Just in case this video was not clear enough, IF YOU HAVE A HYBRID generator, you don't need the snorkel kit. You just a new Natural Gas Regulator that connects to the same/existing Propane port on your carburetor. Your choke placement will differ from altitude, settings, and machine. Link in description for kits that you can buy cheaper. Also, shortly after this video, I did paint my gas meter pipes with RUST-OLEUM professional high performance enamel spray paint to prevent rust. Now if you have a "gasoline/petrol only" generator, the additional port method or snorkel kit would work best for you.

Yep, I just got a hybrid generator, designed for gasoline and propane. I just used the conversion kit for my barbecue, which converts the barbecue from propane to natural gas. Just pop the line off my barbecue and popped it on to you the generator. You are correct, you have to adjust air flow with the choke, but it runs great.

Hey Chris, great video with a ton of information! I was wondering if you ever measured the pressure in your gas line? I’m asking because I have a set up that is almost identical but can’t get the engine past a few revolutions before sputtering out. I’m using a similar regulator but am thinking of switching to the exact model you have to minimize variables. The specs listed for that have a pressure inlet between 9 and 13.5 inches of water column. The pressure in my line is roughy 7.5 to 8” w.c. which is pretty standard for residential gas lines into a home. I’ve also read that the gap on the spark plug should be decreased for natural gas because it’s a “dry fuel” and can be a little more difficult to ignite. I was wondering if you made any other changes that weren’t mentioned in the video. Thanks Chris!

Yes, but it's strongly frown upon. You have to make what they call "suicide cord" which is like a dryer male to male plug. You also have to make sure you turn off main switch at panel.
@PeterLawton

@@Mr-Chris ... and make sure all family members know what not to do while that suicide code is in use. The simplest demand is, "don't touch it", but in the case of you being away and your spouse needing to get power back on, you could give more details (don't ever touch the metal prongs of the plug -- they are the equivalent of live wires).

You can, but run the risk of back powering utility power back to your generator should your utility resume if the main is not separated. Too much humor error is in play without proper electrical interlocks.

I took what information he provided, did a check with an HVAC mechanic friend. Following that, I bought mostly the items he provided the links to & converted my XP12000EH that I had already purchased from Home Depot last year. After everything was finished the trial run worked perfectly. Now I don't need to worry about buying gas or propane in canisters, it's now running off the natural gas that runs in my house. Thanks for the video. I could not have done my conversion without seeing what you did. I have a DuroStar ep12000 dual fuel. It came with a different regulator than your DuroMax (made by the same company). I put a 3/8” quick connect nipple on the regulator inlet. I put a 3/8” socket on the propane hose w/ regulator that came w/ the generator. I bought a 1/2” I’d 24’ hose with 1/2” nipple on one end that connects to the 1/2” socket on my natural gas line & a 3/8” socket on the other end that connects to the regulator. This allows me to connect either the NG or the LPG hose to the regulator. I can change from NG to LPG to gasoline in a few seconds. Runs great. Truly tri-fuel.

Instead of disconnecting the propane setup. Just put a quick connect on a 90° brass fitting to angle the quick connect toward the outside of the generator. Buy the natural gas convertion with snorkel kit with natural gas regulator and extra long rubber hose. Put a 3/4"quick connect on the natural gas regulater. You don't have to take parts off to have a dedicated propane or a deadicated natural gas generator. Have it to where you can plug into either one that you need to run at that time and have a true tri-fuel generator. All you did is keep your generator a dual fuel generator.

Is there a flow controller to adjust because it stops as soon as I stop depressing the spring behind the regulator. Before the conversion this Generator ran fine on propane. Hey Chris, great video. You CAN use your 50 amp outlet if you install a 50 amp breaker in your house service panel with an Interlock switch and a 50 amp inlet plug outside. I did it for about $300. including a 30ft., 50 amp cord. Sell the generlink to pay for the short list of supplies.

Trust me, I've looked into installing a interlock, but my breaker box it's not a good candidate for it. I have a "split bus panel" breaker box which means I do not have a main shut off. My breaker box has a series of shut offs not one main shut off. So it will always back feed into the grid. In order to install a interlock, I will need to upgrade my entire breaker box. I live in a DC Metro area and electricians price gouge like crazy for this service. That's how I ended up with the generlink.

