still holds up. I thought 16mm film and DVX tapes would be the standard for video production, but I was wrong.

Yea, 35mm looks too close to digital. Plus when you're running and gunning, it can get very expensive. So we settled on 16mm and the majority of the shows we've done (check out our other videos) are on 16mm. We have one more show that's being finished right now, which is part of a trilogy about the 476. The next one is about running the train in the snow and the conversion from Coal to Oil. The one after that, which we're shooting in October, will be more about the freight business of the Rio Grande and how the K28's dominated that on the Silverton Branch. So don't forget to subscribe to catch more videos coming soon! Primarily shot on film.

EXCELLENT camera work! There is a "feel" of film that just does not fully translate with video. Fitting for this subject for sure!

Derp 🤦‍♂️ You've really committed to old style film making, and you've done an amazing job! I don't often do this, but I watched this video on my TV, and was all the better for it. I really look forward to seeing more of this, and dare I say it - longer videos 😄 Congratulations on an outstanding piece of video production 👏

I know that the perspective is exaggerated by the long focal lengths but some of those tracks need attention.

@@tyestrains Why does it look so good? Usually when I see 16mm footage it looks bad, very grainy low resolution and the colors are very badly reproduced.

@@teresashinkansen9402 Well, we do this professionally and use modern equipment. That really helps us create a nice looking image. Our other film “476 to Silverton” is a far better representation of what we can do, it looks a lot better.
