Great job again! This may be splitting hairs (pun intended - my Skrama sure did split hairs out of the box), but the designer describes the Skrama as a "heavy duty bush knife". Sure, it's primarily a chopper and that's what the long handle is for - but you can choke up on that handle nicely and the first 5 centimetres of the blade feature a 25 degree grind for finer work. It's really designed as a one-tool-option sort of knife and was inspired by the medieval scramasax. Isn't a machete rather longer and thinner and used for underbrush, sugarcane and other stuff that you won't find in a northern forest...?

I have a skrama and it does pretty good with bushcraft tasks. I don't know if you noticed or not but it has a secondary edge a couple inches long at the handle. That's the last of it I use for finer tasks and it does pretty good. I haven't carved a spoon with it and don't intend to lol. I usually carry my own spoon or some chopsticks. The Skrama is hands down my favorite large knife. And I do classify it as a knife instead of a machete. Machetes tend to be much thinner and lighter. But, there are all sorts of machetes so I guess it's just semantics. The Skrama does suprisingly well with finer work with the dual grind. It will never compete with a Kansbol or other dedicated bushcraft knife in that area but it's quite capable. Anyway, fun comparison!

Agreed. I own all of the above. Personally I tend to pair the skrama with the 110. The extra length of the 140 does not give anything already covered imo.
@FrankSchweppe
@FrankSchweppe 6 жыл бұрын
They are if weight is not important. Skrama plus the 110, or even just a Mora. If you want to travel light(er) on hike, the 140 can be a very effective one-tool option (assuming that you already have a good folder on you, or a multitool). Just don't try to chop down whole forests with it. ;-)

Love the videos guys. Some of the best, most entertaining, and legit knife reviews on KZfaq. Seriously, it’s amazing how many knife review videos are just people talking and showing the knife and never cut anything with it. However, I think it’s odd that you are so adamant that the Skrama is a chopping machete and not a knife. It’s the size of a Bowie, or competition chopper, and no one calls thise a machete. To me a machete is a much thinner, more flexible, significantly longer bladed tool, intended to be a “slicer” for cutting vegetation like vines, canes, reeds, grasses, etc. I think the Skrama is absolutely a big knife, and a hell of a well designed one at that. My Skrama is without hesitation my idea “one tool” option. I took mine out in a rain storm yesterday, and harvested firewood, made rain fly stakes, carved a spear, made a wooden “grappling hook” processed my firewood, processed my fat wood, made feathersticks (shavings), made fatwood lint (spine scrapings), scraped my ferrorod, and made a fire with it. The two different grinds on the blade make a phenomenal chopper on the distal part of the blade, the wharncliff tip allows for detailed carving holding the blade by the spine choked up towards the tip, the grip has two or three different positions for detail, light chopping, and power chopping, the rubber coating is great in all weather conditions including rain and mud, and the sharper second grind on the proximal part of the blade is as sharp and fine as any pukko, allowing for very detailed work like notching and feather sticking. Including slicing fat wood like a kitchen knife dices cucumbers. It is one hell of a compact powerhouse, that does the work of a hatchet and pukko, I never go camping without it.

Thanks for the long-awaited review. The Terava Skrama is made from 80CrV2 Steel which is tough (I have made knives from it). I would like to see a second review where you demonstrate making feather sticks with the secondary grind near the handle, I have found that it does well with this. It is a knife, albeit ugly, not a machete it was designed to carry out most bushcraft tasks, and it does in my experience of using one for a couple of years. I am not a fan of big knives, but this is the one I would carry.

Also now available is the Skrama 200. With the same edge profile as the 240 but a bit shorter and less massive, with a sigle-grip position handle. Not a better carving knife, but less capable as a chopper in an even cheaper, shorter design.

@@ajaxtelamonian5134 Look up Taiter Hukari. It's a modern version what a hukari used to be: a broken sword, taken from battlefield and then used in farming/forests. Varusteleka used to sell those Hukari's made by Taiter, until Taiter changed the design for worse and Varusteleka then designed their own product: skrama, short of skramasaksi which in english is Seax...

First comment I ever write on a DBK-video, even though I've seen and enjoyed quite a few. I've also made a couple of videos myself, and some of them focus on chopping (both with knives and axes, and sometimes knives vs. axes). I saw in a comment below where PREPAREDMIND101 mentioned my channel, and the success of the JX5 (in my first chopping contest). I really like the JX5 for its great versatility; being a great chopper for its size and weight as well as being a good all around camp knife etc. Out of all the knives I've used and own, and speaking solely of pure chopping performance, the best ones I've used are the Grasso Bolo III, Parang and Battle Cleaver - all made by Bark River. But they are all large and heavy and not quite as versatile as the JX5; especially the 2nd Gen. JX5. The JX5 is my go-to chopper, should I feel the need to have one with me when out hiking/camping. I do prefer using axes and hatches though, like the Outdoor Axe from Gränsfors Bruk. But variation can be fun at times. ;) Keep it up!

@@addgohi2 I agree that the new ones have a very pronounced part and it's very easy to see the different grind angle. The older ones it's not so obvious but they do make the claim and it's mentioned by big youtube channels that were send the first Skrama's for testing. In fact they basically all mention it. That's why I think it was there from the beginning as part of the design of the blade but now made more pronounced so people can actually see that part of the blade being different. That's why I think DBK may have gotten one that was not properly ground to standards.

