Hi Jovie, I am a professional hairstylist working in London (but working towards moving to Den Haag or Rotterdam). The difference between the States and many countries in Europe is the "Manufacturer and Application Standard", concept that includes health of the hair shaft. In the States, the FDA approves the use (and more frequent use) of higher peroxides, therefore stylist will try to get you in asap even if it is not so good for the health of the hair. In Europe, we have to follow manufacturer instructions that ultimately are based on EU rules&regulation. This doesn't allow the use of very harsh chemicals so your hair feels so much better but still super blonde. For me I always recommend to have a set of highlights every 10 to 12 week (never sooner) so that the regrowth is such that there is no overlapping. Having said that, even in Europe there are many hairdressers that will have as main aim the "income" so they will try to get you in as much as they can even if that means ruining the condition. As far as the blow-drying goes, northern countries in Europe are less focused on finish as they rather work on precision cutting or precision colouring therefore they have "less training on it". In Italy where I originally come from, blow-dries are a huge thing and there is way more training in school than cutting or colouring. Hope this helps xxx

A professional comment! I wanted to say the same thing. I think a good hairdresser is one who cuts your hair in a way that is “ready to go”. It must be directly ok after washing without further styling. And I think in the Netherlands we prefer a natural look. You don’t want to look if you just came from the hair salon. And isn’t there also a risk of getting cancer with aggressive hair colors? I vaguely remember that it was a thing years ago.

In Europe people are not obsessed with straight hair. I mean if your hair is naturally bone straight that is definitely embraced. But if not you just wear your hair the way it grows. I live in Rome and lived a while in Paris. Many Italians and French women have Afro type hair and they don't straighten it. Europeans are more natural not being obsessed with bone straight hair or overdone hair. The beauty standard here is about embracing ones natural beauty. People put themselves together in a way that is stylish but not trying too hard. It's a chic, effortless look that is not "vulgari" or vulgar. Americans tend to overdo the make up, hair, nails and jewelry. Less is more here.

I've been here for over 30 years now and was nearly tackled for my Levi jeans when I first got off the plane🤣 The one thing I noticed about Dutch clothing styles is that everyone seems to dress very casually and wear a lot of black. When interviewing men of all ages, asking which women they find the sexiest, they ALWAYS said the Dutch women were by far the most beautiful because they were natural. They can throw their hair up into a ponytail, jump on their bikes and arrive at their destinations soaking wet and still look hot. Men don't like all that make-up and fakery. We American women do it only for other women. Puttin' on the Ritz .. puttin' on airs. I much prefer the no nonsense attitude of the Dutch people myself, but then again, I'm one of those old lady types who always voice their opinion without being asked.😁

I LIVE IN BULGARIA NOW - It has been raining all day. It stopped and I walked my dog - 4 girls about 16 - 18 were paying twister in the park, there was like 1/2 of water on the ground still. Hi Jovie, I was sure you were also going to mention the difference in the colour of teeth. American women all seem to have very white teeth, and here that's not the case. It's so easy to understand: the US drive cars, the NL ride bikes. Quite useless to blow dry your hair into shape today, when tomorrow it is all blow to smithereens by wind and rain tomorrow. So, the Dutch prefer an all weather cut and treatment. More cost effective... ;)

What you see in the Netherlands is that Dutch women so spent time to their appearance too. The difference is that in the Netherlands we prefer a natural look, make-up is applied in such a way that it does highlight the features you want to highlight without being in your face, it is more subtle. Fake nails I find ugly in most cases, as you can tell they are not natural, so I prefer women with natural nails like you have now. Just an opinion from a Dutch guy not using any of these products 😎

It must be so expensive to be beautiful in the US!!! What I like of being a bit older is that I can do what I want. It is an unwritten law here, that the older a woman gets, the shorter her hair should be. In corona times I have decided that I will no longer do that. I want longer hair because I want to do different things with it and I can use my old hair clips again. I also bought some new ones. Also I have decided that I like comfortable losely fitted dresses better than jeans. I bought several nice dresses and I can combine them in many ways with cardigans and ankle boots, necklaces, things for your ears. A lot of it I bought in the eighties and nineties or this century, some new. It is super comfortable. So even when I work in the garden I look cool! At least that is what I think ;) No make up! I never did that except occasionally some rouge or nail polish.

I like this difference in perspective. A couple years ago, in Canada I think, I saw a blow dry salon and I remember thinking (as a Dutch person) "why would anyone pay for something you can just as easily do by yourself, at home?". I still don't see the point to be honest, but I guess if you're used to it, that's quite a shock. I personally experienced my biggest culture shock in NZ when I found out that I needed to pay extra to get my hair washed at the hair dresser's. I was so used to this just being part of the deal, that that made no sense to me :')

Hiya, I'm a London based 45 y.o Spaniard. I believe the beauty standards you're describing are not only Dutch but apply to European women in general. I've never blow dried my hair in my life or dye it, I always go to the hair dresser for a "great cut" when my hair is too long (which happens every 5 months). If your hair is healthy looking, naturally shiny and trimmed properly (and with good style) there's no need for a pricey blow dry because it already looks good. Capitalism has sneaky ways to dry us women out from our hard earned and blow dries, fake nails and botox are just some of them. Don't fall in the trap.

