【Semi Onsen Kishiro】
Semi Onsen is a quiet hot spring resort along the Oguni River in Yamagata Prefecture's Mogami County.
The spring water of Semi Onsen is clear, colorless, tasteless, odorless, and refreshing.
"Kishirou" is an old therapeutic bathhouse founded around 1860, and its stately appearance catches the eye even from the national highway on the other side of the river. The main building was constructed in 1872, and is said to be the oldest building in Yamagata Prefecture. The inn has not been renovated for tourists and feels naturally old without a sense of staging.
The building is very spacious and resembles a huge labyrinth. When we visited, the proprietress was running the inn by herself. The situation of "a proprietress who is the sole guardian of a large old ryokan" was like something out of a movie.
There are eight bathhouses with unique baths such as "Roman style bath for a thousand people," "Dutch bath," and "Fukashiyu. After warming up in the baths and strolling around the retro building, you will feel as if you were a part of the long history of Kishiro.
When we visited, it was just snowing heavily and the roof was being cleared of snow.
