🎥 Did you ever wonder what some of our hand gestures mean? Maybe you have an idea, but it might be that some hand gestures mean something completely different than you thought! In this video, I will teach you 20 frequently used hand gestures in Dutch. I am not talking about Dutch sign language, but more about hand gestures and body language when you talk.

In Colombia: 1) you kiss your fingertips when closing all the fingers together; 2) you touch your head with the index, the same Dutch gesture; and 3) thumbs up.

In Poland we use the “Prima” gesture and we kiss the index finger and the thumb, and as they move away from our mouth we open the circle We have the expression: “Palce lizać!” (“To lick your fingers” - But instead of licking we kiss them and open the hand) We use a similar gesture for “You are smart” but it’s rare, we rather comment it with words. The last one: for “good luck” you hold your thumb in a closed fist - it means “Trzymam kciuki” (“I hold my thumbs for you”). Dutch gesture for “tasty” is quite similar to “You are crazy” We move our hand like there is a lightbulb in our ear - so rotating with our fingers a little bit apart. The “You are crazy” gesture (index finger tapping on your forehead) is the same, but depending on the context it may also mean “You’re dumb!” I learn a lot from your vids. I have Dutch friends and they’ll be quite surprised to know that I’ve learned some Dutch already. Thanks :)

I’m from Italy, and here, the hand gesture for “mhh lekker” is used to say “If I catch you.. (I’m gonna make you suffer ahaha)” 😂😂 To say “mhh lekker” with the Italian gestures you have to put the index on your cheek (with the rest of the hand closed) and you have to rotate it back and forth using the tip of your finger as a pin, not so easy to explain with words😂

Thanks for the great video, Kim! Also for the very easy to get pronounciation for me as a learner, this helps a lot! In german, crossed fingers is literally „pressing thumbs“. You make fist and keep the thimbs inside and press them. At least where I am coming from.

Unsurprisingly, it's very similar in Germany (at least the area where I am from). For keeping the fingers crossed we literally "press our thumb" (Daumen drücken), so we literally put our thumb inside of the hand and "press it" with the other fingers of that hand. It's interesting how gestures vary from country to country!

I am from the USA and it's surprising how many signals we have similar. The one that made me smile is the fingers crossed. We use it for telling a lie behind the back or for good luck if you hold it in the front so that's interesting. Also I smiled because the way you wish luck is pretty similar to the "itsy bitsy spider" song we sing as kids only we hold our all our fingers and cross the index and thumb to make the spider look like it's climbing. The other finger are legs.

I have just found your channel and I really like your content. Your teaching is very practical and easy to understand for someone who is learning Dutch like me. Thank you for your educative VDO. I feel a little bit sad that I can't find someone who makes a great channel like you to teach Flemish because I am learning Dutch in Belgium. I would love to suggest if you can also create the content as well for learning Flemish I believe you will make a great learning channel for people who are learning Dutch either in NL or BE. Thank you again.

I'm very happy to hear that, thank you! Unfortunately I cannot teach about Flemish, I mean, the grammar is all the same, but they use a lot of different words or they use them differently. And since I am not a "native" Flemish speaker, I cannot teach about that. But if you learn the grammar here on my channel, you are well on your way! And maybe then watch Flemish television. I can recommend you the series "Undercover" :)

So interesting! In Israel, most of the gestures are common with yours, except: 2:40 can either mean "it's tasty" or "i'm full" 5:30 means I'm crossing my fingers for good luck 6:30/6:40 (tapping on the head WITHOUT twisting the finger) means also being smart, HOWEVER 8:44 (putting the hand to your head WITH the twisting of the finger) you're telling someone that he is crazy or stupid.

I think rubbing your belly, in Dutch, means you've had a lovely dinner, unless you pull a painful face, then it means you have cramps. People that tap/hit their stomach with an open hand (palm down) do that when they're full (but usually it's done by quite fat older men, it's not a very polite gesture.) I'd associate being pregnant with holding both hands 'underneath' the belly, on the front, as if you're holding it up underneath your bellybutton.

How many errors did I make in that sentence? As a norwegian, I find a lot of your words similar to ours. In Brazil do not use the gesture shown at 4:50 . Normally is made the other way around: the circle of the thumb and index at the front and the three fingers at the back. But to avoid misunderstandings better forget about it. It's very offensive. The meaning : "go f*** from behind"

🤟 = I love you.

That 'prima' hand sign.. Here were im living, the government already banned selling of turtle eggs, and it is illegal buy and eat turtle eggs. Sadly there are still some demands on this 'exotic food', illegal seller will hold up that hand signal to tell they are selling turtle eggs.

American culture: north east region: Good luck is gestured with a deep smiling head nod, a concurrent wink, and a 👍 or 🤞🏼. Tasty (lekker) is gestured with “Italian roses” near the mouth 🤌or🤌🤌 that blossom 🫴🏼. Crazy is gestured with a single finger swirling near your ear or temple, or by crossing your eyes. Which sounds very rude written out and maybe needs to be deconstructed.

Someone who is smart is: eyebrows up/impressed nod, with a single finger tapped twice to the noggin. Same finger can me redirected to point at the direct subject of intelligence or brilliance if it’s communicated in complete silence.