I’m brazilian and there the beauty standards are even more absurd. I’m happy people are not so obsessed with beauty here. Dutch women care a lot about their skin and also like to be in touch with nature. The Netherlands used to be protestant and very sober. Vanity is frowned upon. My girlfriend goes every 1st Saturday to the beauty salon with her BFF where they get their hair & nails done, get a few facials and they got like a mini sauna for your face. Fiona has natural half-long (a little bit long than yours in this vid) black, so she doesn't need touch ups, but it is cut perfectly every month. They make a day of it and it boost their self esteem. You know what the sad part is? I never see any difference what so ever, but maybe that is because I'm a (dumb) man.. My only savior is that when she uses the creditcard at the salon I get a notice on my banking app and when she got home, I can say "Hey, you got your hair done. It looks great.." and suddenly I'm this attentive guy. I love technology ;-) Beauty magazines still adhere to the old American 'Barbie' beauty standards, but I think the fashion industry has noticed how big (no pun intended) the obesity market is, so they kind of embraced it..

And €30 just for blowdrying most think far to expensive.

Canadian with American family: fake nails are nasty germ-carriering devices. It baffles me in time of Covid, women are still wearing them. Due to medication, I have alopecia areata and have had to define my own beauty standards. Visiting the U.S., I am struck too by the excessive plastic surgery I am seeing. Where I live in Canada, I still see the Blonde barbie doll look but in the U.S. - it is even more prevalent. My own family that lives in the U.S. joked that they consider huge plastic boobs and fake lips "normal" because they are so prevalent. It is refreshing to hear and read these comments as the ubiquitousness of these fake characterists are troubling to me. Thank you.

I don't 'do' my hair apart from combing it and braiding it at night to prevent tangling. I also never dyed it. I don't wear make-up at all. I hate dresses and skirts, mostly wear jeans. Prodent smiles! I think the blowdrying is just because all that heat on your hair is bad for it. I only blowdry my hair when I have to go somewhere fancy and I run out of time. Always air dry it and to be honest. I like it better that way. To dutch, American beauty standards are over the top and it all boils down to you are beautiiful the way you are and also practicality. Long nails look pretty but not practical. Blowdried hair looks pretty, messy bun => practical. High heels yes! but sneakers way more comortable. It's the mindset of most dutch ladies.

So, there was this ritual from my mother. Saturdays around 15:00/16:00 hours the nail polish was put on the edge of the heater. Not in the middle but on a corner, so the polish would not get tot warm. Polish flows beter when its a bit worm. Nails clipping and filing, push back the cuticles and ready to polish. Ready for Sunday, ready for church service. Seaming meaningless, But full of devotion and skills. There is no shop who can deliver the same result.

My hairstylist does a perfect blowdry, I always feel so special when I leave the salon. It is amazing but yes most Dutch salons just do a regular blow dry. I agree with you about the blow dry in Holland. Its done so badly in The Netherlands. The beauty approach is changing now but still the Dutch appreciate natural beauty. Maybe a small touch up. But actually as a Dutch woman i like a little bit a more sparkling but with a natural approach. More french or spainish or italian.

I always find your nails to be só nicely ‘done’ that it’s quite funny to realise that by your (former?) standards it is actually less ‘done’! At my haidresser’s they usually just dry my hair after cutting it, which basically means a quick blow dry until about 75% dry. Or I can opt for a proper blow dry (which costs extra). Sometimes I choose the blow dry if I have something special planned for that evening, but it actually makes me super selfconcious when I have to maybe pop into the supermarket on my way back, because my hair looks so big and fake 😄 Also, by the time I get home, it’s mostly back to its more natural state anyway. Guess I should come prepared on those days and go to the hairdresser by car instead of on my bicycle! By the way, ny haidresser said they have people coming in regularly for only a blow dry, every week or so. But mostly elderly ladies...

When we first lived in Europe in the mid-1980s, the way women used scarves to accent their outfits was novel -- but now it's become fairly common here in the US as well. I also remember how frequently I'd see women walking around in at least 2" spiky heels for everything from visits to the theater to visits to the supermarket (and how often I saw women accidentally stepping out of their shoes when the heel got caught in something), with only the youngest eschewing them for flats or sneakers -- while here in the US it was a rare woman indeed who did not go into work wearing her "tennies" and carrying her heels in a bag for office-only use. Being a guy, I also remember the look of the Dutch women (and the Flemish in Belgium where I lived) quite fondly... :-) Even when using makeup, the preferred look was natural as opposed to plastering on color with a trowel.

