Our visit to Bathurst was nothing short of extraordinary. As we embarked on our journey, we unexpectedly stumbled upon Hayes Siding, adding a touch of nostalgia to our adventure. Continuing our drive, we were astounded to encounter the colossal world's largest pineapple, standing proudly as a symbol of creativity and wonder. Its three-level structure and observation deck left us in awe, offering breathtaking views. Amidst our exploration, we were captivated by the presence of what we said are the world's smallest pineapples, a delightful surprise. As we took a slow drive through the historic streets of Bathurst, the rich tapestry of its past resonated deeply. The ornate churches and the wonderful powder magazine exemplified the town's architectural charm and storied heritage. Our visit would not have been complete without seeing the Toposcope, an emblem of the region's remarkable history. Although we were unable to gain access to Bradshaw's Mill, our time in Bathurst left an indelible mark, brimming with captivating sights and a palpable sense of historical significance. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #bathurst #1820settlers

Bronze plaques were stolen last year and replaced. Across from the Anglican Church, was the the cottage of the priest. You missed it. 😊 Bathurst roads are bad when it rains, but you'll always find someone to come pull you out.

But there's so much more that we didn't miss. Always keep in mind that we've never been to most of the towns before, so we explore our way through and are just too grateful to see what we see. Whatever we 'miss', is totally fine with us. 🚙😁 The roads were totally cool, that section where the mud was churned up, was a no-brainer for me and we had to turn around.

@Nanelle van Tonder Bathurst is a beautiful place from beginning to end. 🚙🤩 You may not have gotten to that point in our video, but we did mention that we spoke to a lady who has been a resident in town for 21 years and she told us that the Memorial Hall burnt down a year ago. Judging by the plant growth, we would've thought it happened much longer ago. So sad. 🏛️😥

Hi you two! Thank you for taking me on this expedition into pineapple country, with no less than two railroad stations discovered! Thanks also Sonia for unpacking the 200 year history from the Pig and Whistle up to the Giant Pineapple. Bathurst seems to be one big museum/monument. The old Anglican Church was a highlight. Not only the monuments but also those old white houses on the green streets add to appreciation of the history. I find it hard to express the feeling this video leaves me with. I'll therefor steal your "an indelible mark, brimming with captivating sights and a palpable sense of historical significance". I can't wait for the next trip! Keep safe!

That was very interesting. Some of my ancestors were 1820 Settlers, so it's interesting to see where they were settled. (There's a story that's come down about that little Methodist Church, where one Sunday they had to wait inside after the service, because a herd of elephant were moving through the churchyard when they came out after church.) (I suppose the bush would not have been quite so thick back in the days because of the elephant in the area.) Something that surprised me in 2020 is how little was made of the bicentennial. I'm unaware of any celebration events commemorating it at the time. I think most people have lost interest in history or something.

@@gavincame9560 I'm sorry to hear that. At least Bathurst had some celebration plans for the bicentennial, where it looks like very few other people did (or even considered that 1820 and 2020 are connected in some way). (Unfortunately a lot of 1820 Settler families have now become 2020 Settlers somewhere else. I think that's why there wasn't much online interest in the event.) I suppose the next best thing is to pick some "post-Bicentennial" date in the future and try again, then? A "220 Year Bicentenial" in 2040, maybe? If people started talking about it now, it might manage to turn into something, then.

Bathurst Town Hall Fire This is the information that we have gathered so far During the early hours of this morning, at approximately 4:00am, the burglar alarm was activated and Multi Security responded. A fire was observed in one of the back rooms. The Fire Department attended the scene and dampening down of the building commenced. Reports received confirm that the internal offices and the inside of the Hall set alight quickly due to the high volume of wood in the building. Due to the force of the fire, it was not possible to stop the blaze. The Fire Department and SAPS were still on scene later this morning. By Gerrie Germishuizen|February 11th, 2022|News|0 Comments

