"Jeremiah" (1511) from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564)
*Francesco Durante (31 March 1684 -- 30 September 1755) was an Italian composer.
He was born at Frattamaggiore, in the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, and at an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesù Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant'Onofrio. He is also supposed to have studied under Bernardo Pasquini and Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni in Rome, but there is no documentary evidence. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant' Onofrio, and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto, also in Naples. This post he held for thirteen years, till his death in Naples. He was married three times.
His fame as a teacher was considerable, and Niccolò Jommelli, Giovanni Paisiello, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Niccolò Piccinni and Leonardo Vinci were amongst his pupils. As a teacher, he insisted on the unreasoning observance of rules, differing thus from Scarlatti, who treated all his pupils as individuals. A complete collection of Durante's works, consisting almost exclusively of sacred music, was presented by Selvaggi, a Neapolitan art collector, to the Paris library. A catalogue may be found in Fétis's Biographie universelle. The imperial library of Vienna also preserves a valuable collection of Durante's manuscripts. Two requiems, several masses (one of which, a most original work, is the Pastoral Mass for four voices) and the Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah are amongst his most important settings.

Francesco Durante (François Durante) Compositeur italien de musique baroque, Né le 31 mars 1684 à Frattamaggiore , Décédé le 30 septembre 1755 à Naples. Biographie Né dans une famille de musiciens, il se rendit à Naples en 1699, à la mort de son père, pour poursuivre ses études musicales auprès de son oncle Angelo2, directeur du conservatoire de Sant'Onofrio. À Naples en 1705, il fit jouer sa première œuvre connue, un « scherzo drammatico » aujourd'hui perdu. Durant quelques mois, entre 1710 et 1711, il enseigna au conservatoire de Sant'Onofrio, avant de prendre le chemin de Rome où il séjourna probablement en 1718. Nommé en 1728 maître de musique auConservatoire dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo à Naples, il eut Giovanni Battista Pergolesi parmi ses élèves. Il démissionna de ce poste en 1739, sans qu'on en connaisse les raisons, puis en 1742, il succéda à Nicola Porpora au conservatoire Conservatoire de Santa Maria di Loreto. le plus ancien et le plus grand conservatoire napolitain dont il sut relever le niveau. À partir de 1745, et jusqu'à sa mort, il cumula cette charge avec celle de « primo maestro » de Sant'Onofrio, où il avait été rappelé. Parmi ses élèves, outre Pergolèse, il faut citer notamment Niccolò Vito Piccinni , Tommaso Traetta Giovanni Paisiell,, Antonio Sacchini , Niccolò Jommelli, Egidio Romualdo Dun , Pasquale Anfossi, Pietro Guglielmi et Domingo Terradellas. Durante, qui toucha tous les genres de musique, laisse une œuvre extrêmement abondante. Il est regardé au xixe siècle comme le chef de l'école musicale moderne. Il mourut en 1755, d'une indigestion de melons, dit-on[réf. nécessaire]. Son œuvre est immense et 62 volumes manuscrits sont conservés à la Bibliothèque nationale de France2.