One should always treat ones nails as one would ones hair, they are the same thing, Keratin and are both actually dead so it's preserving them with the correct treatment and not to harm them. As for fillers and Botox, the long term health implications are just becoming known and it does not look good so it is a good idea to avoid them. Natural beauty always wins for me. Half of facial beauty is facial expressions which express personality eg. intelligence, empathy and other positive mental qualities, not just the shape of facial components eg. nose, mouth, cheek. If someone has their face shaped to look exactly like Scarlett Johansson's face they won't be as attractive as her if their personality falls short of Scarlett's personality.

Thank you for this beautiful video! I agree, it is so important to embrace unique, natural beauty from the inside out. Focusing on self-acceptance. Having said that, I don't like prejudice to anyone. I myself am Dutch but I find that many Dutch people harshly judge Americans and look at them as shallow people. I do not agree. Just because a person has a perfect blow dry and fake nails or even plastic surgery, does not mean that their heart isn't deep and pure. Or that they don't care about what truly matters such as helping others. For example, I love Dolly Parton, her wisdom and kindness are priceless, even though she does not look natural in her style choices. So what. I don't see the point of judgment. It gets everyone nowhere. It divides. I feel sorry about the harsh judgment from some Dutch people on American people. Also, not everything we see on TV coming from Hollywood is what everyone values or looks like, especially those who struggle with money. People are people. Leave each other be. Finally, culture and cultural expectations, shape a lot how we behave. It does not mean, that had we been born in a different country, we would not have behaved differently ourselves. We are social animals. Peace. I think in America there is a lot of expectation, especially on girls, to be smily and to express a lot of appreciation through cheerfulness and big, happy sounds. In the Netherlands it is more the norm to behave in more laid back ways and not show off and keep it cool, to avoid looking 'too much' or appearing arrogant. Both expectations are restrictive on people's natural self-expression and confidence, in different ways. Let us not judge each other but allow each other to be everything our hearts want. I went to visit San Fransisco once and found it liberating to be able to talk to absolutely anyone on the street with ease and without awkwardness. I also didn't feel the fear there of sharing openly with each other about talents, dreams or aspirations. Nobody gets told their dreams are stupid. As a creative soul, that's liberating. Another thing I am not a fan of about Dutch culture is bluntness about negative things or negative opinions. It is possible to be totally honest yet tactful. I think being free in one's own expression but at the same time truly empowering of others, and only giving personal opinions if actually asked by others, is a better balance. That, and being kind. :) Thank you for the video ♥️ It's awesome. Doei!!!

The reason a blow dry is important after a haircut is that a good stylist will then go back and do any touch up necessary. Hair "hangs" differently when dry, especially bangs. A good hairdresser knows this. Thanks for the tip, Jovie. When I get my first hair cut there, I'll be sure to ask in advance if they style after.

In the hair salons I go to, I get asked: wil je je haar alleen wat droog geblazen hebben, of in model geföhnd? Two methods that differ in price and with the last method they take their time and make your hair look like a million bucks. With the first, it’ll be just a quick blow dry without it being shaped/modelled. I hope you get what I wrote. If I have a party to go to or something, I opt for the ‘in model geföhnd’ option.

❤🔬👌🤣 Insightful and fun! When I think about it the Dutch, German, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish ladies go for the middle ground, are obsessed not to damage their hair with excessive treatments, use composite nails on special occasions, prefer subtler cosmetic surgery and may purposefully NOT fix "imperfections" in order to look more "natural". And yes, they demand their necklaces to be comfortable, well crafted of 16-20 carat gold. Heavy, clumsy chains with a lot of 20+ carat gold? Never.

The blowdrying when you get your hair cut is a free extra(sometimes I go out with wet hair if it’s raining), so they do it if they have time which they don’t really have. but if you pay for the blowdrying, like I guess a blowout? And your not happy with it you need to go to another store. Besides your hair will be damp or wet by the time you’re home, so why need blow drying?

I used to know a musical couple here in Amsterdam. The woman was born in Germany, and used to be a singer there. Country music, often performing for American soldiers. 1) She was so insecure about her pronunciation of the lyrics (in English), that she'd change the sound mixer settings for her channel to obscure that pronunciation. 2) The first time I met her, it was at a party of mutual friends. It was dinner time when they arrived. The man sat down opposite me, the woman dropped a medium size handbag on the chair next to mine, kept another sizeable bag on her shoulder, made her way to the ladies' room, and stayed there for three quarters of an hour making herself up. 3) The man was as down to earth a Dutchman as I, so we soon agreed that she wouln't need all the fuss for either of us. I also suggested a fitting birthday present for her (and later told her): a shopping trolley (bag on two wheels) as a beauty case. He appreciated the idea, she didn't.
