Dusky Track

7 ай бұрынThe Dusky Track is my new benchmark of epic hiking trails. Only 84km long, it took me 7 days with the side trip to Supper Cove on the Dusky Sound. Located deep in New Zealand's Fiordland this trail was a thoroughly rewarding challenge. Only accessible by boat or sea plane, it is remote. The scenery is breathtaking but you really have to work hard for it. The track is characterised as New Zealand's hardest tramping track. Extremely wet, incredibly muddy and steep terrain, with several sections requiring chains to lower yourself down or haul your ass up a mountain make this an incredible hike.

Did the Dusky-track in march 1988. From west arm lake Manapouri to Dusky-sound; from Dusky-sound to lake Hauroko; from lake Hauroko back to west arm. In total 12 days (including 2 hutdays) on the trail. Hard, wet, muddy, in parts steep but rewarding hike, wish I could do stuff like this ! Thanks for uploading, brings back great memories !

Back in 1988 you could not imagine that 36 years later there would be something like internet and youtube, and you could relive this hike in a comfortable chair ! @@mickbeckers

great video. This and Stewart Is Circuits are my top 2 favs. I was on the dusky 12 days, and had 2 or 3 catching Hapuka off the rock at Supper cove..... unbelievable track - thank you! 💞💞

You go back to the last most likely place you could lose it. In this case I see a steep bank just behind you. It will be there 80% of the time. Sometimes you have to get creative. A mate lost his raybans blown off his face at the top of a small mountain. It was the viewing platform in a howling gale. I stood where he stood and held a branchlet about the weight of my own specs and let it go. I watched where it landed down the mountain. I climbed down to where the twig went, looked around and there was the sunnies.

Fantastic video. Thanks so much for creating and sharing it Mick. I haven't walked the Dusky Track, but I gather it's both beautiful and brutal - which really came through in this. I guess the AAWT was a good warm-up 🙂. Glad you got the aspect setting sorted for this one, it thoroughly deserved it.

Thanks heaps. Converted to trail runners about 15years ago and have never looked back. This pair got shredded on the AAWT before even stepping foot on the Dusky. Bit of a test to see how far I could push a pair. Got about 700km a pair on Te Araroa. Couldn’t think of anything worse than hauling wet leather boots over the Dusky.

Nice video. You have some really nice bright stills. I wonder - what month of the year did you do this trip? If you said in the video, I missed it.

Awesome video! I’m all booked in to do it solo as well. Would you say it felt extra dangerous being out there alone? Is it a particularly dangerous track to go solo?

Keep an eye on conditions and carry a PLB and you will be fine solo. The only dangerous part solo may be if any of the walk wires have been washed out and rivers are super high. If that is the case you may want to have someone to cross with. Other than that, watch your footing and go slow. Couple of tricky sections but nothing you won’t be able to manage solo. Cheers. Mick

@@mickbeckers thank you! Did you carry your own sleeping pad or just rely on the mattresses they provide? Are they decent mattresses?

@@handy77 I had all my gear from the AAWT with me when flying straight across from AUS to NZ, including tent and mat. I should have left these in Te Anau and relied on the hut mattresses. Both tent and mat stayed in the bottom of my pack for the whole Dusky. Hut mattresses were all fine.