I did my testing with a xp12000eh on natural gas. I got the same regulator and hose as you have. My gas meter is in the front yard, my generator is in the back yard. From the meter, I have a 1inch corrugated run of about 15 feet to a 3/4” manifold. From there I have one 3/4” outlet and five 1/2” outlets. I originally had a 1/2” run of about 12 feet to the bilco door in the back yard. I stepped the 1/2 up to 3/4 and connected the quick disconnect and 3/4 line to the generator. I was able to pull about 5500-6000 watts just fine. I then replaced the 1/2 to 3/4 all the way and added an exterior Stainless Steel Burnaby “gas plug” cover panel and had no improvement from the step up. Overall I am very happy. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video. I'm a bit late here, of course, but I have the same kit and am in the process of converting a welder/generator for trifuel. I am not a plumber but its seems you already have (had?) what you need to tie into a 3/4" pipe for natural gas supply. Perhaps a plumber could verify this, but it seems that you can swap the 3/4" Tee coming off the right side of your meter with the nearby 3/4" Elbow off to the right (leaving the short pipe section attached to the elbow). Then you'd have the 'free' open end of the Tee to attach to your generator feed line with the benefit of eliminating a lot of extra pipe connections - plus look a lot cleaner.

I watched people wait in line for gasoline in excess of one hour every day. I did not have to bother with that. Once I started a generator running on natural gas, I was done. if you have just minimal electrical and plumbing experience, you should be able to convert your portable generator to natural gas. If you feel you do not have the knowledge just like he mentioned in the video get professional help all I can say is once you converted to natural gas you’re done the lines for gasoline and propane like I mentioned earlier was at least an hour. Running my Sportsman GENTRI9K tri-fuel (rated at 9000w surge/7200w run), I'm probably only getting about 5000w running power, and of course, that won't run the 4-ton central AC.

You can try closing your choke and trying different positions to see if that helps. Honostly I think you should remove the snorkel and connect the new regulator directly to the carburetor like I did in the video. If you want to switch back to propane you can do so by using the new regulator with a propane adapter fitting. Essentially you don't need the old "stock" regulator since the new one works with both natural gas and propane. I think the snorkel is the problem not letting enough natural gas into carb to work since it already has another port connected to it . The snorkel is only meant for generators that are gasoline only.

A natural gas regulator does not stop the flow of gas it reduces the three or four pounds at your house to inches. (One pound of gas pressure is 28 inches of water column) they are adjustable with a screw in the middle of the diaphragm using a manometer at the ports. "Most home and commercial generators are designed to work with a standard gas pressure of 0.18-0.25 psi, or 5-7 inches of water column (wc). The recommended nominal operating pressure for natural gas is 3.5-7 wc, with 6 wc being ideal. " I believe a dual fuel generator will have a solenoid shut off valve for the gasoline and the propane in order to make them safe to use. I did find a couple of the conversion kits that have the fuel cut off solenoid built into them.

So I'm thinking that if you mounted a 3 way valve or a tee with 2 separate valves, you could keep the ability to run propane as well. Propane through the existing regulator, or run Natural gas through the regulator you mounted.
@Mr-Chris

You could do that, but the new regulator also works propane too, you only need a adapter fitting from 3/4 to 1/2 or 3/8 propane line. Depends on how intercit you want to be with the this setup, but your idea would also work.

Do I need to mount this to the generator or can I just mount it to the gas line on the house and then use the same or similar hose and add a quick connect to the hose between the propane regulator and the carburetor. Since I would only use natural gas at home is seems like a much easier mod and I would not need that crazy big hose running all the way to the generator.

Theoretically seems like it might work. Keeping regulator attached to the main gas hose and having a disconnect for the smaller one to the carburetor. My only advice would be to make sure the smaller hose isn't too long. Also I think the regulator might need to be upright, but I am not sure. Give it a try and let me know if it worked.

During my initial research and reviewing how to hook up a generator to Natural Gas, it was suggested due to the size of my generator, it was I should have a 3/4 inch hose. However I'm not an expert and it could possibly run just as good on a 3/8 inch hose. Being a novice at this, I just bought the one that was recommended by the supposed professionals.