I have been to Bathurst just once. My first husband comes from Eastern Cape and wanted to trace the steps of his ancestors. Bathurst I remember as the pineapple capital. What a magnificent old building the centenary hall must have been. The building style is art deco, so I think it must have been 1930's? Of hoe? I think you are probably right in saying there was first an older building and then this one. So amazing to hear the history of St Johns church. Gebou om te hou, ne! What a beautiful old building. Pardon me for saying this, but what has happened to our faith? Only from the point of view as a Christian.I will delete if necessary. Well the powder magazine is certainly knee friendly! Oh that road! The churned up mud really looks scary, so glad you guys decided to go back. Sonia, you are very brave! The mill sounds amazing, what a pity you couldnt see it. At least you managed to track🤣😂down the station amid the bundu. Something very spooky about those desolated train tracks.....would love to come down in the middle of the night at full moon....who knows what might be seen! Bathurst is a place living in many dimensions and overlays of time.

We've come to the conclusion that that incredible Memorial Hall must've been rebuilt in 1920 or thereabouts, but really don't know for sure! 🤷🏻‍♂️🏛️ The Anglican Church is seriously next-level, not having been altered even slightly in almost 200 years! 😍💒 We're just not able to make any arrangements in advance, so missed out on the mill. I have heard that the centenary hall was rebuilt back then by farmers in the area .don't know what happened to the original building.. When we first moved to Bathurst many years ago..the first place we stayed was in a little flat above the workshop, across the road from the old train tracks and maybe round about where the station used to be..the first thing I felt going up the steps to the front door was a presents of an oldish man in overalls on the landing. I didn't mention it at first as I didn't want to freak my kids out . After a couple of days there..my daughter came to me and said she could see a man outside her bedroom window (which was on the landing I'd also felt his presence) she said he was waving.. I told her I also could see him and he was waving towards the road, we didn't know the railway tracks were there at the time..after doing some research on the building, and talking to some old folk who had lived here forever..it turned out it was an old motor workshop. The man who built it stayed upstairs. He was friends with the train driver..he would stand up there and wave to his friend as the train came by.. so interesting .. we never felt afraid of his presence..a friendly old chap. 🚂🛤️

She's had three major surgeries and all of them failed unfortunately, so she finds constantly getting in and out of a vehicle, climbing stairs and walking on uneven surfaces challenging. We travel in remote and rural areas often, so she prefers remaining in the vehicle. However, she does get out wherever she feels comfortable enough to do so! 🥰

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. Thankfully we're OK, but there are many folks who have suffered major losses and damage and have even been displaced from their homes due to the flooding, which is not something we're used to in South Africa. Our thoughts remain with them. 😥 We were just as amazed at seeing the pineapple fields, they were awesome! 🍍😍 No worries, you enjoy the sun while it lasts. The videos will always be there, ready when you are! Thanks for stopping by, we appreciate that! 🚙😁

Sonia and I got back from this Eastern Cape trip a few weeks ago and we visited quite a few more places. You'll just have to keep on watching to see where all we went! 🚙🤩

I had an uncle who grew pineapples in Port Alfred, strange thing is that they only bear fruit once :)

Nope, we're not fussed about anything we 'miss' in a place. It's simply impossible to visit every single place of interest in the time we have available to travel.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@DustBugsTravel my word! We were there, when you made the video lol. If you scroll to 14 min and 50 sec, the white car, standing in front of the guesthouse, that's our car haha and where you stopped by Pig and Whistle, the Mercedes coming around the corner, was my sister, on her way to us... lol

That is incredible and what a coincidence! 😁 At least we featured your and your sister's vehicles in our video! 🚙🚙 I'm sure you had an awesome stay in this magical town! Thank you so much for letting us know! 👌🏻

We travel for our own enjoyment and choose to share our travels with those who might also enjoy them. If you don't enjoy them, all good with us. 🚙😁 Most devices have a pause button, so you could easily pause at each one you choose to read in detail. You chose not to mention all the things, other than roads, we show in detail and not just 'scan over'. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It remains entirely your choice to watch.
