Don't worry about wind noise, it adds to the atmosphere, so do the birds' twittering. I love this! Thanks for showing RSA.

Budgeting isn't really our strong suit, so we're not able to give you much advice. We rent the smallest, most reasonably-priced and most economical vehicle to keep our fuel costs to a minimum and we book accommodation at no more than R750 per night, since those places are usually more than sufficient for the two of us. Our vehicle, fuel and accommodation are our biggest expenses, so we try and manage those at least. Happy travels! 🚙😁

I visited the Castle in 1988 and remember the tour guide saying that lady Barnard, I think her name was Elizabeth, swam in the swimming pool on a daily basis. You mentioned a pool. In one of the solitary confinement cells you can also see the bath they used for the prisoners. Apparently they all bathed in the same, shallow, about 30 cm of water. You can see the low, brick wall of the bath. It's just a rectangular shape built by bricks.

Very interesting story about Trappieskop and the prisoners who built the "trappies"! It's a great idea to get prisoners to do something constructive like that!

What a blessing, there seem to be no tv. Congratulations to the people of Orania. God bless you. You could be an example to us, the disappearing German nation.

The church is one of those hideous modern Dutch Reformed Churches which totally ruins the wonderful old town. This design for DRC happened all over South Africa during the 1960’s and 70’s. My uncle was an architect of this design. So un churchy or a place that people would want to worship in. Thank heavens this awful style has gone out of fashion, and maybe the solid stone style with gables and a bell tower will come back. Welcome back little churches with beauty and humility, especially in small towns. This is an eyesore.

I really like this forgotten town! I’m always interested in the fact that somehow the townspeople managed to plant exotic trees to give them shade, not knowing anything about the indigenous flora, but the exotics grew! and gave lovely shade to these amazing little dorpies, which are so very precious to our history. These exotics will not be replaced, but indigenous trees from the area will one day replace them, which makes sense. But these trees are still so beautiful.

I can understand your excitement as you neared KP. We used to have that each year we travelled to it once the bug had bit. We used to leave Durban at 4 a.m. driving via Zululand, Swaziland and in at Crocodile Bridge. My friends had the same feelings you guys have about KP. They couldn't even sleep, would leave late at night and drive through the night and arrive at Malelane in the early hours of the next morning and camp outside the gate waiting for it to open. Glad you arrived safely. That was one heck of a long drive.