I removed it... but you don't have to do it. I have no intention of ever using Propane, but you can just leave it un-piped and reconnect it when you want propane later. The gas hose and diameter of the line line is specifically dependent on the HP of the engine you are using, how far the line is away from the meter and how many gas appliances you plan on using with the generator, also, is the line direct from the meter, or are there other appliances on the line. If the hook-up hose is kept to 6' or less, the use of a 1/2" hook-up hose and quick disconnect coupler for up to 18hp engines is acceptable. The point is to have the correct size pipe up to the shut off valve for the generator.

Hello Chris sorry to hit you up with questions, 1. Do you really need a 3/4 inch hose as it is you are reducing the size on the meter from 3/4 to 1/2? I read that you do need a lot of BTU for this generator to handle the load at 9500 watts. Have you push this to the limit? 2. the amazon link for the conversion kit, for that price they do not include the load block, they said on the Duro max XP1200 you do not need it? Have you found that to be true? if your load block pretty much wide open with full choke ? 3. did you run the generator with gas prior running it with Natural Gas for the first time? I read you must run the generator at least 2 hours on Gas prior running it on Natural Gas? let me know what you think. Thank you.
@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 3 жыл бұрын
#1. This is debatable, "professionals" say that for a 18HP engine like this... meter fitting can be 1/2, however they recommend 3/4 meter fittings. The "pros" also say the hose needs to be 3/4. However some users say 1/2 hose and meter works well, while others say it doesn't. # 2. That's right, You don't need a load block for this kind of generator as the carburetor already setup to run Propane and it can run natural gas so long that the regular is adjusted to the correct pressure. I think the load block is only needed for Gasoline only generators. #3. I owned the generator for several months before converting it natural gas. I think I put about 10 hours of use on it and changed the oil before the conversion.

@@Mr-Chris Good morning Chris, thank you so much to the clarification, I am planning on doing this set up, but the Gas Line was ran from the meter at 3/4 but reduced just before the end, So I will let you know if it works. So the old regulator is not connected to anything correct? You just have the new regulator connected to the carb directly with nothing extra no snorkel kit just the hose if I’m understanding correctly…and what fitting could I use to be able to run propane too if I used my generator in a portable setting say on a job site.
@Mr-Chris
@Mr-Chris 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the old regulator is removed. No snorkel either, just remove the old propane hose and connected the a new hose to the new regulator. To get propane to work with new regulator, you need a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter fitting, you should be able to hook up propane to the same regulator using such an adapter. However you might have to adjust the inlet valve which is easy to do.

Cool, I've wondered how difficult it is to convert a propane gen to nat gas. BTW. I use a 75' long 3/4" garden hose for my nat gas line on my 10kw tri-fuel gen. I don't even change the fittings on the hose. At the meter I have a 3/4 npt to 3/4 garden hose fitting. Then at the gen I have a 3' adapter hose, 3/8 flare to 3/4 garden hose I made using the hose from a cheapy propane regulator. Where the garden hose changes to the 3' adapter hose I have inserted a plastic $2 garden hose ball valve, which allows me to turn off nat gas at generator. In all I love it. It sets up fast and is inexpensive. Harbor freight has the hose 3/4 100' for $30 or Home depot has a 75' thats black with a yellow stripe hose for $45 I prefer.

Hey Chris, I’ve got a question for you buddy. I’ve got the same setup, almost. I’ve got the 13000E- gas only. I installed the US Carb kit using the snorkel and it ran fine 44 hours during hurricane season. Problem was, it did not want to start easily and I was having to get while using the prime button to get it going , but after starting it ran fine. It would either backfire or take like two or three minutes to start. You inspired me to order the 13000EH carburetor from the factory with the propane intake port, like yours has. I sealed the carb and now it won’t start or run. US Carb and Century think the port may be too small or my NG hose fittings are to small, etc. I’ve used full flow large port fittings on everything and it ran fine. The propane port is much larger than the snorkel holes for sure. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks man.

I am not sure if this will make a difference, but I remember reading how the Carb needs to run on Gasoline for a few hours before converting to NG. Have you tried running the new carb on Gasoline only? Does this Generator have an auto choke? If so, you might want to check to see if you can override the auto choke when you start it.

@@Mr-Chris I was thinking of adding gasoline. The conversion kit requires to run it prior to conversion to seat valves , harden cylinders, etc. I did that and hated that gas was in the bowl over winter so was happy to be replacing it with a dry carb lol. I will add gas to confirm it is the NG system. The choke doesn’t seem to start automatically, looks like it would turn off automatically once started. The two carbs look identical except for the additional propane port on the new one.