@@addgohi2 Oldest videos I see online are some 4 years old but most are more recent. The DBK video is more recent. So I think it's not likely they had the first production run version but maybe just had a bad example or they just missed that second grind on that first part

The skrama is an amazing knife but in reality the focus really lies in chopping with the skrama where the fallkniven is more allround. Also the steel on the fallkniven is better. However not so much better that it justifies the extra costs. Nontheless we love both and we can recommend both. Knives and tools also doesn’t sell the modern bowie. Come on... I love Fallknifen knifes, I have an A1 for 25 years, maybe even more. But If I want to carry a survival knife that is able to chop like a beast, I grab my Cold Steel Trailmaster. In the best version, San Mai sandwich steel, it is less than half the price of the Fallknifen Bowie. I have this beast of a knife more than 30 years now. It had to take several ungodly beatings, never has let me down. The Carbon V steel is not that bad. I just clean it after I have used it and cover it in silicone spray. Edge retention is fine, as Cold Steel knows how to heat threat steel. I have the feeling you are two steel snobs, tho I love the channel.

some negative comments over there... But I liked the video, your vids is more about fun other than a full review with all specs and features. If i want specs i'll go to other channel or just google it, so i recommend to all of u who say that thia video is not informative. Many of their vids are not informative, they don't even use a macro. But this channel has something special, some charming that other boring channel don't have. I always go after your vids with a good mood guys, thank you bastards for that.) P. S. dat badass cowboy spit made my day!

I've just read all the replies. I am a No:1 Skrama fan, but for all its greatness its has some limitations. DBK has made a fun vid, as they do. They are right the Skrama is more stiff machete than knife. For its weight, fine grind, and ingenious handle design its an incredible versatile tool. Its a great bush golok, not a breeze block breaker. Its why I carry one. I find most objectors generally in conflict with it as they have something they prefer to push. Some people have another style of blade preference, but that shouldn't take away from the fact the Skrama is really good at what it does: thinking man's golok. More specialised tools might beat it in their particular department, and yes it can be complimented with either a small knife and or axe; plus saw. There are a few cheaper bolos weight forward designs that might give it a run for its money, but for all round utility I don't think they really better it. The steel and handle, handle design and material, all just too good. I think the DBK are fine with it. Plenty of other vids of people who love it too, and showed what it can and can't do. DBK love bushcraft designs, I'm not so keen. And I'm fine with that they have a sponsor. Every way you look at the Skrama, its superb and a bargain. Beat a log then its not going to prove much. I've yet to find a distractor that proves anything, just a certain desperation to find fault (often by putting it against some hefty, overly expensive, piece of over hyped iron slab; and I'm not talking about the Falk). I'm not impressed with quite a few YTube knife reviewers, as they preach a good bit of baloney. At least the DBK boys don't fall into that trap. Those in the real world have taken to the Skrama well, and it now has a great following; rightly so. Won't be for everyone, but most people its plenty great. If someone finds a hawk, or axe better, or just their favourite old faithful knife then thats fine too. What can't be taken away is the Skrama is original and works; anything else is how it fits into the cutting armoury. I wouldn't not have one now, and a good few others agree.

Scrapyard Dogfather in SR77 is an amazing chopper once you convex the grind slightly. Survive! knives GSO 8 in CPM 3V is indestructable and chops like a dream. It's all down to personal preference and what people can afford though.

Best choppers I’ve had from Busse/Sykco/Swamp Rat were the Busse Aftershock Bolo, Busse Bushwhacker Mistress, Swamp Rat MountainMandu and the Sykco 1311. Hands down the best out of all of them by a long shot was the 1311 with a 25* per side convex edge.

I think the skrama shines in it’s price range and the handle is very warm for colder climates like finland where it’s made. But id love a big chopper in cpm3v still haha

Yowzers. Great vid yet again with good humour . I agree with you lads, good chopper and steel for the price. I find the Skarma nicely balanced too, with a comfy 2 position handle to do close up push cuts I find the longer handle counteracts the blade length giving a lighter controllable neutral feeling as well as being able to deliver big chops when hand sat towards rear of grip . Seems like 80CrV2 is a better carbon steel 1095 Cro-Van with a better edge retention as long as heat treatment is done correctly which the Skarma seems to have nailed. Good stuff. Can't wait to see what you guys are planning for next Thursday. Take care lads all the best.

Thanks a lot and 80CRV2 is definitely a great steel and the best thing is that its very inexpensive. I too like it a lot more than 1095 or 1095 crovan

The JX5 is a great chopper, but it’s definitely not the best from Bark River. I’ve had a bunch of large blades and the one that’s always come out on top is the Bark River Parang. If y’all can find one DBK I would highly HIGHLY recommend getting it. The next one that was really close was the Bark River Bravo 3, but the handle on it is a little small for my taste (Bravo 2 handle, although good not meant for a 25oz 12” blade) and would transmit shock more often than the Parang chopping very hard wood like Texas Live Oak. I’ve done side by side testing with my JX5/Parang/Bravo 3 and the easiest way to put it is that regardless of the wood you’re chopping the Parang would do it with 25%+ less chops. Search EBay and the BRK Facebook group DBK and I am positive you’ll be able to buy a used one from someone for a good deal.
@762mmtexan9
@762mmtexan9 6 жыл бұрын
That said the JX5 is a overall more useful knife when it comes to other tasks because of the more balanced blade and how you can choke up on it. I’d definitely recommend a JX5 as well, chopping aside it’s a apples to oranges to the Parang.
